Nestled on a gently rolling plain in
the shadow of the majestic San Gabriel
Mountains lies an everlasting reminder
of the rancho era in the history of early
California. Mission San Gabriel, known
as "The Pride of the Missions" was
founded over 150 years ago and the
surrounding lands became the famed
Rancho Santa Anita.
Today, the Rancho lands comprise the
residential areas of the City of Arcadia,
but a reminder of the past is encom-
passed in the grassy slopes and early
buildings found in the Los Angeles State
and County Arboretum where the his-
toric residence and buildings of the
famed E. J. "Lucky" Baldwin and Hugo
Reid are being restored and an exten-
sive program of experimental work in
the botanical field is being pursued.
Arcadia is proud of the Arboretum,
internationally recognized as one of the
most progressive arboreta in the coun-
try, which is preserving the charm and
beauty of the rancho era while moving
steadily ahead in the creation of world-
famous botanical gardens. It is to the
Los Angeles State and County Arboretum,
in the heart of Arcadia, that the 1958
Arcadian is proudly dedicated.

Queen Anne Cottage
Tucked away in the majestic stand of trees and front-
ing on the serene lagoon stands the famous Queen Anne
Cottage, built by Baldwin as a guest house. Designed by
architect A. A. Bennett, who had also designed the State
Capitol buildings in Sacramento, it was the last word in
elegance with marble steps and dainty 'igingerbreadn
ornaments and trimmings. lt was to become one of the
showplaces of the rancho in which people from miles
around were to take temporary residence as guests of
the Baldwin family.
And what of Baldwin, the fabulous rancho owner?
He made his first "big money" from mining stocks. Head-
ing West with his wife, Sarah Ann Unruh, and their
daughter, Clara, he bought the rdncho and added 50,000
acres to his original purchase. He planted groves, vine-
yards and trees, which he loved. Through shrewd man-
agement and foresight, coupled with a true love of the
land, he continued to improve the rancho during his en-
tire lifetime.

Beginning to consider Their tutures more
seriously, the Sophomores have striven to
achieve higher grades and good citizenship
in preparation for Their roles as upper-

after-garne dance and given their support
to all school activities. They can look back
on a year of progress and achievement to-

town to be called ARCADIA. He laid out streets and lots
to be sold and lined Santa Anita Drive with eucalyptus,
many of which are still standing today. He continued
to make many improvements which included an extensive
well system to supply the rancho with water and im-
ported peacocks to roam at large over the grassy slopes.
The brilliant plumage of the peacocks can be seen today
in the Arboretum as the descendants of the original flock
of peacocks strut maiestically through the grounds.
After Baldwin's death in l909, the management of
the rancho passed to his granddaughter, Anita. The main
part of the rancho was divided into sections that have
now become the sites of beautiful homes. For some time,
the Hugo Reid Adobe, the Queen Anne Cottage, the
Coach House, the lagoon and the surrounding area were
left undisturbed and came to resemble a tropical iungle.

However, on January 4, l947, lll acres of the rancho,
including the homestead area, were conveyed tothe State

of California to be developed as a Botanical Garden and
Arboretum. Los Angeles County contributed half the pur-
chase price. The development is being carried on by the
Southern Ca'ifornia Horticultural Institute under lease
agreement with the county and state.

ln order to present the school news to the student body, the Apache Pow
Wow staff publishes two papers a month containing a variety of items, inter-

formation on all important events, manage a well-run advertising staff, introduce
new ideas to the paper, and in general put out a successful publication which

Thy spur. . . it strong and bold.
Lending a bouncing musical rhythm to Arcadia High's football and basketball games is the Pep
Band with their renditions of familiar songs such as the "Johnson Rag" and "When the Saints
Go Marching In." They are a regular feature of all the pep rallies and present the musical por-
tion of the basketball games.

Goatch. House
About the same time that "Lucky" Baldwin built the
beautiful Queen Anne Cottage, he also built the now
well-known coach house. He had a great desire to own,
breed, and race the finest horses in the country and
worked to fulfill this dream. While traveling East for the
express purpose of purchasing brood mares, "Lucky"
bought two Kentucky thoroughbred mares at Saratoga
and also acquired six fine fillies on his return through
that state. These, together with the two stallions, Ruther-
ford and Grinstead, which he already owned, formed the
nucleus of Baldwin's famous racing stable. He increased
this string until he had over seventy-six racers at the
Rancho Santa Anita. He had four winners in the Arneri-
can Derby, considered the premier racing classic. This
Derby was never won more than once by any other
stable. "Lucky" chose the "Maltese Cross" as his racing
insignia. After his death, his daughter Anita erected a
giant concrete Maltese Cross in front of the stud barns
under which the remains of the four Derby winners were
finally interred. Baldwin's life time dream was to own
his own race track. He made plans to build the track
which opened in December, 1907. He lived long enough
to see his horses race there.
The Coach House is also in the process of restoration
and the Maltese Cross can be found on the grounds of
the famed Santa Anita Race Track.
