Joyce Tullos Ogburn Joyce Ogburn grew up in a large family in Cabot, Arkansas, attending public schools until high school when she first came to the Arkansas School for the Blind. After graduating from ASB in 1956, she attended college and received her bachelor's degree from the University of Central Arkansas. The next year she began teaching visually impaired children in a resource room of the St. Louis County School District in Missouri. In July 1962 Joyce married former ASB classmate, Leonard Ogburn, currently superintendent of the school, and they both accepted teaching assignments at the Virginia School for the Blind at Staunton tor the following fall. While in Virginia, Joyce earned a master's degree in special education for the visually impaired. She also became a mother in October 1966 when Lee Ann was born. ln the fall of 1971 the family returned to Arkansas and ASB with Joyce teaching in the primary grades until 1984 when she became resource teacher for the secondary school. Joyce was an active member in the Association for Education of the Visually Handicapped and had a national reputation in her field as an excellent teacher and resource person. ' Her love of children was evident to anyone who had the opportunity to observe her with her students. No amount of extra effort was too much for her to give them. Her interest in each one continued as he progressed through school. How fortunate are those students whose first impression of school was shaped by Mrs. Ogburn. Her death on July 7, 1985, was a great loss to the school, her friends, and especially her family. Joyce's attitude toward life is well summarized in these words of Emily Dickinson: lf I can stop one heart from breaking, l shall not live in vaing lf I can ease one life the aching, Or cool one pain, Or help one fainting robin Unto his nest again, l shall not live in vain. Two others with close ties to ASB died in the past year. Bernice Grantham, a former teacher who retired in 1974, died January 2, 1986, and Randy Hendricks, a former Parent-Teacher Council president, whose son Chad is a student at the school, died May 12, 1985. A fund was established last summer in memory of Joyce and Randy. The collection will be used to provide a playground especially designed for our elementary students.
