EDITORIAL BUILDING CHARACTER
The blggest problem before Ardsley and Amerlca IS to educate lts rlslng
generatlon to want to do rlght Knowledge IH ltself IS but a tool whlch may
be employed as well by a forger or fraudulent promoter as by an honest
PYOQYCSSIVC cltlzen Even the gangster knows rlght from wrong but that
knowledge by ltself does not prevent hlm from dolng wrong
I-Ionesty perseverance regard for others and klndred qualltles are more
valuable than much Latln or many mathematlcs lf one must choose between
them for character IS the guldlng force that determlnes what use shall be
made of the facultles one possesses Character IS bullt on a foundatlon of
ldeals and more than any other agency the home determlnes the ldeals of
the rlslng generatlon Ixhose chlldren whose home lnfluence sends them to
church or Sunday school regularly seldom brlng dlscredlt on the famlly name
Year by year however these Ofood old fashloned homes are dlsappear
mf' and thelr responslbllltles Iald at the door of the school Probably every
one of us can remember some devoted t acher whose lnfluence made a deep
lmpresslon on hls Ilfe In those days character tralnlng was lncldental now
It has become one of the blg concerns of the school
The I-Ionor Society the Student Councll the athletlc teams the class
room organlzatlons all have thelr dutles thelr responslbllltles thelr ldeals
Turn back to the dedlcatlon of thls annual and read the code that regulates
the Ardsley I-Ilgh School athletlcs Turn to the I-Ionor SOCICLY sectlon and
read the pledge of membershlp Turn to the back of the book where under
Student Leaders of Ardsley Hlgh the names of those past and present
leaders are perpetuated and reallze the ldeals they set up and supported
to become worthy of thls honor
Ardsley I-Ilgh School has been worklnv on thls problem of character for
a long tlme Whlle lt has not yet affected all puplls who need It the deflnlte
pollcy of placlng responslblllty encouraglng leadershlp stresslng servlce and
then glvlng recognltlon for real accompllshments has had tremendous results
School people can sense the Splflt almost lmmedlately but everyone can ap
preclate the fact that a small school llke Ardsley IS more than holdlng lts own
scholastlcally and athletlcally among the leadlng schools of Westchester
County All can see the results but only to the few ln lntlmate Contact wlth
student affalrs IS glven the prlvllege of seelng the lndlvldual acts of courave
unselflshness and SCYVICC on whlch character IS bullt

LIBRARY ATMOSPHERE
Fortune has bestowed upon the students of Ardsley Hrgh School a well
equlpped lxbrary Through the efforts of Mlss Buell our llbrarlan lt rs kept
pleasant and home llke But like all Good prlvlleges the llbrary IS abused
Students are lncllned to be careless and neglect the feelmgs of others They
fall to realize that the library xs a place for study research work and contem
platlon Silence should rergn and an atmosphere of studlous quiet should
prevall There are other places for talklng fooling and norse We have all
been a but careless of our lrbrary conduct during the past year Therefore ln
the future let us try to make up for our laxness and create for our library
the proper atmosphere
