Its ways are as old as the first who ever passed this way, but as new as each succeeding class. This is the trail through the high school years.. Many of the trails are well-traveled, but some students deviate from the normal course. Some succeed, others become discouraged. the trail is what each individual makes it for himself There is no doubt that the trail means confusing uncertainty. A person must not follow a trail only because it echoes the shuffling of feet. A closer look might reveal not feet, but the cleft hoofs of sheep. One must not become intoxicated with an A and be blind to the unwritten D’s. If the D’s are there, only the trail builder can remedy the weakness in the foundation. A good trail requires purpose, ambition, and unflinching courage. It requires penetrating scrutiny of the course ahead. There will always be the questioning and the decision. As opinions and prejudices are challenged, originality squeezes out and cuts a channel for growing up----- being able to sense the depth of knowledge, sportsmanship, and healthy pride. a person matures and stops assuming that he will get a trail for Christmas---a super, deluxe, ready-made trail, a multi-lane highway free from bumps and ruts, ice and fog The trail has its various moments. There is the swish of a formal and the sweet taste of punch; the mathematical formula and the dangling participle; the wonderful smile of a certain person and the unfaltering loyalty of a friend; the ball hurtling toward the basket, the ideas pulsating, coming to life within the mind; and the steady, unavoidable rushing of time along the trail. written by patricia jones photographed by graham swensen stillaguamish editor assistant editor copy editor layout editor art editor business manager photographer senior editor graham swensen diane jenft patricia jones miriam brooks cheryl wognild nancy huber curtis dalrymple susan hendrickson We dedicate this annual to Miss Nelda Ulery who teaches our girls the homemaking arts and cheerfully and generously gives her time to promote the activities of the students of Arlington High School. Miss Ulery came to Arlington in 1954 after teaching high school for two years at Gary, Indiana. Having graduated from Wenatchee High School, she received her B.A. in Home Economics from Man- chester College, Indiana, in 1951. In 1953 she completed her fifth year of college at the University of Washington, with a minor in biology. She attended the University of Colorado, Eastern Washing- ton State College, and the University of Puget Sound during sum- mer quarters. Miss Ulery has taught home economics, with occasional classes of art, during her years at Arlington High School. This year she is also teaching the Bishop Method of sewing for the Everett Junior College Adult Education classes at Arlington. 10 Mr. John Jenft, Administrative Assistant to the Superintendent, also conducts daily classes in duplication and bookkeeping. The curriculum and adult edcuation are under the direction of Mr. John Danubio. Mr. Ralph Pistorese, our Superintendent of Schools, reviews a financial account with his secretary, Mrs. Bonnie Hjort. Members of the School Board are, from left to right, Mr. Harley Robb, Mrs. Margaret Engstrom, Mr. Ray Tungate, Mr. Ralph Cady, and Mr. Charles Jackson. 12 there were changes in the district. . . A man with progressive ideas put into action is our new principal, Mr. Richard Johnson. He received his B.A. and Master’s degrees from Central Washington State College and did graduate work at Washington State University on grants from the National Science Foundation. Before coming to Arlington, Mr. Johnson taught at Quincy and Sacramento and was principal at Endicott. The school secretary, Mrs. Edna Running, takes care of myriad details for the smooth operation of the school. His boundless enthusiasm gave new scope to the plans and activities of the Class of 1965. Mr. Tschirgi introduced Senior Tag Day and organized several new social activities. His work with the Senior Class Play and the Junior-Senior Ball made them among the best ever presented at Arlington. With his warm wit and untiring drive, Mr. Tschirgi instilled added pride in the Senior Class and gave it the incentive to occupy its rightful place of distinction within the school.
