I think you have an absolutely magnificent school here with an equally magnificent staff, from my travels to other schools around here, there' s no doubt about that. The students and teachers, my foster family, and all who have given me my golden opportunity here are to me, a very special brand of people. I have certainly learned a lot at Arrowhead academ- ically, but most of all from you Arrowheadians. Thanks so much for the encouraging smiles, the ready ears and the helping hands. Thanks for helping me find me. I sincerely hope you have benefited from me as much as I have from you. I hope I have given enough of myself. I end now with just these words: Though years may pass on and we may change, know at least, you have made a good friend in Malaysia. Charles Chow It has been a real pleasure to be here this year even when there's been troubles and conflicts. There's no complaints about them just a feeling of rebirth and al- so of thirst because what I'Ve experienced can only open the doors for more questions, more things to be experienced. I hope my year here will have shown that the tolerance of other people's point of View and way of living is the only way to establish the universal peace and under- standing that are AFS's dream and should be everybody's reality. Patrick I-Ierzig It is too hard to express my feelings about my AFS year in the United States in just a few lines because I have learned too much and I have done too much that it would need a whole book to write about. When I say I learned a lot I don't mean that I learned chemistry or physics falthough I really did learn a lot about those tooj but I learned more about life and also another important thing, "that people are all the same around the World" and the differences are so small that they are not even Worth mentioning. One of my first realizations about Americans was that they were all very nice to me even the ones that didn't know me. This was something that I didn't expect. This was true for all the people, in school or out of school, and especially of my American family. I am going to try to find some words to show how grate- ful I am and I will choose these words: THANKS A LOT EVERYBODY! Where a desert, told, dry and lifeless beneath the sun reaches far beyond the waters of these, the rivers wide. A patch of green, where birds sing the melody even to the night. Where the grass grows tall, yet soft to those who feel it. A place where fire is still unknown. Where humans love all things that live. Lions strong do love the sheep. Where fruits grow so fresh the air smells of them. 180 Flowers red, and blue and yellow reach tall and show the power of the sun. Where Springs bring water as pure as the light that shows beyond the clouds. A place where the living die in peace with a love from those Who still breathe the air made pure by the trees that reach taller than the horizon, the horizon where secrets lie. II Being men they yearn to have knowledge of these secrets. Hidden beyond a desert where many die in vain searching. A paradox it seems. defended by this desert that keeps them pure of what might destroy them. Yet imprisoned by the same desert, from what might save them or aid them in their growth it Binds them to one another to strengthen and hold a love. Yet separates them from another people that could make them more complete. A patch of green an island layed down within a sea of sand Where people live without the answer. III There is a man between these rivers that learned of the answer Beaten and old, blinded by the sun that told him that answer. The sun that knows all places and all things, the sun that shows the light to those beyond the desert as well as those within. Upon its face was written the answer that many died attempting to attain killed in a desert created by that sun. And when those searching, would ask the Old Man he would reply "Search farther than the eye can see and deeper than the hand can reach Search beyond tomorrow. Search where no man has ever gone nor will he ever go. " IV A paradox indeed The answer known only to those who have searched and found Search, Yes you as well for there is an answer for all who live. A patch of green where the answer is left untold. A patch of green . DEDICATIO
