There's not a joy the world can give like that it takes away
When the glow of early thought declines in feeling,s dull decay
George Gordon, Lord Byron
Youth and Age
Fly envious time, till thou run out thy race
Call on the lazy leaden-stepping hours,
Whose speed is but the heavy Plummet's pace
And glut thyself with what thy womb devours,
Which is no more than what is false and vain,
And merely mortal drossg
So little is our loss,
So little is thy gain.
John Milton

A view of the main altar in the Stepinac chapel.
Be thou then, 0 thou dear
Mother, my atmosphere,
My happier world, wherein
To wend and meet no sing
Above me, round me lie
Fronting my froward eye
With sweet and scarless sky,
Stir in my ears, speak there
Of Godas love, 0 live air,
Of patience, penance, prayer:
World-mothering air, air wild,
Wound with thee, in thee isled,
Fold home, fast -fold thy child.
The Blessed Virgin compared to the air
we Breathe.
Gerard Manley Hopkins
Lo, upon the altar lies,
Hidden deep from human eyes,
Bread of angels from the skies,
Made the food of mortal man:

Stepinac secondary breaks up a Huguenot pass play.
The fighting Crusaders opened their l966
season on the New Rochelle gridiron, against
a highly favored Huguenot team. The first
thirty minutes provided the deciding factor,
as the Purple Wave exploded for three long
touchdown plays. Meanwhile, the Stepinac of-
fense, not being able to find the scoring com-
bination, trailed l9-O when the first half
ended. However, the third period saw a resur-
gent Crusader defense that repeatedly stalled
New Rochelle drives. They also snared the
fumble which was later turned into a touch-
down on a Tom Lee pass to Rich Kelly. The
effort fell short as the Huguenots, coming
back for another score in the latter part of the
period, went on to hold their lead, and won,
25-7.

The revival of the WPIX "Game of the
Week" was a muddy contest, played in
a continuous downpour of rain, The Ter-
riers of St. Francis mounted a strong run-
ning attack which put them in control
of the game. Midway through the first
quarter, with St. Francis in possession on
the Stepinac 37, Don Salierno penetrated
the Terrier offensive line, dumping the
quarterback who was attempting to
throw. The intended pass fell into the
arms of Dennis Egan, who travelled 63
yards for the Stepinac score.
Later, in the final quarter, Tom Lee
on a fake punt passed to Bob Santangelo,
who scampered 53 yards past the St.
Francis defenders for Stepinac' second
score. The combination of the rain and
the running of Richie Szaro who scored
all his team's points, was too much for
the Crusaders as they fell by a 26-12
score.

Don Salierno drags down the Iona quarterback behind the line.
The true potential of the Crusaders
manifested itself as they ripped Iona
by the very convincing score of 40-O.
Fine ball carrying by the Stepinac
backs, Steve Owen, Ray Turnbull, Bob
Dickinson, as well as by junior Richard
Belfatto, who scored twice, provided
five touchdowns. The other score came
on a 40 yard jaunt by Ray Gort follow-
ing a blocked Gael punt.
The defense provided key plays:
interceptions by Rich Belfatto and
Brian Flood, a fumble recovery by
Dennis Egan, and a blocked punt. All
were turned into scores. An intercep-
tion by Frank Spiegel might have been
turned into another score but time ran
out with the offense poised on the
Iona two-yard line. The Stepinac de-
fense kept the lona offense bottled up
throughout the game.
The Stepinac squeeze play.
Tom Lee heaves a pass into the flat
After enjoying a fourteen point lead at halftime, the
Crusaders were forced to accept a 14-14 tie, as Spellman
mounted a strong comeback and struck back with two touch-
downs in the second half.
The first Stepinac score came on a 72 yard romp by Rich
Belfatto as he broke away from a swarm of defenders at the
line. Later in the first half, Bob Santangelo intercepted a pass
on-the Spellman 34 and returned it to the 13. When a holding
penalty stalled the drive, Tom Lee passed to Belfatto who
carried it to the two. On third down Lee knifed across for
the score. Brian Flood ran around end for the conversion.
The second half was marked by a resurgence on the part
of Spellman. The Pilots, though meeting stiff resistance
from a tough defensive line led by Don Salierno and Bob
Dickinson, still managed to score twice. The final conversion
was stopped and the game ended in a 14-14 stalemate.

Bull Henry Iunges for loose pigsikin.
Determined to offset the previous week's
tie with Cardinal Spellman, the Crusaders
roared onto the field and rolled up 24 points
in the process of shutting out the outclassed
Mounfies. Stepinac began the scoring in the
first quarter, after a Mount punt rolled dead
at the visitors' 39 yard line. On the first play
from scrimmage, Bob Santangelo circled end
on a reverse and covered the distance for a
touchdown, with Belfatto plunging in for the
conversion. Another score came when Bill
Henry intercepted a blocked pass and rambled
l3 yards untouched to the end zone.
At halftime the Crusaders enjoyed a 16-O
bulge and carried it through most of the sec-
ond half before good fortune smiled again on
Stepinac's gridders. A "roughing the kicker"
penalty gave them the ball and a first down
on the Mount 45 yard line. Corning off the
bench, after seeing limited action, Brian Flood
took the, ball and immediately raced 45 yards
for the closing score, which was followed by a
conversion. The defensive unit played inspired
football throughout thereby forcing Mount
mistakes which were capitalized on by the
offense. Stalwarts who deserved a good part
of credit for the victory included Don Salierno,
Frank Sniadack, Bill Henry, Bob Dickinson,
Dennis Meehan, Tony Aulenti, and Bob
Siebert.

After a refreshing 24-O conquest of
the Mount the previous week, the
Crusaders journeyed to Mineola, Long "4
Island to meet Chaminade High's
Flyers. When the final gun sounded,
Chaminade was on top by a I4-O score.
The game opened with a Chaminade
fumble on the opening kickoff, which
the Crusaders recovered on their own
49 yard line. With the aid of Bob
Santangelo, the Crusaders marched to
the Chaminade two, but here the drive
faltered. We were foced to surrender
the ball on downs. With Chaminade
taking over, the defenses jelled, hold-
ing the score O-O at the half. Chamin-
ade came to life in the third quarter
when they drove SO yards for the initial
score.
The Flyers soon after drove to the
Stepinac five, but a tough Stepinac
defense held them. Chaminade inter- N
cepted a Lee pass,,and turned it into
a touchdown four plays later. This left
the score l4-O, the winning margin
when the game ended.

John Soricelli tries to skirt past Cross defenders.
Playing host to the Knights of Holy Cross,
Stepinac was checked 28-O in an attempt to
upset the defending Catholic High School
League champions. The Knights, hitting on
two touchdown passes, ground out another in
the second quarter to build a Zi-O lead at
halftime. All Stepinac scoring threats proved
futile in the first half. After Bob Santangelo
returned a kickoff to the Holy Cross 45 yard
line, the Crusaders started moving on a Lee
pass and short runs which carried them to
their opponent's 20, but two incomplete
passes, coupled with two broken plays, forced
them to give the ball up on downs. Later in
the quarter, Bill Henry recovered a fumble
on the Stepinac I8 yard stripe. Rich Belfatto
ran for l5 yards, followed by a 34 yard aerial
to him from Lee. Then, on the next play, a
Knight defender intercepted to foil another
drive.
The second half, by contrast, was a stale-
mate until a Holy Cross back slipped away
for a 56 yard touchdown run in the last period.
Yet the Crusader offense, which ran more
plays than Holy Cross, failed to put it all
together which made for a disappointing
afternoon.

The beginning of the end . . ."
The closing of the i966 season for
Stepinac came against Cardinal Hayes
for the coveted Bishop DuBois trophy,
which is awarded annually to the
winner of this fall contest. The open-
ing minutes of the game looked bright
for the Crusaders as they marched
down the field with the initial kickoff.
The drive started with a 34 yard pass
completion from Tom Lee to Rich
Kelly, and moved to the Hayes two
yard line before a fumble stalled the
attack. However, Cardinal Hayes, by
the same mistake, fumbled back on
the next play, and the Crusaders did
not fail to take advantage. Only sec-

Ted O'Donnell, Jim Schindler, Nick Ford, Paul Petraglia, Coach
Krebs, Don Boland, Jim Lonergan, Bob Curran
The pre season outlook was very bright for the
Stepinac Harriers as they took to the hills of Van
Cortlandt Park once again this year. Returning from
last year's highly successful varsity were seniors Jed
Dobson, Nick Ford, Don Boland, and junior Jim
Schindler. Coach Bill Krebs was predicting great
things for his squad as they opened their season with
successive dual meets against Hayes, Sacred Heart
and White Plains
Although the Crusaders found themselves on the
short end of each of the dual meets Mr. Krebs
watched hopefully as his team began to form around
the running of Jim Schindler. Running smoothly over
the two and a half mile course, Schindler was timed
in l3:34 while competing in the White Plains Meet.
Following him across the finish line, were Nick Ford,
newcomer Paul Petraglia, Bob Curran, Jed Dobson,
and sophomore sensation Jim Lonergan.

produced the biggest surprise as Schindler, pitted
against the top runners in Westchester County, fin-
ished first, covering the course in l3:O9. Spirit was
high as the Harriers took to the hills for the annual
N.Y.U. Meet the following week. Once again it was
Schindler pacing the team with a clocking of l3:26,
the second fastest time for the course in Stepinac
history. Finishing l3th in team totals, the squad also
benefitted from the strong running of Bob Curran,
l4:l8, and Paul Petraglia, l4:2O.
On Columbus Day, Stepinac competed in the Iona
Meet. The tremendous efforts of Schindler and Nick
Ford netted sixth place. The Westchester Coaches'
Meet, which perhaps is one of the toughest meets on
the East Coast, was next on the schedule for Stepinac's
thinclads. Schindler finished l6th, closely pursued by
Jed Dobson and Petraglia. The squad came in 5th
over a tough field of thirty schools.

Led by Schindler in 6th place l3:39, and Ford in l3th
place l3:53, the team lwith a strong running by the
rest of its members? came in third behind Power
Memorial and St. Peter's. A jubilant Coach Krebs
then led his squad into the final and most glorious
meet of the year, the Catholic High School Charn-
pionships. Over a field of 40 schools, the Crusaders
finished in second place. Once again, Jim Schindler
topped the team with a tremendous clocking of 13:15,
just four seconds off the school record. Not to go
unnoticed was the great running of Bob Curran who
finished l8th in l3:36. Mr, Krebs was also very
proud of the strong showing of Paul Petraglia, Nick
Ford, and especially sophomore Jim Lonergan who
was the key to the entire victory.
At the end of the Cross Country season Jim
Schindler was honored with a place on both the All-
County and All-Catholic Cross Country teams. lt was
a fitting end to an outstanding season.

The highlight of the season was the Catholic High
School Sectionals. Stepinac won the Sectionals, its
fourth such victory in the past seven years. Tom Pur-
cell jumped 6'2Vs" to set a new school and meet
record. Pat Tucci l6O yard dash 5.8l, Baldwin Hurns
l6O yard high hurdles 8.0l, and Rich McGovern l440
yard run 5l.8l, all placed second. More second places
came from the 880 junior relay of Jim Buchignano,
Rich Callarco, Paul Lock, Mike Benziger, and the two
mile relay of Tom Groark l2:06l, Nick Ford l2:02l,
Rich D'Angiolillo l2:04l, and Bob Curran l2:06l.
Also scoring were Jim Schindler in a 9:50 two mile
rung Rich Castalito, Peter Cotter, Rich Donahue, Ed
Pomponi in the 880 relay, Art Scheid, Kev Noonan,
Bob Galiskis, and Jerry Vogel in the mile relay.
ln the Catholics, at Madison Square Garden,
Baldwin Hurns placing 5th came very close to the
school record for the 60 yard high hurdles, with a
7.9. The six lap relay of Art Scheid, Kev Noonan, Eric
Clark and Tom Nasca came in fourth, to miss a medal
by .l second. The strong junior six lap relay of Jim
Buchignano, Rich Callarco, Paul Lock, and Jerry Vogel
placed second.
Special mention must be given to Rich McGovern,
whose excellent and consistent performances have
made him a top Stepinac runner. His 5l .8 in the 440
came within a few tenths of a second of the school
record, and he has always been a strong support to
the mile relay. Jim Schindler and Eric Clark have also
been solid competitors throughout the season. But it
is the team that wins meets, and all the members
deserve credit.
A vigilant coach, Mr. Bill Krebs, led the team
throughout the rewarding indoor season, a season of
which Stepinac is indeed proud.
After capturing second place in the Catholic High
School Cross Country Championships, the track team
went on to complete a tremendously successful
indoor season. During the season most of the meets
were held in the l68th Street Armory. The rugged
Crusaders practiced outside on the board track, which
they often had to clear of snow, and triumph was the
result of such effort by Stepinac's dedicated runners.
The Relay Carnival started the season off with an
outstanding performance by all the team. A total of
l9 medals was collected for the day's work. The high
hurdle shuttle record for Stepinac was broken by
seniors Tom Nasca, Jim Jangl, and Baldwin Hurns,
who placed second with a magnificent 24.2. ln the
sprint medley relay Rich McGovern, Art Scheid, Mike
Hortens, and Eric Clark placed second, as did Joe
Bruno, Peter Shea, John Jazensky, and Jim Buchig-
nano in the novice 880 relayg in the novice 2 mile
relay Jim Lonegan, Rich Donahue, Rich Callarco, and
Ted O'Donnell placed second. Furthermore, at the
Carnival, O'Donnell, a sophomore, ran an impressive
2108.8 and the distance medleys of Bob Curran
l2:05l, Kev Noonan l52.8l, Rich Castalito l25.0l,
and Jim Schindler l4:35l, came in fourth.
ln the Loughlin Games, the mile relay of Rich
McGovern, Baldwin Hurns, Kev Noonan, and Eric
Clark, placed third in 3:29.6.
After overpowering Mount Saint Michael 62-25,
Stepinac broke its l9 dual-meet winning streak. ln
the team's first dual meet loss since l96l, St. Helena
edged out Stepinac by a close 57-52. Nonetheless,
Stepinac started all over with an outstanding victory
over New Rochelle 53-43, as Pat Tucci turned in a
fast 4.8 to win the 40 yard dash.
Again the strong mile relay came through with a
3:29.l to take second place in the Cardinal Hayes
Games. Junior Jim Schindler, the cross-country star,
ran 9:45 for two miles, placing fourth.

The l966-67 edition of the Stepinac varsity bas-
ketball team opened its season with a spirited victory
over the Xavier cadets with Tim Beach and Artie
White leading the offensive attack. The following
engagement was against the perennial powerhouse,
St. Helena's of the Bronx. With the sharpshooting
of Tim Beach and the playmaking of Jim Klar, the
Bronxites were felled. The third game of the season
was another home encounter with Mount St. Michael.
Four starters scored in double figures and with Tom
Purcell pulling down Zl rebounds, the Crusaders dis-
posed of the Mounties handily. The first away game
saw Cardinal Hayes host the Crusaders. Opening up
a l9-point half-time advantage, they proceeded to
coast home behind Patsy Capalongo's fine shooting
and the rebounding of Tom Purcell.
The second annual meeting between White Plains
and Stepinac saw the Plainsmen defeat our men in a
thrilling encounter in which the Crusaders led at half-
time by four points. However in this game, talented
junior Artie White came into his own by scoring 28
points.
The next two contests occurred during the New
Rochelle High School Christmas Tournament. With
a 50 point second half, the Crusaders bombarded New
Rochelle in the first round. The championship round
two nights later proved to be a disappointing loss as
Yonkers Central prevailed in an ill-fated overtime
duel. Yet, for the second year in a row, a Stepinac
player won the coveted MVP award for the two-day
tournament, junior Artie White. As the new year
beckoned, the Crusaders sported a 5-2 seasonal ledger.
The return to school saw the Stepinac varsity
journey to the homecourt of the Mount Vernon Pur-
ple Knights. The fast-breaking Knights made Stepinac
their seventh seasonal victim. The following game
saw a return to the home boards for the Crusaders.
Taking on rugged Power Memorial, the Crusaders,
leading most of the way, faltered when Tom Purcell
and Patsy Capalongo fouled out and dropped a heart-
breaking decision. Timmy Beach led the valiant home
cause with 20 points. ln the next game our men
turned a tight contest into an overwhelming victory
with an explosive final half against Cardinal Spellman.
Two juniors, Art White and John Belmont led the
offensive onslaught, Then Friday, January 13, proved
to be just that, as the cold-shooting Crusaders never
got on track and dropped a close game to Xavier. The
next game saw Artie White, Tom Purcell and Jimmy
Klar lead a rejuvenated attack which buried St. Hel-
ena's. Shortly thereafter, the Crusaders promptly
coasted to an easy win over New Rochelle after a
46-22 half-time advantage, Tom Purcell had a hot
hand with 2l points and 22 rebounds.
The mid-year vacation proved to be no blessing,
as both Artie White and Jimmy Klar were lost to the
team for the remainder of the season. Hit by the loss
of these key players, the team looked listless as it ab-
sorbed a ruthless shellacking from Mount St. Michael.
Only Patsy Capalongo played well as he netted 27
points. The following contest proved to be a complete
reversal as the visitors from Cardinal Hayes were the
ones shellacked as they took it on the chin in a game
in which the Crusaders nearly doubled their score.
February lO was the last home game of the year in
which Jerry Quinlan and John Belmont sparked the
Crusaders to a comfortable victory over the visitors
from Cardinal Spellman. The final regular season
match saw the Crusaders journey to New York to face
Power Memorial. The outcome was never in doubt
as Power scored 52 points in the second half to hand
our men a harsh drubbing.
Thus the Crusaders finished the regular season
with a lO-7 overall and 8-4 league record to capture
third place in Division l in the formidable CHSAA.

As has -been the custom tor a good many
years, the seniors received the opportunity
to go away on a closed retreat. Retreats were
made by about 40 boys in each of the four
houses. Gonzaga, St. Ignatius, Loyola, and
Manresa, all Jesuit retreat houses, wel-
comed the students on February 27, and
finished the retreats on March 2. Many of
the seniors have wholeheartedly agreed that
it was a worthwhile experience.
This year a new program was instituted
to improve the participation in the missions.
The New York Archdiocese assigned Step-
inac a South American village called Es-
meraldas. The proceeds from each collec-
tion went there directly instead of being
divided up by the Society for the Propa-
gation ot the Faith. Thus the student body
ot Stepinac helped this poverty-stricken
village directly and received periodic prog-
ress reports about the town.

of the cast, the crew and their tireless Direc-

successful dramatic endeavor in Stepinac's
history.
ARSENIC AND OLD LACE is a farce written
by Joseph Kesselring. The action takes place
in the Brewster home in Brooklyn, during the

LITTLE MARY SUNSHINE is a light satire on
the old-time Operettas that only those of another
generation would remember. lt is the story of a
petite young maiden, Mary Sunshine lCathy
Kennedyl, who runs an inn in the wild Rocky
Mountains of Colorado. Here, under the protec-
tion of her Indian foster father, Chief Brown Bear
lMark Varianl, she is able to entertain her many
prominent guests. At this time, a bevy ot young
ladies from Eastchester Finishing School are stay-
ing at the inn. They naturally become infatuated
with the U.S. Forest Rangers, who are there on a
secret mission. The fearless leader of the Forest
Rangers, Captain "Big Jim" Warington lFred
Bossel, falls madly in love with little Mary, and
"Breeze deep."
"We've marched from the
Canadian Border to the
Mexican Border and hack,"
"Swinging, Swinging, up in the air we are wingingf'
Billy Jester lCarl Borgattil, the humble Corporal
of the outfit, reluctantly falls in love with Miss
Mary's maid, Nancy Twinkle lPatty Koeglerl.
One rather unexpected guest arrives on the
scene later in the play. General Oscar Fairfax
lThomas Murphyl , comes to bring news about the
suit Brown Bear had brought against Congress,
and he proceeds to fall in love with all the girls,
including Madam Ernestine von Liebedich tDiedre
Kellyl, a retired opera singer.
The breathtaking climax comes when our
hero, Big Jim, with the aid of his able-bodied
guide, Fleet Foot lRalph Jannettil, finds and
overpowers the villain, Yellow Feather lPerry
Crawfordl 3 and everyone lives happily ever after.

CLUB
Mary Sinnott, President of
the Good Counsel Peg-Os,
presents her rendition of the
"Birthday of a King".
The spirit of Christmas is illustrated by the stage settings.
Over the past two years the Stepinac Glee Club has been expanded to
a year-round activity, During the l966-67 season, in addition to their
performances in the Christmas and Spring Concerts, the combined voices
of the men ot Stepinac and the young ladies of Good Counsel Academy have
been heard in many hospitals and nursing homes throughout the area.
An ensemble of 25 young men and women from the Glee Club were
given the privilege of singing in the Capella Memorial Concert at the West-
chester County Center.
Stepinac is proud of the fine record the Glee Club has established
under the firm direction of Msgr. MCG-ann.
Lincoln Center Student Award win-
ners, Mark Varian and Ed Mascari
are shown here with Msgr. McGann.
The award is given to those who are
enthusiastic and interested in the arts.
Students discuss the game at a Post-Football mixer.
DANCE
COMMITTEE
In order to have successful social events, a school must
have a group of people willing to work behind the scenes,
decorating and making all necessary arrangements. This
detail is well carried out by the Stepinac Dance Committee.
The members of this group, with the aid of their moder-
ator, Fr. Reynolds, have provided School dances with top
bands and appropriate decorations.
A subsidiary of the Dance Committee, the Senior Mixer
Committee, has also provided the student body with a
good number of post-game dances throughout the year.
Besides being a means to promote student participation
and school spirit, these mixers also proved to be a finan-
cial success. The Sl ,25O, that was earned by these events
will go toward the Senior Dinner Dance expenses.
The Bands . . .
Mixer committee awards proceeds to the school.
. . . and the students provide all the entertainment necessary for
having a good time at the post-game mixers.

Mr. Gardner Mr. Elia
Through the efforts of Msgr. McGann and his assistants, Mr.
Gardner and Mr. Elia, the sight and sounds of a marching band
were revived this year at Stepinac. The absence of a band for the
past two years has been a definite detraction from the spirit of the
student body. However, in l966, the inspiring rythm of a marching
band, as well as a small concert band were heard once again on the
fields of competition and in the school assemblies. The Class of
I967 is proud to welcome back an organization that is so essential
to the spirit of Stepinac.
Members of the band: Front Row: N. Rodriquez, W. DePena, M. Kozlow, A. Jacobine, M
Yazurlo, P. Cancro, G. Ford, R. Castelli, Msgr. McGann. Second Row: J. Cipriano, J. Russo
J. Maiello, D. Caracelo, K. Beckley, R. Frascone, A. O'Sullivan, A. Meloni, V. Balls. Back Row
M. Manna, T. Casey, W. Harrison, V. Cartelli, J. Ryan, F. Ciniglia, B. Benson, A. Romcino
V. LoGuidice, R. Erenzo, J. Ficaretta.

Auditions for the band
were held in Septem-

people were admitted
