MIDWAY SUMMIT CONFERENCE Although Midway had adequate naval communications for ordinary traffic, Fleet Headquarters sent the ARLINGTON to the isolated island more than 1,000 miles to the northwest of Hawaii to provide additional circuits for the influx of newsmen cover- ing the conference. Therefore ARLINGTON established, for relay via her powerful transmitters and sen sitive receivers, 10 two-way voice circuits that were channeled at Honolulu into reg- ular com ercial circuits to the continental U. S. A While ARLINGTON communicators maintained successful voice circuits for the press the remaining crew members explored the island and made acquaintance with the world famous inhabitants of the island, the aptly named gooney bird. Later, with the con- clusion of the conference, crew members gathered at the terminal to hear President Nixon's parting speech and see him board Air Force One for the trip back to Hawaii. A few men even had the good fortune to talk to and shake hands with the President.
