DEDICATIO
ARTHUR TAYLOR EARL BOURQUIN
'Q
The Senior Class of 1958 takes great pride in dedicating the 1958 edition of the
Blue Streak to its two faithful custodians, Earl Bourquin and Arthur Taylor. These two
men have given long and faithful service in keeping our school rooms clean and warm
and comfortable at all times. Perhaps they haven't been able to satisfy everybody
quite all of the time, but for the most part they have done their work well and have
provided the best possible environment in which the pupils of our schools have been
able to work to their fullest ability. Their efforts are greatly appreciated by all of us.

Unusual achievements in science have come to be a regular part of the activities pursued at Archbold High
School. 1957-1958 proved to be another banner year for the Science Departments and for the Quadri -County
Science Fair. As in past years the presence of Archbold projects at the Bowling Green District Fair and the
State Academy of Science Day, were very much in evidence. A goodly number of Superior and Excellent ratings
were added to a very impressive list from other years.
The Eighth Annual Quadri -County Science Fair was an outstanding event. More schools participated, more
projects were entered and the general quality of work continued to show improvement over past years.
Kriss Stutzman, along with Bernadine Beck and Bud Stuckey in a dual project were judged to be the grand
champions of the 1958 event.
Their projects were exhibited in the National Science Fair held at Flint, Michigan. These Archbold students,
accompanied by Mr. Clark, their instructor and director of the local fair, spent a very enjoyable four days at
the fair. Since the fair was near home this year quite a number of folks from this area journeyed to Flint to en-
joy the event.
Kriss Stutzman continued his outstanding work in science and achieved Honorable Mention in the Westing-
house Talent Search Contest.
John Rich served as president of the Science Club. He and his Staff did another outstanding job in planning
and presenting the eighth science fair.
In this year of Sputnik and all the ado about space travel and its resultant criticism of American Education,
it is interesting to recall, that it is nine years ago since Archbold High School started an accelerated science and
mathematics program, long before the world knew about Sputnik.
There is no reason to feel that the high plane of achievement in Science will not continue in Archbold High
School for many years in the future.

Scholarship Awards
Good scholarship is considered one of the most important goals of our educational system. Considerable
emphasis is placed upon a testing program which includes the Every Pupil Tests, Senior Scholarship Tests, Pre-
liminary District State Tests, Eighth Grade Tests, and Final District State Scholarship Tests. Several Science
students annually participate in the Westinghouse Talent Search and other science and related tests.
Archbold students have excelled in scholarship even as they have in science, music, athletics, dramatics, and
all other departments of the school.

The Archbold High School Band enjoyed a fine year of many successful endeavors. The Marching Band
did an excellent job during the football season. They also made the usual number of Community appear-
ances during the year, always being available when their services were needed.
For the sixth consecutive year they won a Superior rating in State Competition. They were perhaps the
youngest band ever to achieve this honor. There were only four seniors listed on the roster, along with a
very large number of Junior High and Elementary members.
George Borich again directed the band and did an excellent job in continuing the high type of achieve-
ment which has become a part of local band tradition.

The Blue Streaks enjoyed another one of their traditionally fine basketball years. They won 18 games and
lost 5. They won the county tournament in easy fashion and advanced to the District finals where they lost to
the Ridgeville Falcons in a close, hard-fought battle by a score of 57 to 55. They twice conquered the Wauseon
Indians, and beat Deshler, rated second in the state, by a 18-54 score. Their 5 losses came by a total of 20
points.
Bob Bridges, Victor Miller, Gary Myersand, Bob Fraas carried the scoring burden in most of the games. Mike
Sullivan had numerous good games also. Bridges averaged just under 20 points per game.
A good reserve team, a Freshman team with a 14-3 record, and a Junior High team with a 9-3 record indicate
good material for the future. Mike Sullivan, Bob Fraas and Denny Miller will be the nucleus for next year's
team.
Bob Bridges, Victor Miller, Gerald Myers, John Rich, Leland Wyse, John Rupp and Donald Frey are the grad-
uating seniors.
Bob Bridges led the team in scoring and had the best foul shooting percentage.

The Blue Streaks compiled a record of three wins and five losses in their 1957 season. They played a very
tough schedule of experienced football teams. In most of the games the Streaks made a very creditable showing.
The Wauseon Indians were held scoreless until the final minutes of the game and Liberty Center came from be-
hind in the second half for their win.
Coach Michael Walker experienced his first season as a varsity coach, assisted by Thomas Vitello. Ben Londeree
coached the Junior High team.
The Streak reserves enjoyed a good season as did the junior high boys, so prospects look fairly good for the
future .
The following seniors were lost by graduation: Bill DeGroff, Gary Myers, Rex Ziegler, Bob Grisier, Don Clair,
Bob Miller, Herbert Ruffer and David Holsopple.
Bill DeGroff was chosen the most valuable player.

The Blue Streaks enjoyed another fine baseball season. They won ten games and lost only three. They won the
Fulton County championship and reached the Sectional finals before bowing out of competition. Bob Bridges did
most of the pitching and continued his fine work of the past two seasons. The team was made up mostly of '
Sophomores. Their hitting was not too strong and their fielding was weak at times, otherwise this team could
have gone a long ways.
Gary Myers at first base and Rex Ziegler, pitcher, along with Bob Bridges were the only seniors on the squad,
so a very good nucleus remains for next years team. Mike Sullivan will be back to do the catching, along with
Terry Murbach. Bob Fraas shows promise as a pitcher, along with two Freshmen, Gene Bridges and Roger Hall.

The 1958 Track team enjoyed a very successful season. They lived up to the promise they showed as Fresh-
men. Had the team been stronger in the field events they would have been much better, for they really excelled
in the track events. John Jimenez, and Bill DeGroff were very good in the distance runs. John placed fifth in the
District in the mile run. James Fiser did very well in the 440 and the high jump. Merle Beck tied for second in
the District high jump. Archbold's mile relay team tied for fourth place in the District. Other outstanding per-
formers for the Streaks were Everardo Santos, Dean Beck, John Rich, Bob Fraas, Bob Grisier, Mike Sullivan, Herb
Ruffer and John Rupp. Most of the big point winners will be back next year, so the Streaks should enjoy another fine
season on the cinder paths next year.
The Streaks placed second in the Fulton County Meet behind a strong Delta team, which later tied with Blue
Creek for the District title.

The 1958 golf squad was composed almost entirely of Sophomores. They all showed considerable improvement
over their Freshman year. They won only one match in six attempts against some rather rugged competition. They
also participated in the District meet at Valleywood -Swanton and the Montpelier Invitational.
Golf is a game unlike most other sports. The boys enjoy playing and it is more fun to win than lose, but it
doesn't seem to be such an important factor as it is in most other sports. It is a game of individual effort and desire
and the only limitation seems to be the amount of time and effort that can be devoted to improve one's game.
One of the high lights of the season was a match with a faculty team, which was won by the . . . by a score
of . . . to . . .
The boys are all looking forward to the next two years when they expect to be on the winning side more
frequently.

Wrestling, a brand new sport, so far as the high school was concerned, made its appearance on the sports
calendar this year. Coach Michael Walker was interested in the sport and succeeded in interesting about a dozen
boys who made up Archbo1d's first wrestling squad.
The squad listed only two seniors, Bill DeGroff and Herbert Ruffer. Others who saw action were Tom Yoder,
Roger Roth, Gene Roth, Byron Wyse, Pete Short, Alfred Dohm, David Neal, Terry Murbaeh, David Miller and
John Jimenez.
The team engaged in four matches. They won twice from Montpelier, 27 to 14, and 19 to 16. They downed
Napoleon in a close match 25 to 20. They lost to Maumee Valley Country Day 25 to 22 in an extended match. The
Streaks were ahead 22 to 20 at the regulation finish.
The team will go into a big time schedule next year when they engage some of the top teams in this area in
12 matches staged on a home and home basis.

Rychener Award
Dr. Ralph O. Rychener, an Alumnus of Archbold High School, and
now a successful surgeon in Memphis, Tennessee, who has long been
noted for his very generous moral and financial support of all
athletic and other activities in our school, in 1946 established an
Athletic Award of one hundred dollars cash to be awarded to a
selected Senior boy. This scholarship was named in honor of Dr.
Rychener's parents, Mr. and Mrs. N. J. Rychener, local residents, who
always displayed a keen interest in Archbold school affairs.
The award is made on the following basis. Thirty per cent,
1 Athletic Ability, thirty per cent, Scholarship, twenty per cent, Neat-
ness and Personal Appearance, twenty per cent, General School At-
Dr. Ralph O. Rychener titude. In 1952 a revision was made in the award making the cash
payment only if the winner goes on to college. If he does not continue
his education beyond high school he will receive an emblem instead of
the cash award. Another new provision states that he must have an
average of "B" or better in all of his English courses. If the one selected for the award does not use it by
going on to college it will be held in escrow for the next year. The winner of the award is selected by
the members of the high school Athletic Staff.
Former Rychener Award Winners were: Aden Storrer, 1946g Gerald Lehman, 1947g Paul Sigg, 1948g
Arthur Kleck, 19493 John Clair, 1950, Dale Leu, 195lg Ralph Burkhmdery 1952, Paul Yoder, 19535 Andrew
Murbach, 1954, Robert Kleck, 1955, Wilmer Dean Rupp, 1956 and William Palmer, 1957.
