Senior Class History
In the year of 1947 forty-four little children entered Grade School for the first time. Mrs. Walter was the teacher
The students were: Charlene Nafziger, Arlene Sauder, Sharon Greiser, Merle Beck, Dean Rupp, Rollin Nafziger,
Cloyce Nofziger, Nola Nofziger, Louona Gisel, Sandra Maust, Doris Miller, Ray Trejo, Kenny Graber, Jeanette Wyse,
Mary Gerken, Patsy Gisel, Stanley Ruffer, Michael Wyse, Joyce Rychener, Juliene Crossgrove, Merle Greisa, Ronny
Leupp, Frank Winzeler, Edwin Ripke, David Rupp, linda H-odbeck, Ronnie Barton, Tommy Greiser, Mike Sullivan,
Sandra Schang, Leola Baer, Pauline Kellicut, Peter Short, Jerry Dominique, Tom Yoder, Paul Lovejoy, Sharon Lind-
ley, Connie Starnm, Patty Rufenacht, Joan Lisak, Nedra Kauffman, Kay Ann Cassell, Delbert Bri1sch, and Jean Eager.
At the start of the first grade there were three new students in class. They were: Carol Erbskorn, Byrdalene Wyse,
and Sharon Aschliman. There were several who moved. They were Nedra Kauffman, Mary Gerken, Jean Eager.
Sharon Greiser was killed in a bobsled-train accident. The teachers of these groups were Mrs. Agnes Whitcomb and
Mrs. Mildred Bernath. In the second grade there was one new pupil by the name of Alfred Dohm who moved in
from Elmira. Those who left were Ronny Leupp and Edwin Ripke. Our teacher was Mis. Bessie Frey.
In the third grade the new students were Bonnie Haas and Judy Nafziger. Mr. Parlette taught his pupils how to
play the flutophones. Mrs. Mary Zimmerman and Mrs. Treva Miller guided us through that year.
Our next step, grade four, found us with one less student, Joyce Rychener. Miss Mabel Nofziger and Mrs. Dorothy
Spengler led these groups over the rough way. lt was at the beginning of this year that we had classes first in the
new elementary building. Everything was bright, shiny and new.
When we reached grade five, we had two new students: Gary Baus and Ronnie Wyse, but we were minus fom'
old ones: Merle Greiser, Kenneth Graber, Kay Cassell and Pauline Kellicut. To lead our little flock, Mrs. Burk-
holder and Mis Maxine Frey did a fine job.
By this time we had reached the sixth grade. We were really big, as we were the oldest members of the ele-
mentary building. Mr. Jack Robison and Mr. Kenneth Rychener took us in hand and taught us the sixth grade
material. Marvin Miller joined this elite group, but we lost one student that year. Connie Stamm who was on a
Sunday School class picnic at Coldwater Lake accidentally drowned.
The next year found these big sixth graders toned down to little, meek, shy seventh graders entering the high
school. They seemed lost and out of place among all the high school students. During this year this class seemed
to stand still as they gained no one and lost no one.
The eighth grade found them a little acclimated to the high school. Three new ones were added to the class
roll: Bill Short, Janice Hausch, and Donovan Vorthman. Arlene Sauder left, the group.
ln September of 1955, fifty-nine green freshmen entered the ranks of Archbold High School. Twenty new stu-
dents were added to the group. They were: Sara Zaerr, leotus Amstutz, Jerry Clingaman, Lyle Fruchey, Judy Huf-
fman, Nedra Kauffman, Roger Miller, James Nicolen, Elaine Nofziger, Joyce Nofziger, Shirley Riegsecker, Gene
Roth, Lu Ann Roth, Roger Roth, Shirley Rupp, Derald Seiler, Marjorie Schanu, Donelda Sauder, Richard Waldfogel,
Shirley Weber, and Byron Wyse.
Because of the previous classes' misdemeanor this group did not need to go through the usual freshmen initiation.
This was the year when the building was enlarged and the freshmen had a big territory to roam around in.
The greenness soon wore off and by 1956 we had entered the sophomore class. During this year we chose our
class rings to be delivered when we were juniors. Two members decided to leave the QOHP. Ray Trejo quit school
to wcrk and Leola Baer quit school to get married. She was the first out of this class to enter the matrimonial
Staten
The next year was the big year for the group of studenis. A new member, Jerry I-luHman, came to be with us.
This class took on the big task of entertaining the seniors. What frm we had planning that "Garden of Friendship",
the theme of our junior-senior banquet. The Dutch garden with its windmill and tulips, the Japanese garden with
its pagoda, the Mexican garden with its pleasent place for a siesta, and the American garden with all its beauty
and comfort will always be remembered.
Two plays were presented, "Tattletale", and "Path Across the Hill" to help boon the treasmy. Football and
basketball programs were made and handed out at each game.
To climax the year, the group enjoyed a picnic at Pokagon Park in Indiana on the shores of Lake James. Ralph
Van Slyke left in finish his junior year at West Unity. Bonnie Haas left the class to get married aroimd Christmas
time, and Janice Hausch was married during the summer between the junior and senior year.
The final class was reached at last, for the fall of 1958 found us back in school as seniors. We were busy this
year for there were many things to do. Two plays were presented, "We1come Home" and "The Little Shepherd
of Kingdom Come". Both were inely produced. Shirley Weber left the class at Chrisunas time and was married.
They were entertained graciously by the juniors in the "Teahouse of Cherry Blossom Time", a beautifully
decorated Japanese eating place.
The senior trip taken from May 9 to May 15, to Washington and New York by train and boat was very enjoyable
and exciting. All the members of the class seemed like one big family.
It was hard to come back to school after this, but we had one week left. Then came the two big events of our
school career. Baccalaureate, on Sunday, May 24, came first with Rev. Kramp of St. Martin's Lutheran Church
giving the sermon.
On Tuesday, May 26, Dr. Dawson, President of Adrian College, delivered the Commencement address. The
fifty-eight remaining seniors marched up to receive their diplomas from Dr. Neal, President of the Board of Edu-
cation. Their goal had been attained and now they recieved the reward of their twelve' years of study and endeavor.
Following this the seniors walked ouf of the halls of Archbold High School, their student days Enished, to join
the ranks of alumni of Archbold High School.

Science is still moving in high gear at Archbold High School. This marked the tenth year of the Scientific
Renaissance which started in 1948 by Irwin Slesnick and has been so ably continued by George Clark, present
science instructor and Director of the Regional Quadri-County Science Fair. The usual science activities of
other years such as the Bowling Green State University Science Day, the State Science Academy, the Westing-
house Talent Search and a variety of other activities furnished an abundance of experiences for any students
who had the desire and energy needed to achieve and to excel.
The Ninth Annual Quadri-County Fair was bigger and better than ever. More schools, more projects and
better quality were features of this important event. Gail Tuttle, a Junior from Bryan High School and David
Neal were the two finalists and their projects were exhibited at the National Science Fair at Hartford, Connecti-
cut. These students, Mr. Clark, fair director, J. H. Spengler, Supt. of Schools, Dr. William J. Neal, President of
the Archbold Board of Education and Vincent Taylor and his family, representing the Archbold Buckeye, sponsors
of the local fair, were in attendance at the National event. All except the Taylor family made the trip by plane
and enjoyed it very much. The National Fair will be held at Indianapolis in 1960 and at Kansas City in 1961.
May all of this interest in science and mathematics, as well as in all areas of higher education, continue on
its present high level in future years. If it does, we need not worry 'ooo much about our young folks and about
our future.

Scholarship Awards
Good scholarship is comidered one of the most important goals of our educational system. Considerable emphasis
is placed upon a testing program which includes the Every Pupil Tests, Senior Scholarsh.ip Tests, Preliminary District
State Tests, Eighth Grade Tests, and Final District State Scholarship Tests. Several science students usually participate
in the Westinghouse Talent Search and a variety of other tests and contests in science, mathematics and English.
Archbold students have excelled in scholarship even as they have in science, music, athletics, Vocational Agri-
culture, dramatics and all other departments of the school.

The Blue Streaks experienced their worst season since the sport was revived in the fall of 1952. They
won only one game while losing seven. They' were playing some of the best teams in the area and they
were just too strong and too experienced for the Strealcs. With a good nucleus of players left over for
next years prospects look fairly good, The team will be lighter and faster.
The Streak Junior High squad, coached by Mr. Arthur, enjoyed a fine season, losing only one game
while winning five. The reserves also showed some potential. So, let's hope for better things next
year.
Michael Sullivan was chosen the most valuable player.
The following seniors were lost by graduation: Delbert Britsch, Allred Dohm, Tom Grieser, Gene
Roth, David Rupp, Derald Seiler, Mike Sullivan, Mike Wyse, Tom Yoder, Gerald Hoffman.

The Blue Streaks moved into class AA basketball this year. This came about because over 150 boys were emolled
in the high school on October 1. Regardless of class the boys enjoyed another fine season, coming through with a
15-5 record. They finished the regular season with 12 wins and 4 losses. ln tournament play they beat Swanton and
then staged a real upset no eliminate a highly favored Wauseon Indian te am. They made Van Wert their next victim
to advance to the Sectional Finals in Toledo, along with Toledo Rogers. Their next opponent was a good Toledo
Scott team that was just a trifle too good and the Streaks went down fighting by a score of 70 to 62.
Bob Fraas, Denny Miller, Ken Nagel, Mike Sullivan, Dean Rupp, James Fiser and Dean Beck were the regulars who
saw most of the varsity service. Since the squad listed only three seniors prospects look good for another fine team
next year. Mike Sullivan, Dean Rupp, and Tom Grieser are the seniors who will be missing.
Bob Fraas led the team in scoring and Kenneth Nagel had the best foul shooting percentage.

The Archbold Blue Streak Baseball team was a very young one. Most of the players were ex Pony
Leaguers. Most of the pinching was done by Gene Bridges and Roger Hall. A lack of timely hitting,
along with some shaky fielding cost the Streals several close games. They won 5 and lost 7. In view
of their inexperience this is not a poor record, With a team of young players all to be back next year,
they will make their presence felt in the future.

Dr. Ralph O. Rychener
Dr. Ralph O. Rychener, an alumnus of Archbold High School, and
now a successful surgeon in Memphis, Tennessee, who has long been
noted for his very generous moral and financial support of all athletic
and other activities in our school, in 1946 established an athletic award
of one hundred dollars cash to be awarded to a selected senior boy.
This scholarship was named in honor of Dr. Rychener's parents, Mr.
and Mrs. N. J. Rychener, local residents, who always displayed a keen
interest in Archbold school affairs.
The award is made on the following basis. Thirty per cent,
Athletic Ability, thirty per cent, Scholarship, twenty per cent, Neatness
and Personal Appearance, twenty per cent, General School Attitude.
In 1952 a revision was made in the award maldng the cash payment
only if the winner goes on to college. Another provision also requires
that all eligible participants must have an average of B or better in
English. If the winner does not go to college the award will be held
in escrow for the next year.
The winner of the award is selected by members of the high school Athletic Staff.
Former Rychener Award winners were: Aden Storrer, 19465 Gerald Lehman, 19475 Paul Sigg, 19485
