Much pensive reflection and effort go into the preparation of the Patriot. Dick Rael mulls over the development of an idea before putting pencil to paper. P 'l'lllll'l' What is a yearbook? An account of the events and activities of the passing year, yes, but even more than that, it is a permanent record which will not and cannot be effaced, just as our past actions can never be changed. This book that we have made will be read and read again, endlessly, in years to come. Each time this volume is opened, what we have said and done will live once more. It may be a somewhat disquieting realization for the graduating senior to apply to himself the words that he may remember from Shakespeare's Sonnet XVIII: So long as men shall breathe or eyes can see, So long lives this, and this gives life to thee. This 1956 Patriot, then, is a memory which extends to the past but also stretches out to an indefinite future. If the staff has succeeded in its modest. goal of portraying in picture and in print Carroll as you knew it, we shall feel amply repaid for our efforts. Adams find that a good deal of preparatory work is necessary before a new book can be placed on the shelves. Carl Moeller and Neil Kenny replace books that have been returned to the library. Carroll's well- balanced collection provides source material for class assignments as well as recreational reading. LIBB RY CL B Few extra-curricular activities are so closely related to the educational program of the school and confer such direct benefits upon the members as does the library club. Through their daily work in the library the staff gains a first-band knowledge of a wide variety of standard sources of infor- mation. Under the supervision of Father Boyle, library club members are trained to carry out the routine tasks involved in cataloguing, processing books for the shelves, and circulating them to students. During the past year a notable event was the program arranged for Catholic Book Week, to which parents and students from other schools were invited. Featured were prominent speakers and an elaborate display of Catholic books, magazines, and newspapers.
