HOWDY WEEK Seniorsg Iuniors Welcome New Classes Howdy Week, 1969, presented a new challenge. The returning dlunior and Senior Classes were ., , faced with the ifficult job of familiarizing sopho- S mores, and for the first time, freshmen, with the ' clubs and organizations on the Hill. To assist the students in etting acquainted, t tt? name ribbons were provider? during the week. :tai Halls were decked with posters, each vying with one another to interest prospective members to join their clubs. The organizations were given one last chance at the newcomers in a special program. Landing at 3 . Heights in their space ship, the SS Greencheese, f two moonmen were escorted and introduced by the ROTC to the various clubs, with each clu , ,af trying to persuade the moonmen to 'oin. The graduation exercises were conduct- ed at Will Rogers Memorial Audito- rium. Beauty Competition CLUB ACTIVITIES 4 School Functions Highlight Season Basketball games, beauty contests, and conven- tions were he d throughout the year, providing a change of pace for the student ody. In ecember, Allied Youth formed a basketball team challenging the KFIZ Courtjesters and KXOL Bumbling Basketeers. Led by seniors Bob Cauthen, Bill Lane, and lay Dee Iones, the A.Y. team never trailed, roaring to a 60-47 victory over the Iesters and a 56-48 win over the Basketeers. A.Y. beauties competed in a beauty contest with boys vying for the crown. Greg Fer uson emer ed victorious with class winners inclucing senior Igub Stocker, junior Pat O'Malley, sophomore Tom Mercer, and fresh- man Buddy Sample. NASA astronaut, Dr. Philli Chapman s oke to a special school assembly in Oliztober. Dr. Clhapman expressed his views on such subjects as having women astronauts, as well as answering questions from the floor. On December 6, three bus loads of journalism students attended the Texas Hi h School Press As- sociation Convention held at TXi1U in Denton. Pub- lications workers assembled for various sessions concerning yearbook, school newspaper, literary magazine, and photography. Bad weather hin- dered the annual picnic, but after eating in the buses, the staffers braved the drizzle for a game of touch football.
