The Crusaders opened their '64 season
against Westchester's leading public
school, New Rochelle. Stepinac was
picked to be the underdog in this highly
publicized game, ancl, much to the dis-
appointment of the team, the experts
proved to be right.
The fine running offensive of the New
Rochelle team dominated the game. The
only Stepinac score came when Gino
Partenza hit John Schneider with a thirty-
yard pass. Bill Darrow played a fine game,
even though for a losing cause. To add
greater pain to Coach Sullivan, the game
sidelined Partenza for the major part of
the season.

Pre-game strategy discussion.
lt is obvious that Stepinac's defensive
line should not be judged by the score
in the Mount game, 24-6. On the
ground the Mounties gained only thirty-
one yards. Stepinac's pass defense
proved to be its vulnerable spot. A
quick pass in the first quarter gave the
Mount a 6-O lead. As half-time ap-
proached, another pass completion and
an interception accounted for the l8-O
score.
After an early fourth period score by
the Mount, Stepinac sent Wernert in
for a score from the two, to complete a
seventy-yard drive. This completed the
scoring in Stepinac's first CHSAA loss.

Stepinac travelled to the Bronx to face our third seasonal loss
at the hands of the Spellman eleven. The red and blue were never
in real contention, and the game resulted in Spellman's first Varsity
victory, an impressive l4-6 triumph.
Stepinac worked in Spellman territory for the entire first half,
but failed to score. Three times we drove within the twenty-yard
line, only to fumble. Joe Salierno played particularly well, and
demonstrated his ability in the line-backer spot by diagnosing many
Spellman plays. Spellman scored its first touchdown late in the
third quarter, and our final drive was stopped by a stunning Spellman
interception and a ninety-five yard return.
The final score was 14-O.
Gang tackle creates pile-up.
This game opened on an
optimistic note which pre-
vailed until the final whistle.
Deep man Ed Porcelli, taking
the opening kickoff, sped
around the right side to find
daylight and, within a matter
of seconds, 6 points. The
game saw the reserves used
extensively. With halfbacks
Nix and Northcutt sidelined
for the greater part of the
game, the line worked for a
new set of backs who han-
dled themselves more than
capably. Junior Bob Finne-
ran played superbly until he
was removed with a leg in-
jury. The rest of the game
can be summarized in two
words-Paul Baviello. This
hard-working halfback bar-
relled straight up the center
of the line for the rest of the
afternoon to gain the re-
maining Crusader points.
Overjoyed team celebrates first victory.

Touchdown-Stepinac
Presentation of the trophy to the victor
For the better part of the last ten years,
through good season and bad, Stepinac's
varsity has been able to provide a home for
the Dubois Trophy. The trophy is given to
the victor of the annual clash with Hayes.
Last year we retained possession as we played
Hayes to a 6-6 draw. This year we again
provided a welcome home for the prize with
a similar score of 6-6.
The lone Crusader tally was produced by
quarterback Ed Porcelli on an end sweep,
Final statistics also showed Porcelli as the
team's leading ground gainer.
Crusaders dive for a fumble
The Holy Cross game proved to be
the year's most baffling. Neither team
possessed a good record but the Pilots
were given the upper edge. Stepinac
handed their opponents a 28-6 defeat.
The game starred a iunior, Rich
Wernert. His first touchdown came by
way of a 65 yard run. He later grabbed
a pass and carried the ball for fifty
yards and 6 pointsf
Gary Ritter, playing end, caught an-
other Porcelli pass and managed to
score.
A fine defense held the Cross score-
less until the final moments when a
substitute squad allowed the Pilots an-
other 6 points.
Wernert breaks away.
Wernert pulls in a pass for yardage
Ritter goes Over the line.
The Encounter with St. Francis on our
home field was perhaps the most reward-
ing game of the season. The game was
the last home game for our Seniors and
they played as though they were fully
aware of it.
The first half went scoreless. St.
Francis pulled ahead early in the third
quarter with a l4-O score. Stepinac re-
taliated and by the fourth quarter the
game became a battle to break the tie.
Neither team succeeded, and the game
ended with Stepinac 5 yards from a
touchdown.
Ken Northcutt was given the game
ball for outstanding offensive and defen-
sive play.

Quarterback looks for a receiver.
Porcelli evades tackler.
Stepinac finished her '64 season against
Chaminade, at Mineola. The Flyers forced a
26-O shutout on our Crusader eleven. The
spectator participation was probably the finest
experienced all year.
Several bad bounces gave the Flyers the
edge, A first period blocked-punt set up the
first Chaminade score. Later, a fumble again
placed Chaminade in position for a touchdown,
which they drove for and obtained.
Stepinac revealed a new offense on the first
play of the game. lt accomplished its purpose,
to further confuse the opponents, and it was
laid aside. Standouts in this game were Bill
Darrow, Ed Porcelli and Gary Davidson,
Northcutt blocks while Porcelli skirts end.

With the opening of the cross-country season, Stepinac's
prospects were all but bright. ln a pre-seasonal meet with

Glynn and Kuhlman retrace steps.
Race begins with Stepinac near lead.
Dobson came through again as he ran the fastest time a
Stepinac man has ever attained, a spectacular l3:5l, giving
the school a second place in the C.H.S.A.A. Sectional Cham-
pionships.
Then the mood of the team was dampened when they
slipped into sixth place at the Catholic Championships. How-
ever, they spirited themselves to a first place victory in the
Xaverian Brothers' Meet. The victory was one of the team's
truly great achievements due to the fact that two J.V. mem-
bers, Kevin Butler and Bill Collins, ran with the Varsity and
also due to Jed Dobson's ZOO yard first place in the Sophomore
division. ln the meet Tom Glynn took second, Tom Martin
fourth and Dan O'Donnell fifth.
The J.V. this season consisted of Senior Bill Collins,
Junior Kev Butler, and Sophomore Nick Fond, Dave Beland,
Rich Gaglie, and Ken Beckley. Coach Krebs believes the team
to be one of the finest and he has great hopes for next year.
Mr. Liberi again turned out a fine group of Freshmen.

INDOOR TRACK
The Stepinac harriers seem to be B-O-A-R-D stiff as they work out during
the cold indoor season.
The Crusaders' Dan O'DonneII leaves the tape and is on his way to a first place
in the half-mile run.
Tom Glynn crouches, anxiously, moments before the two-
mile run,
Bill Collins paces nervously, as Tom Glynn converses with
a Mount harrier.
". . . l wonder what Coach will
say?" ponders senior Frank Po-
korny.
Seniors Dan O'DonneII and Tom Martin have been
standing shoulder to shoulder both off as well as on
the track for the past four years.
Teamwork is the thingg but then again, the Coach
isn't bad either.
Senior Jack O'Keefe "cleans up" at an indoor
meet.
"Hey! Do the mouse, yea!"
George Allen: multi-record breaker with the
shot, school president, and one of the most
outstanding people Stepinac has ever seen.

Joe Garagiola is one of Stepinac's biggest, and surest
hopes for the future.
Gary Davidson practices with the javelin.

Dave Mclntosh, Bill Collins, and Len Petrucelli talk over a forthcoming meet during
an afternoon practice.
Jack O'Keefe and Terry Garvey take a few laps in a pre-

Neither rain, nor snow, nor sleet, nor hail has interfered
with Tom Glynn or Dan O'DonneIl-noble harriers.
Coach Bill Krebs looks over this year's track
team, with great satisfaction.

On the night of November 6, the curtain rose
on the production of Robert Bolt's "A Man For All
Seasonsn. Presented by the "Genesians" ot Stepi-
nac and the "Peg-o's" of Good Counsel, the show
ran for two additional nights, November l3 and
l4, and a matinee on November 8. The response
to this presentation was gratifying. The production
was lauded for its fine acting and scenic design,
all of which can be attributed to the devoted work
of Fr. James Cashman, the director. Fr. Cashman
was aided in this endeavor by Louis Pellegrino,
production stage managerg Michael Keough, master
electrician, and Gary Ritter, general manager.

Dances held at Stepinac have always been known
for their fine spirit and imagination. This year was
no exception as Father Tobin and his dance commit-
tee continually presented a winning combination of
design and color.
Late hours and hard work are prerequisites for an
attractive dance floor. Evidence of both could be seen
just hours before the dances, as Jay Mahoney, the
chairman, and other committeemen busily prepared
for the night's activity. lt was apparent all through the
year that this work was ot the highest quality and
deserving of much praise.

Tim Mylod, Bob Guarnieri, and alumnus Bob Riedel attempt to harmonize.
One of the ingredients of a successful dance is an exciting and vibrant
dance band. Such has been the case with this year's band, "The Shepherds".
Under the direction of their multi-talented leader, Robert Guarnieri, the Shep-
herds have delighted their audiences with the kind of music which is capable
of pleasing everyone. Having played at private affairs as well as school
dances, the Shepherds have enjoyed the kind of popularity which can only
be attributed to the talent of the musicians who comprise the band.
Saxophonist Paul Rutkowski and trumpeter Tim Mylod carried many of
the melodies while Chris Hughes, the only non-senior member of the band,
provided the beat. Steve Cribari was the guitarist of the group and Bob
Guarnieri rounded out the quintet with the accordion.

The purpose of a glee club is to foster a love and understanding of choral arrangement. To this end,
the Stepinac Glee Club once again combined with the Glee Club of Our Lady of Good Counsel to present
their annual Christmas concert. On the night of December l8, these two groups, under the knowledgeable
direction of Father William McGann, included in their performance: "The Little Drummer Boy", "Do You
Hear What l Hear?", and two selections from Handel's "Messiah"q "For Unto Us a Child ls Born" and the
"Hallelujah Chorus".
Besides the entertainment provided by the glee clubs, there was a violin solo by Andrew Niedermaier,
a selection by the duo-pianists Father McGann and Cathy Uhl, and an early English carol rendered by four
young ladies from Good Counsel.
Andrew Niedermaier plays "Czardas" by Monti.
"Susanni".

Successfully mastering the score of a Broadway musical
is no easy task. Only through weeks of practice can a
satisfying performance be attained. Under the direction
of Fr. McGann, this end was reached and the result was
very rewarding. Especially noteworthy concerning this
year's orchestra was the addition of students from Maria
Regina, Valhalla, and White Plains high schools.

Dancing to the rhythms of the George Ab-

bright and exciting interpretation of this very
professional music. This current show saw the
return of seniors Rene Donnard, James Lantier,
and Arthur DePasqua to the dance floor.

An alumnus becomes a priest
Each year the Stepinac seniors are given the op-
portunity to expand their spiritual life by attending a
closed retreat. Here are pictured some scenes from
the Gonzaga Retreat House, the facilities of which
have been used for many years. Unlike other years,
the retreats ot this year were all held during the same
period at various retreat houses throughout the area.
A school retreat was also held during the sarne period
for the remainder ot the student body.
