EDITORIAL
HE PURPOSE of the Amerlcan school system IS to prepare the student as well as possnble
for his later life Although stnctly speaking the art of soclal graces ns not included lh
the regular curnculum It IS as important to the student as algebra French chemistry etc
Once out ln the world we must talk work and play w th others and unless we have mas
tered the art of gettxng along wlth people we are serlously handicapped It IS the oplmon of
everyone m school that the Soclal Club IS a step ln the achievement of thls arm
The Social Club ns not as nts name mlght lmply a club wnth restrlcted membership dues
or other encumbrances It IS rather a penod of recreatxon ln whlch any hugh school student
be he jew Aryan Catholic or Protestant may partlclpate These students gather to play
pxng pong dance llsten to the music or just to Indulge 1n the fine art of conversatlon Thus
under the supervlslon of a teacher who has made the guidance of youth ln extra currxcular
actlvltxes her llfe s work the prlnclples of cooperatlon and tol rance that IS those of Amen
camsm are pamlessly assnmllated
For the last five years there has been a Dark Age ln socxal actrvltles that rs there have
been few partnes and those that have been held have not been too successful The reason
for thls has not been poor supervnslon but that the number of puplls who knew how to
dance was comparatxvely small Thxs IS bemg remedied by the Soclal Club so that many
students who never danced before the advent of the Social Club glide gracefully over the
floor
Another serious defect of these partles was that the non dancers drd not know how to
play any game well enough to be thoroughly mterested m lt therefore they might easnly get
into trouble This ns bemg remedied by the Soclal Club whlch supplies the necessary equip
ment and the opportunity for learmng Thus the pupxls have had the actual enjoyment of

The Social Club remedies the deficiencies ln the student body s social educatlon and lt
also gets the pupils together so that they may discuss thexr ndeas about war peace lnfe lub
erty and the pursuxt of happiness They learn another s vxewpomt and realize that there are
two sldes to every argument They learn that all Germans aren t bad and by the same token
that all Englxshmen aren t good They learn that although the Republicans may be strong ln
thelr hatred of Democrats they both have the same purpose to make Amenca better
ln short the Social Club IS the connectmg lmk between students and provides opportunlty
for the students to acquire the socnal graces lt IS everybody s club without partlallty and
wlth a hearty welcome for all
The student body ns very grateful to Miss Saunders for her efforts nn founding and guxdmg
the soclal hour and hopes that next year her efforts will be rewarded by a bugger and better

SENIORS
LTHOUGH ANXIOUSLY WAITING to experience what the four long years held ID
tore for us elther torturlng moments or joyful unforgettable events we as Freshmen
colorfully attlred ln newlv purchased frocks and suxts marched self consclously to our Alma
Mater early ln September 1936
We gamed much valuable experlence from our first two projects whlch conslsted of a food
sale and a movie but ln our Sophomore year when we realized that our Washmgton trlp
was drawing nearer we decided to work dxllgently for a more successful year Chief Sun
flower was our first program for the new year and was followed by the Easter Egg and Cake
Sale ln addltlon we sold Schrafft s candy at the home basketball games and thxs delighted
everyone
Wlth fresh splrlts and hxgh ambltlons our class now full fledged Juniors started the ball
rolllng by wmnmg first place IH the Senior Magazme Campaign But our progress was not to
end there We soon undertook our first project when we sponsored Spawn of the North
at the Embassy Theatre followed by an After Easter Cake Sale
Our most important enterprise was the l939 Ardsleyan which proved to be a great
success and which expanded conslderably our Washington Trip Fund
We as dlgnlfied Seniors eagerly looked forward to the numerous actxvltles which con
fronted us The followmg class offxcers were elected Ruth Gubler Presldent Howard Con
nors Vice Presldent Fannie D Angelo Secretary and jack Krassner Treasurer
The Senlor Subscription Campaign was glven vigorous support by the entlre hugh school
whose efforts were rewarded by a subscrlptlon party
A successful food sale was enthusxashcally supported by the members of the class and the
result surpassed our fondest expectatlons
The Ghost of Grand Canyon our semor play occupied first place ln our minds The
presentation took place on April 5 Realizing that our dream of the Washington Trip would
soon become a reallty we looked forward wlth eagerness to April I5 whlch wlll no doubt
llnger ln our memories for years to come
As the year draws to a close we look forw ard to a promlsmg future of great achlevements
and success m our chosen vocations and yet we cannot wrrte 61115 to our hugh school career
wlthout ln some way expresslng our deep gratltude to all our teachers who have been pillars
of strength and encouragement to us throughout these past four years whlch although fun
for all have contamed their share of trials and trlbulatlons It was their lnvaluable aSSlSt
ance that alded us ln conquermg these obstacles This year the production of the semor
play has meant a great deal more work for all especially for our advlser Mass Buell who
dlrected It To her go our sincerest thanks for all the valuable tlme and energy she spent
m msurmg nts success

BAND
Encouraged by the success achreved durmg lts first year of orgamzatlon the band
started the new term wlth great hopes and ambltxons for bigger and better accompllshments
After a few short rehearsals to get rld of any rust that mrght have accumulated during
the long summer vacatnon the band delighted an apprecxatrve audience at the Armlstlce

Wrth the comrng of the basketball season our young muslclans tuned up the1r rnstru

road to victory but to entertam the spectators and keep them out of mlschxef betwe n
those very trymfv quarters The band often rendered nts services at the pep assemblxes
to help put new llfe and confidence mto our team
Our younger musxcxans not to be outdone by the older fellows organized a begmners
band and orchestra which IS growmg by leaps and bounds m numbers and quallty of per

To our drrector Mr Vlncent who has labored so tirelessly for our betterment go

ORCHESTR
fn
The year l939 has been an unusually Important year to hlstorlans and to the orches
tra It has b en a year that many of the members will remember for years to come
Last Aprxl for the first time ln the hlstory of the organization we Jolned the New York
State School Music Assocxatlon and Mr Vmcent confldent that we were not the worst mu
slcal Group ln Westchester made arrangements for us to compete m the Southeastern
New York State Competition Festival at Port Ch ster To our great Joy and surprlse we
were declared ellglble for the state finals at Amsterdam
Through the cooperation and generoslty of the good people of Ardsley we were able
to raise suffxclent funds to transport all the members of the orchestra to Amsterdam
There we played before the Judges Our joy knew no llmlts when several days later reports
were recelved from the officials declaring the Ardsley Hugh School Orchestra had been
rated the thlrd best of lts slze ln the state'
Ar the commencement of the new term we found that graduation had taken xts
toll of many of the older and more experlenced muslclans but the orgamzatxon has been
gradually rebullt through the addltlon of enthusiastic members
To further his program for deeper appreclatlon of better muslc Mr Vlnc nt enabled
the members of the orchestra to attend a serles of instrumental recltals ln New York Cnty
We wlsh to join Wlth the band ln expressing our gratitude to Mr Vincent hopmg he
wxll conduct us for many years to come

HONOR SOCIETY
On une 5 1929 the first meeting of the Executive Committee of the Honor Society
was recorded in the present secretary s book Now the three hundred pages are almost full
and everyone of them bears mention of Honor Society activities Through many years to
the present time the organization has flourished
This year the group has carried on under the able leadership of Ruth Gubler presi
dent Graham Bell vice president Marianna lgrlschmann secretary and Edwin Wheeler
treasurer The members of the group wish to express their ratitude to their adviser Miss
Conklin for her untirlng efforts
Again the torch of l939 lighted the torch of l940 on December l as forty one

of the committee who had worked so dill ently at both of these functions
who supervised the work of the society The Pep Sheet providing the high school with
news and the treasury with funds was published
Soon we will again xrltiate our new members into the Third Degree have our picnic
and so complete the annual cycle
Ever the Honor Society grows maintaining the high standards lt set at its founding
and provldmg in a small way a reward for those who have aided their school in scholar
ship service attendance conduct and welcoming strangers
Marianna Frischmann
STUDENT COUNCIL
The most important activity of the Student Council this year was the mmstrel show
which although it had been an annual feature of the past had been discontinued for
several years and finally revived again by that greatest mmstrel man ever known ln Ards
ley the one and only lVlr Charles W Horencl
On the night of October 27 l939 as the endle s crowds filled the high school audi
torlum many of the high school students and members of the faculty revealed their hid
den talents
Part of the proceeds of this mmstrel was used in installing a plaque in the clinic in
memory of our beloved physician the late Dr George Q Johnson

AMERICA FOR ME'
MERICA to me IS a wonderful country One of the best thlngs lt offers IS freedom
People lxvmg m other countrres surely must realize that freedom rs one of the greatest
advantages a country can provide ln Amerxca we have freedom of speech and of the
press we can always express our own opmnons and partrcrpate or lxsten to broadcasts and
read newspapers whxch are not censored Some of the first settlements In thus country were
for the purpose of relrgrous freedom whlch we have en1oyed ever smce Our government
as Abraham Lincoln stated IS of the people by the people and for the people That
IH my opxnnon IS a great lrberty whlch makes me glad to be an American
As has oftentimes been saxd Amerrca rs a land of opportunlty We have the oppor
tunlty to advance our educatlon as far as we have ambltlon enough to do so ln America
there are many schools umversxtres academies and colleges Another opportunxty IS that
we are allowed our own choice of work We can choose the work of a common laborer or
even of a college professor We are also gnven a chance to develop the finer arts such as
sculpturlng palntlng or music
As Americans we enjoy a hugh standard of llvlng Instead of having our food meted
out to us m small quantltles we have the prlvxlege of purchaslng as large an amount of food
as we wlsh to We always are certaln that we lxve ln pnvacy OEICCTS or soldlers never
enter our homes wlthout permlsslon
America IS a peace loving natlon too lts people believe ln strlvlng for peaceful settle
ments of difficulties wlth other natlons Peace xs one of the grandest things enjoyed by the
Amerlcan people and we hope that never wlll the Umted States become mvolved ln a war
Many convenlences are enjoyed m thrs wonderful land We have all the modern types
of transportatlon good homes and modern working equipment America also contains many
natural resources which keep us supplied wxth fuel and matenal to work wlth ln all l thunk
Amerlca rs the grandest country m the world and l d never have the desxre to lnve elsewhere
Patrlcla Monfort
