PANAMA CITY Panama City is the capital of The Republic of Panama. Located on the Pacific side of the isthmus it was founded by the first Spanish royal governor, Pedrarias, in 1514. There are 3 distinct sections of Panama City; Old Panama City, New Old Panama City, and New Panama City. Old Panama City was burnt down in 1518 by the English Pirate, Henry Morgan. New Old Panama was built further from the ocean so it would be protected from pirate raids. New Panama City is a modern city with many high-rise buildings. Its growth was spurred on by a change in banking laws in 1970 that has made Panama the sixth largest financial center in the world. The ARKANSAS arrived in Panama about 10 months after Opera- tion Just Cause . ARKANSAS Sailors got to see the empty field where General Noriega's military headquarters stood prior to the invasion. They also got to see his home and House of the Papal Nuncio where he took refuge after he was driven from power. 18 lUMrUiHimi
