Dedication To our first student body, faculty, and administration, the builders of the foundation on which Aragon can proudly stand, we dedicate El Tesoro, Aragon's first yearbook. The framers of the constitution, the class and club officers, the commissioners, and the individual students, are setting precedents for generations of future Aragonians. The traditions and cus- toms that We initiate will remain long after we are gone. We have come to Aragon as inexperienced freshmen and sophomoresg we have accepted the duties placed upon us, leaving behind thoughts of our old schools, in estab- lishing a new school of which we can be proud. Although problems remain to be solved, we are on the wayg we have Worked together in setting Aragon on its feet. From These Roots . . . Aragon's roots first began to grow two years ago with the building of the school. These roots became stronger with the students' arrival in January 1961. Yet the classrooms and the student body are not enoughg left to deve- lop is the school spirit and tradition that form our trunk. In the years to come this trunk will develop and branches will grow, according to the fu- ture classes. And yet, these branches will always depend upon the roots that we have formed. m i f a im E1 Tesoro El Tesoro is Spanish for "The Treasure". A Spanish name seems natur- al for Aragon's yearbook, as Aragon is the name of a Spanish province, and our strong Spanish background can be seen in the street names sur- rounding the school and the name of our mascot.- The staff chose El Tesoro as a title because a yearbook is a treasureg it is usually the most significant remembrance of our high school years. As We look back over the busy months there are proud moments to remember: the end of the final game that assured' our Junior Varsity an undefeated seasong the opening act of our first school playg the finale of our first music concert and the completion of our student government constitution. Space does not permit listing all of our fine accomplish- ments. I wish to express my sincere thanks to the faculty and stu- dents for your wonderful spirit and cooperation in gaining for Aragon a respected position in the community and a- mong our sister schools. The Season In November, l96l, Aragon completed its first season of Junior Varsity football by defeating rival San Mateo 6-O to finish the season with a spotless record. Head coach Wayne Taylor and line coach Charles Polk credit the season to team work and an all-out effort by each and every player. The team played as such a unit that it is impossi- ble to choose individual standouts. A combina- tion of teamwork, excel- lent coaching, and the will to win has made pos- sible the outcome of this eventful season. KEEP UP THE SPIRIT, ARAGON. GOOD LUCK NEXT YEAR. Although Aragon's cross country team won only a total of ll out of 27 meets, coach McGuire predicts a much better team next year which will be a result of Aragon's tough course and our excellent Frosh harriers. Excellent performances in the F rosh division were turned in at all meets by Capt. Wendell Chun, Gus Nevarez, Wayne Schrader, and Bernd Gundermann. The Freshman team placed third in the P. L. league with 7 wins and 2 losses. Outstanding Frosh-Soph runners were Capt. Mike Umehara, Art Caswell, jeff Mortenson, and Rich Gossett. The Frosh-Soph team placed fifth with 4 wins and 5 losses. Although the Varsity placed last in the P. L.standingS with a nine loss and zero win record, it is expected to do considerably better next year due to a much larger varsity team. Noted varsity harriers were Capt. jim Addams and R. Torkelson. Varsity Basketball This year our "Cinderella" team surprised many of our P. L. neighbors by winning nine out of eighteen games. With a team comprised of sophomores and juniors we finished 7th out of ten teams in the team offense section with 46.0 points per game. Our sharp defensive skills put us in 3rd place, allowing opponents only 45 .3 points per game. As you remember, most of the games were cliff hangers and heart stoppers. Aragon was fortunate to have the all league performances of Brice Pearson who scored 238 points for a 14.0 point per game average. For this he was honored with a berth on the ALL-PL 2nd team. Mark jorgenson who showed smart and aggressive playing on the court scored 187 points with an 11.7 game average. Filling out the starting lineup were Rick Teitgen with a 7.3 game average, Barry Secrest with a 5 .3 game average, and Rich Wirgler with a 7.3 game average. A fine late-season performance was turned in by Lance Block. This season showed that next year's team is heading for the top, and with the school's backing it is bound to go all out for Aragon. To add another glory to our season, coach Ed Diaz was selected by the Peninsula Sportswriters as the "coach of the year" for 1962. "Bn Team Though not enjoying the most successful of seasons, the "B" basketballers did give the league's top teams some tough competition. When a need arose on the Varsity, the team was forced to give up its two top rebounders, and thereby gave up essential height. The B's coached by Mr. Henry Warner, did garner two wins over Terra Nova. "C" Team The C's team had the misfortune of losing numerous contests in the last few minutes of play. They ended up with a 6-7 season, which is not representative of their skill and ability. After losing 3 early games, they fought back hard for five wins against San Mateo, Terra Nova, Camino Real, Bulingame, and Mills. The "big gun" for the C's was Charlie Howard, who scored 126 points for a 9.6 game average. Randy Keafer and Gary Fracchia posted 6.8 and 5 .4 averages respectively. Filling out the starting five were Stan Bingham and Bob Somerby. With only a few returning players from the C's, the hopes for next year lie with the experienced "D" squad, who will be playing C's. "D" Team Aragon can be proud of this first season in D's competition. The team developed well throughout the season and showed seven wins against six losses. Coaches Ed Diaz and Norm Rupp praised the performances of Red O'Neil as one of the leagues top scorers with 100 points for a 7. 8 average. Scrappy play maker, Bob Marcucci's average of 4. 8 does not show his importance to the team, as he lead the team to numerous victories. The starting lineup con- sisted of Red O'Neil and john Delange as forwards, Dennis Casagrande and Bob Marcucci as guards, and Steve Bingham at the center position. With the returning of lettermen Bob Marcucci and Dennis Casagrande plus Wes Chun and jim Norris next year, an eventful season can be expected. V A R S I T Y Baseloall Row 1: C. Nelson, I. Pelzner, R. Thus far the record in practice games indicates the team will fare well. Pitchers Steve Tyrell and Greg Woodard, Catcher Rick Wirgler, Basemen jay Heller, Pete Lewis, and Chuck Biederman are among the team members upon whom this year's hopes are based. "Great expectations" are also entertained for Short Stop Mark Jorgensen and Outfielders Steve Trueblood, Chris Nelson, and Chuck Ross. F L L f ,Y J 65 Swimming Row ONE, LEFT TO RIGHT: J. Kucin, L. "B" Team The Don's B team had a lot of swim- mers who had moved up from last year's C team . Returning C lettermen were Bob Allen, freestyle, jim Esten, back- strokeg and Frank Suechting, breast- stroke. Filling out the team were Stan Conales, backstrokeg john Hughes, breaststrokeg Al Barick and jim Akin, butterfly. Two newcomers to this year's squad were Conrad Hamako and Tom Galbraith both freestyle, who bolstered this year's fine squad. ROW ONE, LEFT TO RIGHT: B. Ament, T. Cano, D. Wilrnerotb, S. Smith, T. Varsity Aragon's Varsity squad failed to enter the win column last year, having only freshmen and sophomores: however, this year's squad was no pushover. Lloyed Loomis, the Don's super merman, led this year's team. He swam the Individual Medley and the gruelling 400 yard free- style. Also leading the attack was Lance Block who placed 6th in the P L. in the 100 yard butterfly as a sophomore. The Varsity was sparked by john Clow and Don Reeves, freestyle, Rich Radez, breaststrokeg Jerry Richardson and Brad Alden, backstrokeg and Dave Hook in the Individual Medley. ONE, LEFT TO RIGHT: T. "C" Team Aragon's C's swim team was composed mainly of freshmen with a few returning sophomores. The C team had a good ex- perienced swimmer in freshman Bill Haile. Bill swam all strokes well and will probably end up as' a breaststroker . Returning sophomores were Jim Norris, Don Ahlert, and Rich Coker, freestyle, Charlie Daniels, butterfly. Added to this list was an excellent transfer, Dennis Willmeroth, breaststroke. This year's team showed great potential for the future. A Fight to the Finish Q7 ,- X v Row One: A. Bennett, D. And, as the school's first students, we may reflect on the parts We have played in Aragon's future. Although we have had the solemn duties of writing a con- stitution and forming a student court, this year has not been without its lighter and equally memo- rable times. We were the first to see Aragon under a blanket of unexpected snow. We devised a Spirit Week, during which previous loyalties were re- jected and replaced with enthusiasm for Aragon. Culture showed itself in the Picasso Art Exhibit staged in our library. But the climax of these fast-moving months was Aragon's first birthday -- complete with cake! Yes, this has been a formative year, full of "firsts. " Yet dominating the year was the process of education, yielding heartvvarm- ing times, too. ah? X I 90 i A E The Night of An Evening "The Match s I In September an AHS drama department was almost nonexis- tent. We had a teacher and the- ater, but few experienced drama students. Yet hard work and enthusiasm turned a group of novices into the polished per- formers who presented "The Night of january l6th" last fall. It was this same determination that made "An Evening of Com- January 16th of Comedy trriakerv edy" just as huge when it presented " "Red Carnations," Chairs" during the When the yearbook "The Matchmaker,' ,department's offeri was still in rehear certain, however, and crew will keep work of their prede a success Fumed Oak," and "The winter. went to press ' the drama ng for spring sal. Reporters must have studied at least o.ne semester of journalism, and work com- pletely on their own time Writ- ting stories for the San Mateo Times and the Advance Star. News Bureau Aragon Players Guild The Aragon Players is our chapter of the National Thespian So- ciety, an honorary organ ization for students who have distinguished them- selves in dramatics. Membership is attained by earning a designated number of points in work on the cast or crew of various plays. 96 Row One: Laurie Buzan, Toni Aguiar, Joann Reed. Many hours of hard work went into the planning and compiling of Aragon's first yearbook. We are grateful to many people for so generously giving of their time, efforts , and talents in order that our task might be accomplished. We would like to express our thanks to the Mirro-Graphic Yearbook Company and to the Kee Coleman Photographers for invaluable technical help with our yearbook. Secondly, to our adviser, Mr. Parker, for giving of his talents, and for shoulder- ing the worry of meeting a deadline or finding a misplaced page and for his patience and efforts to make our work a success , we express our thanks. We are also grateful to the members of our staff who reported each week day after school for work meetings and who capably took care of the details of planning their respective sections. Without the help of each of these individuals who so successfully endured the pressures of making a yearbook, our book would never have been completed. Finally, to you the readers, who have so graciously given us your support in our work, we express our thanks.
