Dedzmfed to our founding father HIS EXCELLENCY MOS'l' REVEBEND PATRICK A. 0'BOYLE, D. D. ABCHBISHUP 0F WASIIINGTUN Plans for an archdiocesan high school for boys in Washington were initiated in 1944 by the Most Reverend Michael j. Curley, Archbishop of Baltimore and Washington. Realizing the necessity for further educational facilities to supplement the already existing Catholic private schools, Archbishop Curley called upon the Most Reverend John M. McNamara, Auxiliary Bishop, to head a special committee to secure a site and raise funds for the new venture. When .Archbishop O'Boyle came to Washington in 1948, following the untimely death of Archbishop Curley, he found that Bishop McNamara had carried forward the work with vision and zeal. Immediately Archbishop O'Boyle gave new impetus to the project. Under his stimulating leadership efforts were redoubled to translate hope into actuality. .Architectural plans were completed and approved, construction bids were accepted, and, brick by brick, the school began to rise. The culmination of the work of years arrived on September 9, 1951 with the dedication of Archbishop Carroll High School. Our beloved Archbishop has shown in countless ways during the past five years his continuing favor toward Carroll. He has honored us by offering the opening Mass of the school year and addressing the assembled student body. He has been an enthusiastic supporter of all our school activities. He has encouraged both students and faculty to make of Carroll one of the finest secondary schools in the nation. The labor of many hands went into the building of our school. With the humility characteristic of a great leader, our Archbishop would prefer to attribute elsewhere the credit for what has been accom-plished. But as Bishop McNamara said on the occasion of the dedication, 'tOnly those who are acquainted with the history of the project know how much of time, thought and labor Archbishop O'Boyle has devoted to the planning and erection of Archbishop Carroll High School. It is his monument, and throughout the years it will stand as a witness to his zeal in the cause of Catholic education. With a deep sense of gratitude the Class of 1956 presents this volume of the PATRIOT to His Excellency, Most Reverend Patrick A. O'Boyle, D.D., Archbishop of Washington. F CULTY Down through the centuries priests of the Order of Saint Augustine, the spiritual sons of the illustrious thinker, writer, and teacher of the early Church, have carried on the work of education in many lands. Here at Carroll the Augustinians con- tinue, inthe tradition of their founder, to give to their students the best training available any- where. A group of exceptional lay teachers also plays a signiticant part in the molding of the Carroll man, for by their instruction and example the student comes to realize the iniluence for good that may be exerted in the world by the apostolic Catholic laity.
