ESTHER P. ARMSTRONG
Mastery of subject matter is a worthy goal whether it be in the training for a
musician, an engineer, a farmer or a business student.
Today girls are taking their places beside their brothers in the important field
of business. Wl1a't would businesses large and small do if they were not? It would
be hard to answer. And how interesting and challenging young women are finding
their work in the business world. It would he difficult for 'them to picture them-
selves in the position, of their grandmothers, when it was considered improper for
a Hl'espectable" girl to venture beyond the field of teaching or nursing.
Marriage no longer means the end of a career for a young woman. Thousands
today are working full-time to assist husbands through their college preparation,
possibly taking a recess of a few years when their children are small. More than a
few women have returned to the ofiieewhen their children were old enough to
assume some of the household responsibilities. Children, in turn, have taken pride
in their mother's new hair style, her new business wardrobe, and the new alert-
ness which she has developed.
Those who have spent adequate time and effort to become well prepared for a
business position need not feel that they have something that will soon become
outmoded and useless. It will always be at hand ready to serve them. A short
period of brush-up may he needed, but how much better it is to be prepared than
to find oneself in a possible emergency at middle life with neither training nor
experience.
Hold on to your opportunity to train, master your subjects, build a scholarly
record, and you can take pride and Hnd satisfaction in your work. The world has
a place for you.
