SENIORS
In September 1956, a very green but a very large Freshman Class
entered the high school department.
The first activity, which we participated in as Freshmen, was the
annual Senior Subscription Campaign. Although we did not win any prize,
we did bring in more subscriptions than any other class.
Realizing that thirty-six members in the class was the largest
enrollment a Freshman Class had ever had, we immediately made plans for
raising funds for our Washington Trip. Two very successful cake sales
took place, and a movie was presented which enriched our treasury.
As Sophomores, the end of the subscription campaign found us highest
on the list as to the number of subscriptions sold and as to the amount
of money collected. During the year we sponsored the usual cake sales
and movies.
Again, in our Junior year, proving our salesmanship ability, we sold
the greatest number of subscriptions in the magazine campaign.
Through the untiring efforts and cooperation of Miss Clayton and
other members of the faculty we were able to put forth the 1958 Ardsleyan,
a bigger and better book, and also add to our Washington fund a tidy sum.
Before we realized it, we were dignified Seniorsg our Washington
trip was right before us. To carry out the duties of the class officers
we elected the followinr Pres'dent, Freda Wille, Vice-presddent, James
Mackenzie, Secretary, mdlth Frischmann, Treasurer, Clara Maori
Early in the ycar we undertook the subscription campaign, one of
the important enterprises of the year Ne were very grateful for the
loyal support of the student body Our bank account was improved con
slderably as a result of this successful project
With the assistance of our mother we were able
party which was successful both socially and financially
to sponsor a card
Soon the words, 'Ever bodj's Crazy, were on the lips of everyone
around the villa e Yes, it was the title of the Senior Play which we
had chosen On march 51 we presentcd our play to a large and ap recla
tive audience
A little more than a week later we were on our may to Washinvton,
the trip of our dreams, for wh ch we had worked and planned for four
long years The trip roved :ell worth all our efforts Yes, well
worth it, for it was an adventure that will long llnrer in our memories
Our hiah school career is almost ended, soon me shall receive our
diplomas and leave the portals of Ardsley High where we have spent four
years filled with worthwhile accomplishments and happy times
Edith Frischmann
IN MEMORIAM VIVIAN WALDEMAR
The Sen ors have never for otten Vivian Waldemar who was a classmate
until the fourth rrade when sudoenl that quiet, conscientious friend was
taken from them Although she is no longer here, her mother has taken a
deep interest in her class, and alwavs willingly and cheerfully has
contributed to all its projects We, the Seniors, are very grateful to
her for all she has done to perpetuate Viv1an's memory

We came back to high school as Juniors last autumn with fresh spirits and high
ambitions Ne proved this by winning first place in sales in the annual Senior
Magazine Campaign
During the basketball season, the Junior Inter Class teams proved themselves
willing athletes, showing the true sportsmanship we all admire Je were also well
represented in the various intra mural teams
Various other school organizations such as the Senior Chorus, Honor Society,
Band, and Orchestra did not find the Juniors lacking in participation
Our first project was the sponsoring of a movie, 'Spawn of the North,' at the
Embassy Theater in Dobbs Ferry Our Washington Trip Fund took quite a hopeful leap
throu h this enterprise A plan for an after Faster cake sale is now in progress
Our latest and most important undertaking is the 1939 Ardsleyan We sincerely
hope that this Ardsleyan will provide all, in future yea s, with pleasant memories of
the sportsmanship enjoyed in Ardsley High School
The class ofxicers, who have led us well were reelected in Janu Th

As the school bell tolled forth its joyous opening welcome, a group of gay young
pupils strutted intelli ently into the Sophomore room No longer were we Qthe Sopho
mores, of cou1s 3 green, inexperienced Freshmen, but having undergone the tortures of
the initiation the previous fall, me were full fled ed 'high schoolariansf full of
anticipation of initiating the ner lreshman Class This we did m rcllessly Ve wish
to convratulate the Freshmen on the splendid sportsmanship they showed at that time
with the realization that our nashinrton trip fund must be increased, we held a
food sale late in October The results surpassed our foncest ex,ectations and ve want
to thank all who contributed for it, and especially Yr A fleck for the use of his
showroom which made it all possible In an effort to incxease our finances, we planned
a card and bineo party for January, Friday the 13th It really see ed as thou h the
Jinx predonirat d on that day, for a snowstorm, which dwarfted the blizzard of '88
raced throuvh our little town drivir everyone to his corfortable fireside Full of
confidence that our friends would not fail us, we carried out our plans, and sure
enou T, trrouvh the fury of the bllndin bli arc they trudred, slowly but surely
To all those who supported our project despite the Lreat h1rdica,, oes our deepest
rntitude for turninc an unlucky day into a lucky one
Ve realize, however, that it was not our efforts alone that have made such a
memorable and succcs ful year, but also the efforts of the teachers, who have rend red
their patient, necessary a'd so w'll1n ly To them we one a vreat debt of gratitude
To Miss Hap ood, our home room teacher, who me feel has been nearest to us, skillfully
uiding us over the weak spots and enccura inc us over the better roads, standing by
us faithfully Jn tim s of success or fallure, ro our heartfelt thanks and ap r ciation
for her c a less fidelity, instruction, and quldance

The Ardsley High School Orchestra under the leadership of Fr Mitchell C
Vincent has made excellent progress this ear It has become more a part of the
school curriculum and has given us the opportunity to broaden our musical background
and to develop a sense of appreciation for the better type of music
Ne have played for a number of assemblies and have given an outside appearance
The students' favorite selection seemed to be 'The Blue Danube" by Richard Strauss
In addition to this beautiful waltz, we learned to play marches, overtures, several
symphonic arrangements, and other incidental music
There are now 32 members in the orchestra The brass and wood wind section has
increased, and the violins now total twelve
For the first time in the history of the Ardsley Orchestra, the outstanding
members have been honored by being presented with colorful emblems These emblems
were earned by the combined efforts of the band and orchestra at s cake sale
The orchestra will lose many of its players this year due to Senior graduation
Among those replaced by new members will be the percussion section, slide trombone,
violins, and bass viol

THE HOME ECONOMICS DEPARTMENT
Last summer during the vacation the old coal bin and play room in the girls'
basement was renovated and made into a cafeteria and foods laboratory. With this
delightful improvement in the department, the students have taken a renewed and
invigorated interest in their work. Many pleasures are derived while working in the
bright homelike atmosphere of the new kitchen. Here a study of food--its selection,
preparation, and serving--of good manners and courtesy, and planning for special
occasions are made. Often,as a review lesson,a complete breakfast or luncheon is
planned, prepared, and served, each class member sharing in the responsibilities as
well as in the pleasures.
Occasionally the department is asked to serve at some particular function. When
asked to serve a tea, the students prepare dainty sandwiches, cakes, or cookies,
arrange an attractive table, and serve the guests. It is considered quite a privilege
if allowed to pour. Esmee Clark, Ruth Gubler, Blanche Allen, Christine Grandolfi,
Fannie D'Angelo, Edith Frischmann, and others have often assisted on such occasions.
In the clothing classes the enthusiasm runs high. The girls thoroughly enjoy
planning and making some of their own clothes. While instruction goes on, a study of
colors, textiles, appropriateness of dress and style for each individual is emphasized.
Aprons and pot holders are made in the fifth grade, while silk or wool dresses and
good looking little suits are made by the high school groups. Often one of these has
to be finished rather quickly for a school party or dance.
Some time during the spring term each year the department has a clothing exhibit.
At this time the students from all classes bring back the various articles of cloth-
ing which they hav made during the year Sometimes tea is served We appreciated
the enthusiasm and interest displayed at last year's exhibit
The eighth grade girls featured a very lovely and interesting display of party
dresses as an assembly program last June As each dress, worn by the maker, was shown

Our interest lies not only in the study of foods and clothing but also in other
phases of home management, interlor decoration, chfld care, family relationships, and
finances Budgeting or the 'spending of money,' an important factor to all, has been
inv stipated and discussed, especially in its relation to the girls themselves as a
benefit now and in preparing for the future
In one course a study of the high school v1rl's clothing budget is made and the
effect on one of the proper choice of clothes, general appearance, speech, personality
and social acceptability are all considered in a helpful and concrete way The impor
tance of grooming is constantly brought to the foreground when the occasion demands

Once again, as we bring the basketball season to a close, we have two honor
teams of which we are very proud. Having been selected after a strenuous intra-mural

Throughout the entire season, whether winning or losing, the girls have shown a
fine spirit, and a commendable brand of sportsmanship, which has earned them many

BGS BASKETBALL
The interest shown by the students in inter-class basketball reached
such a high peak that lt became necessary to divide the high school into
two divisions. The National League was made up of teams from the Freshman
B and C Classes, and The American League was made up of teams from the
Junior and Senior Classes.
Both leagues proved very popular and interesting, and after a hard
schedule of games, the Freshman B boys were crowned the champions of their
division.
In The American
League the Senior Boys, known as the Senior 'One' Boys,
won the championship
of their league.
In the play-off
between these two teams before three hundred students,
the Senior Class won
the championship of the school and with lt the right
to add their class name to the inter-class banner. The total number of
boys participating on inter-class teams was sixty.
A vote of appreciation from the boys and the physical director goes to
the Varsity and Junior Varsity Boys who gave their services as referees for
these games.
GIRLS lNTl-ZR-CLASS BASKETBALL
This year, with fifty three girls out for intra mural and inter class
basketball, found us playing through a long season, stretching from November
to March
The intra mural teams, consisting of from eight to ten players, took
such names as WThe Sons of the Revolution,' 'Avalons,' 'Little Giants,
'Dead End Kids, nstablemates, and The Thunderbolt These games we
played on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons
The Sons of the Revolution, consisting of Senior Girls, came through a
seven game schedule without suffering a single defeat, The Avalons, con
sisting mainly of Sophomores, lost only one game The Little Giants and
Dead End Fids emerged neck and neck as third place winners The winning
intra mural team, The Sons of the Revolution, finally played the Alumni,
and added one more to their list of victories
From these intra mural teams, a team was chosen to represent each class
Seven of the players of The Sons of the Revolution comprised the Senior Team,
and again these girls swept through their schedule without a loss The
Sophomores, made up mainly from The Avalons, were second, with the Juniors
third, and Freshmen, fourth As the winning class team, the Seniors defeated
a mixed faculty team, not only once but twice Thus they made their total
winnings for intra murals and lnter class thirteen wins to no losses, a
com endable record The seven girls responsible for this record are Viola
Wilbur, Christine Grandolfi, Moira Keane, Blanche Allen, Edith Frischmann
Margaret IcHenry, and Phyllis Campbell, all of the above making either the
first or second honor team
All through the season a fine brand of sportsmanship and cooperation was
exhibited, and so we close our season, with a farewell and a wish of luck
our Senior champions, and with a 'Wait 'til next year,n for our
players

THE WORLD OF TOMORROW
'Somewhere within their walls shall
all that forwards perfect human life be started,
Tried, taught, advanced, visibly exhibited '
How easily can these lines, quoted from the vision of which Walt
Whitman sang, be adapted to the great fair which shall indubitably sur
pass in every respect any similar event ever attempted or staged in the
past, namely the great 1939 New York World's Fair
Every worthwhile thing, be it great or humble, must possess some
motive for its being, and the purpose for this truly colossal exhibit
is not lacking Exactly one hundred and fifty years ago, America was,
in reality, on the threshold of an entirely new and untried experience
that of setting up for itself an independent government, with a presi
dent at its head No one could foresee then, on that thirtieth day of
April 1789, when George Washington was inaugurated as President of the
United States, those inevitable ups and downs which every nation, well
established or not, must face Washington himself stated in his inaugu
ral address at New York City 'ThQ,preservat1on of the sacred fire of
liberty and the destiny of the republican model of government are justly
considered as deeply, perhaps as finally staked, on the experiment en
trusted to the hands of the American people Yes, one hundred and
fifty years have elapsed since that day, America has undeniably graduated
from that early experimental stage vlth a government which has survived
the years, therein lies the theme of the great fair to glorify and
sing out the praises of democracy as a most advantageous system of
government for Amer1ca's citizens A com emoration of the one hundred
and fiftieth anniversary of Washington's inauguration and the commenc
ing of an experiment in democracy true, but there are other purposes
Here is a section of the statement issued by the Com ittee on Theme
nThe New Yorl Iorld's Fair is planned to be 'everyman's fa1r,' to s ow
the way toward the 1 provoment of all the factors contributing to human
welfare The plain American citizen will be able to see here what
can attain for his community and himself by intelligent coordinated
effort and will be made to realize the interdependence of ever con
tributing form of life and work ' It's another way of saying Go to
itl You see here what can be done the materials, the tools are avail
able, look into the future and prepare yourselves you are the builders
o the world of tomorrow ' To what ertent this ideal will be an incen
tive to thousands of Americans, only the energy and future determination
of he cou try and its inhabitants can reveal
Its intricate planning and architecture, so extremely interesting
and unusual, is one of the favorite points emphasized in every review
of the exposition 'From dump to glory' is a frequently used phrase in
reclamation and transformation of this tract of'wastelandF and it was
precisely that, is openly recognized as having been the largest sinrle
reclamation project ever undertaken in the eastern section of the United
States Aren't you satisfied that the New York Vor1d's Fair is sufficient
evidence of what man can do with the assistance of modern equipment and
eng1neering9 Perhaps one of the most noteworthy points is the fact that
the millions of dollars alloca ed to the task of preparing the way for
the fair shall not have been invested in vain The trees, flowers, and
shrubs, in fact, all that contribute to the beautifying of the grounds
are to be preserved in order that they may form a part of one of the
reatest narks in the world one and a half times as large as famed

All this reclamation work, however, was just a beginning. The
actual erection of the fair was the miracle to be performed. Every-
thing had to be planned, designedg architects and engineers had to oe
procured, not to mention sculptors and artists. Competent men were to
transform the vision into a reality. Thus it would take men and work,
two indispensable intermediaries, to accomplish the translation of a
dream into an actuality.
General restrictions were agreed upon by all participants in the
fair for the common interest, in order to lend unity as well as dignity
to the appearance of the main avenues. With the exception of controlling
the scale and color, no plan of uniformity as to the design or pattern
of the general layout was adopted. The idea of temporary exhibits was
stressed, and it was interesting to notice in connection with this that
no imitations, whatsoever, of historic architecture or of permanent
materials were to be displayed with the exception of those contained
in the States' exhibits.
Perhaps one of the points which received the severest criticism that
has been offered with regard to the fair is its bold use of color.
Everything is brightly arrayed in vivid huesg the monotony of drab,
undecorated walls has been broken. Every effort on the part of those
trained in the use of color has been expended in the development of a
color scheme pleasing, as well as soothing, to the eye. As a matter
of fact, the Trylon and Perisphere are the only buildings white in their
entirety, for the various avenues leading away from them present vary-
ing tones of the spectrum colors. Many ingenious optical illusions
have been created by the many colored lighting effects, and the
abundant use of the reds, blues, and yellows certainly will add to
the visitors' enjoyment The size of the undertaking and the success
with which it has been carried out prove that only throu h the
op mistic perseverance and the comoined skill of man and machine
could any such work as thls have been completed
A most important part of the fair has as yet been left unmentioned,
for the actual zoning of the fair and the exhibits that may be seen
are certainly worth of everyone's admiration
The4Theme Center itself is one of the most impressive sights It
is difficult to appreciate the fact that the giant three sided figure,
the Trylon, rises a majestic seven hundred feet into the air bes1de an
enormous hollow globe, the greatest ever attempted by man The Perl
sphere's dimensions are astounding it is wider than a city block and
has a capacity double that of the q3d1O Clty music Hall An extremely
interesting scheme has been devised to create the appearance of the
Per1shpere's being a huge floating ball Innumerable fountains serve
to throw a heavv mist around the globe and great mirrors encase the
supporting columns to conceal them from si ht Nithin the sphere is
depicted a model city wlth a working population of 250,000 whose
homes are situated beyond the city proper in five satellite towns
Two revolv'nv platforms of mam oth size will carry thousands of
spectators around for a seven minute show There is no question but
that the Theme Center will e the high spot of the entire exhibition
The rest of the fair is divided into nine zones Amusement,
Communications and Business Svstems, Community Interests, Food,
Jovernment, Medical and Bubllc Health, Production and Distribution
Science and Education and Transportation There is not sufficient
space in an article such as this to elaborate on the var'ous sections
of the fair, it is sufficient to state that tley w'll certainly be the
greatest of their kind in history Beyond a doubt this veritable
fairyland will prove to be the most amazing and fasclnatlng ever, a
world's falr not soon to oe forgotten The Editor

Now, we figure the thing out differently.

On second thought, we think the above figures are

entirely wrong.
lf Eve 8 and Adam 82, certainly the total would be 90.
Scientific men, however, on the strength of the
theory that the antediluvians were n race of giants,
reason something like this. Eve 81 and Adam 82-
total 168.
Wrong again. What could be clearer than if Eve
81 and Adam 812, the total was 893?
We believe the following to be the true solution:
Eve 814 Adam and Adam 8124 Eve-total 8,988 lf
Eve 814 Adam, Adam 81242 oblige Eve-total, 82,056
