ST DE T COU CIL The Student Council is the voice of the student body as expressed by their elected representatives. Its function is twofold: to act as a liason with the admini- stration, and to assist in the organization and direction of student activities. This year, as in the past, the Student Council, under the careful eye of Fr. Hart, sponsored a number of social activities, such as the Victory Dance at the close of the football season, and the St. Pat's Day Frolic to chase away mid-Lent dol- drums. Also they aided in furnishing the cheerleaders with uniforms so that they would look as well as they sound. The senior officers have given excellent guidance and a direction this past year. ln a special assembly the entire staff and student body were afforded the opportunity of seeing how expertly the meetings are conducted each Monday afternoon. The pattern has been established, let us hope that it will be continued. Director 'u A I .V fx FR. L. G. HART, C.S.B. Courtesy of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Rogers Fund, 1907. While the catacombs were primarily places of buriali from the earliest times the faithful assembled in them to celebrate the Eucharistic Sacrifice. With so much secrecy was this mystery guarded that it was revealed to the catachumens only after long preparation and testing of sincerity. To express this profound mystery the early church used symbols, a fish to represent Christ and loaves of bread and a vial of wine to indicate the Holy Eucharist. The Department of History explains factually and theoretically to the student the events of the past and the present, and prepares him for the future. A young Catholic is better able to interpret the modern world and his relation to it when he has digested the facts of history. He is capable of becoming a good citizen only when he understands the duties of a citizen, and the relationship of a citizen to the state l 1 .47 Mr. Kelly Ends that the earth is even rounder than he is Croundj. Because that bird was thought to feed its young with its own blood, it became a symbol of self-sacrifice and therefore of Christ giving His blood for the redemption of man- kind on Calvary, and the Sacrament of the Eu- charist. St. Thomas in his hymn to the Blessed Sacrament, Adoro Te, sings of Christ as our Pelican: O loving Pelican! O Jesu Lord! Unclean I am, but cleanse me in Thy Blood! Of which a single drop, for sinners spilt, Can purge the entire world from all its guilt. rt, Fletcher Fund, 1955 J Acolyre Club page 90 St. Thomas Club page 90 Sodaliry page 92-93 Missions page 94-95 Maroon and White page 96-97 Arere page 98-99 CONTENTS Language Clubs page 100-101 Science Clubs page 102 Oraroricals page 102 Debating page 103 Arr, Camera, Chess Clubs page 104 Cardinal Newman Library Club page 105 Standing: john McKe0n, james Schae- fer, Michael Sullivan. The realization that this book was to be a means of recalling Aquinas days in the future and not merely a brochure to be read and discarded prompted these dedicated students to forge ahead. This pictorial record is precisely designed to bring back memories in later years of the friends that were made the teachers, and the activities that complemented academic endeavors. The staff this year has attempted to produce a year- book that will be a fitting tribute not only to the parents of the senior class, but to all parents of Aquinas students. The young often fail to express what is in their hearts. We hope that at least the 1960 Arete has done that for them. FR. H. C. PERRY, C.S.B. Also the many contributions of the Italians are investigated. While the Italian Club is open only to stu- dents of the Italian language, it still has a great influence on Aquinas. Students see the importance of this Italian in many other areas. R ITY FOOTB- LL The thudding of pads and the rousing shouts of Go-Team-Go have faded into the the dimness of distant events. But like the deeds of mighty men, the efforts of our gridiron warriors deserve recording in the annals of school history. Seniors will set this book aside after crisscrossing photographic artistry with ink-filled, witty sayings. Underclassmen will glance and pass on to another year. Let us, however, strike with strong and indelible pen a record of pride for the class of 1960 to fill later years with satisfying memories. C5 Looking strictly at the won and lost columns, there is nothing over- lustrous in the record. But to those who know the value of the game, UO' Coach Repko caught during an anxious moment who have spent long hours coaching and being coached, it stands as a proud document of honest sportsmanship.
