Each year a few students from far places come here to attend school. These students are part of the exchange pro- grams AFS and YFU CYouth for Understandingl. They learn all the American customs such as: baseball, hot dogs, and apple pie by living with American students. Zahari Arsenkov and Elba Meixueiro are the exchange students this year. Zahari is participat- ing in the AFS program and lives with Jim, Beth, and Tony Dunn. Zahari is from Yugoslavia. Elba, from Mexico, also with AFS, lives with Lisa Car- penter. Elba has been trying to come to America for four years. She finally made lt. Having an exchange student is the greatest experience, epxlained Lisa. There was a third exchange student who transferred to another school before second semester. His name is Ricardo Santana. He participated in YFU and lived in Brazil. Left. Let's get serious . . . Elba Meixueiro is in deep contemplation as she studies the ways of America in her U.S. History class. Books, lunches, and school activities are all paid for by the organizations. Some parents and teachers are involved in the AFS committee which helps raise money for the organizations. They often work the concession stands for foot- ball games. The students attend school as sen- iors and are honorary members of the Student Council. The students stay in America for a year. Before they go back to their home lands, they generally take trips with the organizations to such places as New York City. l will be so sad to see him go, remarked Beth Dunn, referring to Zahari. After awhile, they seem just like a brother or sister. You learn all about their traditions and customs. Besides just being fun and interesting, having an exchange stu- dent as a house guest is a real learning exper- ience, she concluded. Foreign Exchange Students!27
