Former Athlete
ls Superintendent
At the age of 22, a young exfootball,
basketball, and track star, who had let-
tered in college sports, temporarily be-
came principal of a rural high school to
fill a vacancy left by the death of the oc-
cupant of this position. Later, he re-
turned to his desired career as an athle-
tic coach. In 1947, jerry Vineyard came
to Arkansas City, and since that time
has been superintendent of Arkansas City
schools . Dr. Vineyard is the father of
three children, and also the proud
grandfather of eight grandchildren.

H. J. Clark began his teaching career
forty-one years ago in a rural school.
He was principal one year at the elemen-
tary school in Haven, Kansas, and also
principal two years in the junior high.
Having participated in all athletic events
in high school, and having been on the
Emporia State track team, he was also
an able athletic coach for Haven High
School. He later taught and coached at
Turon and Kingman. On August 20, 1927,
he was hired as principal of departmental
schools in Arkansas City. He became a
member of the ACHS faculty ln 1936.
Today, he is principal, and has been for
thirteen years . A father of three daugh-
ters, Marjorie, Naomi, and Joyce, and
one son, Bill, he has a deep understand-
ing of young people. All of his children
were graduated from ACHS. He also
has ten grandchildren.
