Much pensive reflection and effort go into the preparation of the Patriot. Dick Rael mulls over the development of an idea before putting pencil to paper. P 'l'lllll'l' What is a yearbook? An account of the events and activities of the passing year, yes, but even more than that, it is a permanent record which will not and cannot be effaced, just as our past actions can never be changed. This book that we have made will be read and read again, endlessly, in years to come. Each time this volume is opened, what we have said and done will live once more. It may be a somewhat disquieting realization for the graduating senior to apply to himself the words that he may remember from Shakespeare's Sonnet XVIII: So long as men shall breathe or eyes can see, So long lives this, and this gives life to thee. This 1956 Patriot, then, is a memory which extends to the past but also stretches out to an indefinite future. If the staff has succeeded in its modest. goal of portraying in picture and in print Carroll as you knew it, we shall feel amply repaid for our efforts.
