Treasured Echoes Nineteen Seventy-Six Volume Twenty-Eight Argyle High School Argyle, WisconsinForeword High school is a period of personal enrichment, not only scholastically, but socially, through interactions with other students and faculty members. The high school years pass swiftly, but produce many lifelong memories to which you will find yourself returning again and again. On the following pages is a collection of memories accumulated during the 1975-1976 school year at A.H.S. We on the annual staff hope that you will look with pride and pleasure on these brief glimpses into activities, organizations, classes and friendships that have had a major part in the development of the Argyle student. The Argyle Orioles won their first championship since the league went from 8-man to 11-man football in 1963, sharing top honors with Pecatonica, both with 7-1 league records. It was a veteran team, most players having three years experience. The Orioles began by beating eventual runnerup New Glarus 14 to 6 and then played better defeating Juda 28 to 12. Argyle took a long road trip to sneak past Marshall 6 to 0 in a defensively strong non-conference game. Next came the toughest game of the season, homecoming at Pecatonica. In what the Argyle fans called a great upset the Orioles lost 14 to 6. Argyle didn't give up after one loss but came right back taking out’ their frustrations on Belleville 36 to 14. In the last four games they took Barneveld 26 to 8, blanked Brodhead 35 to 0, excitingly sneaked past Black Hawk 7 to 0 in overtime, and in their final game clobbered Holy Name 66 to 26. JP. Big things were expected of the basketball varsity but a championship did not materialize. At times the team was very inspired and knocked off each of the three teams that finished ahead of it, and at times really disappointed the fans by not putting forth their best effort. Imagine beating champion Brodhead on their home court for only the second time in twenty-five years and in the same season being upset by lowly Barneveld. Jerry Pittz was the team leader and scored the most points having 20 or more points in eight games, two of them 30 or over. Brian Nelson had four games of 20 or more and was the team rebound leader. Rick Penniston was over 20 once, shot well from outside and complimented Jerry at the guard position. The team's weakness was at the other two positions which were not filled brilliantly, only adequately by several other team members. 4647Junior Varsity Champions CONFERENCE ALL GAMES TEAM w L Pet TP OP W L Pet. Coach Klarner had five sophomores who really wanted to play championship basketball and they did just that in compiling a 15-1 record in conference play to win the state line league junior varisty title. No Argyle j.v. team in at least 25 years has had such an outstanding record. Marco Flannery and Perry Graber provided height to demolish previous rebounding records. Tom Rossing's outside shooting made defenses open up. Lee Montgomery's double threat of an effective soft shot and additional rebounding kept other teams honest. Tom Tree provided floor leadership and led in assists. Outside of these five starters freshman Joe Coffey was the first substitute and kept improving as the season progressed. It is hoped that this team can effectively provide more than adequate replacements on next year's varsity squad. ( 48Girls Basketball Girls basketball had its first year at A.H.S. Since yearbook materials must be submitted months ahead of the track season, last year's Treasured Echoes only carried a picture of the proposed team. This is the first track team from Argyle to win a conference championship. The team total was 82 points, four more than Holy Name (78) who had won the three previous titles. In order followed Brodhead (77), Black Hawk (58), Juda (53), New Glarus (45), Pecatonica (25), Belleville (22), Albany (20) and Monticello (5). Contributing points to the winning total were Steve Rossing with firsts in the 100 yd. dash (:10.1), low hurdles (20.5) and long jump and a secpnd in the 220 yd. dash; Brian Nelson with a first in the high jump, a second in the high hurdles, and thirds in the discus and low hurdles; Bob Golackson with a second in the 440 yd. dash; Dan Bredeson with a fifth in the discus; and a fourth by the mile relay team of Scott Ritschard, Steve Larson, Tom Tree and Bob Golackson. Steve Rossing went on to the State Track Meet and was nosed out of the first place medal in the low hurdles and won points for Argyle, the first in ten years. 50ABOVE FRONT: Cathy Cooper, Julie Swingen, Denise Nelson, Mary Johnson, Sue Larson, Marta Anderson, Rona Erickson, Connie Garrison.
