BOARD LESSED by a much larger battalion with a more than average sense of alertness, the Cadet Corps this year under faculty and military super- vision, enlarged its scope of activity as a whole, and participated in many out- side activities with greater success than that of recent years. Besides its customary polished participation in the many San Diego parades, this year's battalion was honored by its selection to stand retreat at the California Exposition, in the absence of the crack company from the 30th infantry. Company A and Company B worked alternately with the Band during the earlier weeks of the Spring semester in this regard. Active also aneld, the battalion received more practical instruction in its extended order drills this year, moving out to adjoining hills to diagram with actions, miniature battles and hidden approaches. Although ruled with an iron hand by the commissioned oflicers, the bat- talion was braced in a military manner by Major E. M. Barnum and Captain Edward Brutschy, working in co-operation with Major john L. Davis and Captain Elmer Scudder of the Commandants office. Us 1 9 I8
