THE AGE YVE LIVE IN
We live in the s'Atomlc Agef' Not only has man learned to control the elements,
but he has progressed from a primitive civilization to a highly technical and
specialized form of what is called amodern living." Armstrong College, too, has
advanced and has turned out thousands of young men and women to master the
business world.
Starting with the practical skills, the program of Armstrong College was ex-
panded to include four-year college work in accounting, business management,
business education, secretarial administration, and world trade in 1923-241. The
graduate school was organized in 1929, the junior college division and the major
in the professional field of merchandising in 1932. Majors in credit management,
industrial management, finance and banking, insurace, real estate., advertising,
and sales management were first organized as complete professional majors in
1940. The major in business journalism was added in 1947, and the last major-
the major in traffic management-was organized in 1948.
The Associated Students was organized in the fall of 1923g tl1e Major Clubs
and the Advisory System were started about the same time. Most of the traditions

istrations have provided the leadership for the Associated Students of Armstrong
College.
Starting with a simple publication, the Private Secretary was edited and pro-
duced hy Donald Roland and Charles Savage. These were followed by other
newspapers entitled: The Sorting Tub, The Waste Basket, the Armstrong Journal,
and finally, the Knight. The publication of earlier works in this field was sporadic,
but more recently the college paper has come out about twice monthly.
The first yearbook, the Aldus, was published in 1925. Since that time, with
the exception of a few years during the great depression and Vlforld Watt' Il, the
Alflns has been issued annually.
Starting out with six students in June, 1918, one htzndred and sixteen in
October-four months later-and up to twelve hundred in 1947 and 1948 repre-
sents the growth in student attendance matching the growth in Berkeley.
The college was started in three rooms in the old First National Bank Building
at the corner of Shattuck and Center., moved to the U.C. Theater Building on
University Avenue in April, 1920, and into the present modern site at Harold
Way and Kitlredge on the 24th of November, 1923. ln 1950 the College purchased
the Frenzcl property on Bancroft Way for further classroom and building ex-
pansion.
Accompanying all these things came a refinement in educational organization
and the development of coordinated training plans fblueprintsj which have
represented a distinct contribution to the whole cause of American education.
ln all these ways, Armstrong College has kept pace with the rapidly advancing
'iatomic-minded" scientists who are creating a world that is not far from Utopia.
If business is your calling., master it and master it WELL.
