Confident of ultimate victory, Bill Ryan catches a brief nap at the rostrum. It took our best men to do it, but we aut- talked the girls. The 1955-56 senior debating team. Fr. Gonzaga placed first with a seven and one record. The topic for all debates this year was, Resolved: That governmental subsidies should be granted to high school graduates who qualify for additional training. Although graduation will claim six debaters, their places will be ably filled by candidates moving up from the junior team.

Baker, Interest in debating reached a new high this year with a large turnout of students to swell the ranks of the junior debaters. With Father Arthur ,Smith directing the junior debaters and Father Skelly continuing as moderator of the seniors, a program of intramural and prac- tice debates was organized in preparation for the league meetings. Special attention was given to logical thinking and orderly development of arguments, as well as to the mechanics of speech and delivery. R. Titus, -A. Fowler, J. Turner. Back Row: J. Moore, Fr. A. Above: Gathering information and compiling notes for a debate is an arduous task, but not an altogether unrewarding one-especially when Carroll comes out on top in the com- petition! DEBATI G Fr. Skelly works with two debaters in preparing their talks. Under the moderator's direction, the senior debating team has become one of the area's top forensic groups.

Much pensive reflection and effort go into the preparation of the Patriot. Dick Rael mulls over the development of an idea before putting pencil to paper. P 'l'lllll'l' What is a yearbook? An account of the events and activities of the passing year, yes, but even more than that, it is a permanent record which will not and cannot be effaced, just as our past actions can never be changed. This book that we have made will be read and read again, endlessly, in years to come. Each time this volume is opened, what we have said and done will live once more. It may be a somewhat disquieting realization for the graduating senior to apply to himself the words that he may remember from Shakespeare's Sonnet XVIII: So long as men shall breathe or eyes can see, So long lives this, and this gives life to thee. This 1956 Patriot, then, is a memory which extends to the past but also stretches out to an indefinite future. If the staff has succeeded in its modest. goal of portraying in picture and in print Carroll as you knew it, we shall feel amply repaid for our efforts. Front Row: Dick Rael, Pat Hickey, John Warner, Bill Ryan. Second Row: Dennie Flynn, John Courtney, Neil Kenny, Jeff Bowman, Tom O'Pray. Third Row: Jack Urban, Dave Lippert, Don McGarvey, Jerry Sullivan, Hugh Miller, Bob Hawkins. Back Row: John Marchetti, Ray Cranston, John Dimond.
