Gunther and Mrs. Goat follow K. Gunnings sight translation of Vergil's Aeneid. 20 wiv' ' Sr. Paulita recounts her experiences while in France to K. Reilly and P. Golda, while S. Saunders and D. Trynosky read the French literature she brought from France. The Language Department at Walsh prepares the student forthe world wide communications through the offered pro- grams of Latin, French, and Spanish. Latin introduces the student to the classical civilizations. The novice encounters basic vocabulary and grammar. Back- ground material on the ancient Roman culture is supplied in the form of translation passages. Second year translations consist of the writings of Julius Caesar. The third and fourth courses cover the finer points of syntax, the poetry of Vergil, or the orations of Cicero. Two methods of teaching French are used at Walsh, the traditional and the audio-visual system. The traditional meth- od follows a text. The audio-visual series, Voix et Images, uses everyday conversations to familiarize the student with idio- matic expressions employed in spoken French. Spanish is a link between the United States and her neigh- bors to the South. Better relations can be formed by the re- moval ofthe language barrier. Through a four year course in Spanish, the Walsh student acquires the ability to converse in this language.
