Priests of St. Basil, popularly known as the Basilian
Fathers.
To give the church learned priests with the real
sacerdotal spirit was the goal of Bishop d'Aviau,
Archbishop of Vienne, when, the revolutionary
storm having passed, Christian France began to re-
vive. The prudent Archbishop, therefore, started
an establishment destined to ensure the restoration
of the clergy from the very start. In 1798, he chose
a village, St. Symphorion de Mahur, hidden in the
mountains of Vivorais. With joseph Bouvier-La-
pierre as pastor, he established a college whose
purpose was to teach Latin.
The college moved in 1802 to Annonay, a part
of the diocese of Vienne, when a concordat between
Napoleon and the papacy had assured peace to the
Church in France. The teaching staff lived under a
rule and were called the "Teaching Priests of An-
nonayf' In 1822, ten priests thought it advisable
to become a religious community and thus provide
for the continuity of their work. The first novitiate
cfs-kafor
was located in the parish of St. Basile so that the
priests became known as the Priests of St. Basil.
The first Basilians came to America in 1850 at
the invitation of the Archbishop of Toronto. Their
first endeavor in the United States was a parish in
Detroit in 1886, Aquinas was entrusted to the con-
gregation in 1937.
The general aim of the Basilians, in common
with all religious institutes, is the glory of God
and the sanctification of its members. The particular
aim of the Basilian Fathers is the welfare of souls,
especially through the education of youth.
Besides teaching, the works of the Congregation
present a wide variety. In 1935, the first priest was
appointed to the Mexican Missions in Texas. At
the present time this Mission is made up of four
Mission centers from which the missionaries serve
the surrounding area.
We are proud and happy to have spent our
high school years with a group of men who uphold
and carry on such a great tradition. We will pray
JJ

that God will continue to help the Basilians teach
Aquinas students "Goodness, Discipline, and Know
ledge."

Father Charles P Donovan C S B
I thou wzlt be per ect go sell what thou hast and gzze to the poor and
thou shalt haze treasure zn heaven
These words were heard and followed thirty-nine and twenty-four years ago
respectively by two members of the present Aquinas faculty, Father Charles P.
Donovan, C.S.B. and Father Raymond L. Prince, C.S.B. who this year celebrate
their twentieth anniversary of educating Aquinas students.
Fr. Donovan was born March 18, 1892 in Wellsville, New York, ordained
February 29, 1920 by Bishop Fallon and became a permanent member of the
Aquinas faculty in 1939. Before coming to Aquinas he had taught at St. Michael's
High School in Toronto, Assumption High in Windsor, and Catholic Central in
Detroit. Mathematics has been the field of many of Father's memorable endeavors.
Fr. Prince was born on january 28, 1916 in Windsor, Ontario, where he
received his secondary and university education at Assumption High School and
College. Fr. Prince was ordained a Basilian Father on December 21, 1935, and after
accomplishing the work of parish priest for four years at St. Anne's in Detroit,
became a member of the Aquinas faculty in 1939. The men of Aquinas have come
to appreciate his light humor and sagacious advice.
To Fr. Donovan, C.S.B. and Fr. Prince, C.S.B. who for twenty years have
given so much and doubtless received insufficient appreciation, the student body
of 1959 humbly and gratefully dedicate our yearbook, the Arete.

St. Basil's Seminary, Toronto, Ont.
Five members of the Class of 1958 have entered the Rochester
Novitiate of the Basilian Fathers located at 402 Augustine St. It will
be the last group to spend their novitiate year in Rochester.
After a novice has completed one year of training, he makes his
profession of the three vows, poverty, chastity and obedience for one
year. Then he is sent to one of the colleges maintained by the commun-
ity. After receiving his degree he will eventually pursue a four year
course in theology at St. Basil's Seminary, Toronto. After ordination
and the completion of his studies, he will be sent to one of the com-
munity foundations located in either the United States, Canada, or
France. Depending on his training and desires he will be called on to
be a Basilian teacher, parish priest or missionary.

And now for my next joke . . .
clhrifor
Fr. P. Etlinger, C.S.B.
Director
Polybius, a Greek historian who lived
two centuries before Christ, commented,
. . Man as a living Creature, is rendered
useless if deprived of its eyes, so, if you
take truth from history, what is left but
an unprofitable tale."
History is the recording of events up
to and including the present. To record
history without the truth would be like
man without God, for what is man but
the slime of the earth.
Authenticity in history excels at Aqui-
nas, whether it be Citizenship Education,
World History, American History, or even
a slight touch of Canadian History. Men
of Aquinas, through the Basilian Fathers
learn history as fact, not theory, as more
than a barrage of dull dates and names,
but rather as a story of man severing one
by one the shackles of slavery and emerg-
ing into a peaceful world founded on
democracy and Christian Principles.
The results of the Congress of Vienna are des
cribed by Mr. Graham to Paul Croce and Leslie

Fr. A. F. Butler, C.S.B.
Director
For the past year there has been a tremendous reawakening in the
field of science. Its increased importance is due to its position as the
chief factor in the Cold Wfar and our struggle for survival.
With this increased interest in Science, it is hard to see why the
world remains so atheistic. The deeper that we delve into the pro-
fundities of science, the more we should realize the Greatness, Power,
and Intelligence of our Creator, who is constantly allowing us to dis-
cover more of the minute secrets of His Creation. In the past our efforts
for the most part have been unsuccessful because we have relied on
the effect more than on the Cause.

Fr. M. Sheehan, C.S.B.
Director
Aquinas is justly proud of its Language Department, which
instructs students in the choice of Latin, French, German, Spanish,
Greek, and Italian. Besides providing this wide selection, the
department strives to give the student a wide knowledge of the
language through various means, such as records and attendance
at lectures. To make the mother country's present life and her
varied contributions to the world familiar, films are shown in
the classroom, and the students present seminars on particular
topics. In some cases correspondence has been set up with Euro-
pean students.
The study of a foreign language is becoming more and more
essential in today's world with European countries only hours
away. Speaking the other fellows language is the first step in
establishing bonds with him.

Fr. J. A. O'Reilly, C.S.B.
Director
justice is defined as "giving every man his due." So business demands
justice in dealing with competitors, business associates, customers, employers
and employees.
Business courses at Aquinas are designed not only to provide the basic
knowledge, skills and ideas for successful living in the business world of
today, but also to show their relationship with God and the all-important
virtue of justice.
Business students of Aquinas are proud to be able to approach and
converse with people from all walks of life, knowing that they will be
well instructed in the fundamentals of modern-day business under the motto
"Teach Me Goodness, Discipline, and Knowledge."

Librarian L
Our library at Aquinas expertly meets the needs and
demands of every student. The best in fiction, biography,
and specialized subjects, is available, as well as a wide
selection of popular magazines.
The reference section is one of the students best friends,
placing at his disposal up-to-date materials. It has been
said that the library is the heart of the school. This is
especially true at Aquinas.
Fr. 1. L. Cullen, c.s.B. 24 i
Director In
The artistic side of the Aquinas student is not neglected.
Courses of graded difficulty are available in the field of
art. They range from Basic Art to those that develop the
greater abilities. Art contests, using various media are
held throughout the year and the prize winning works are
put on public view.

In order to have 21 complete educa-

the job of the Health department. To
keep physically fit there are gym classes

year Regents course, Health, is pro-
vided. XY'ithin the scope of this course
we find: structure of the body, care

The Student Council of Aquinas is as
the name implies the student governing
body at the school. The Council was founded
to aid the school authorities in organizing
eventsg fostering school spirit and preserving
discipline. Not to be overlooked however,
is its function as an effective medium for
propagating Catholic Action.
The Council under the direction of the
Vice-Principal, Fr L. G. Hart, C.S.B., is com-
posed of four representatives from each
class as well as four ofhcers chosen from
among the Seniors. Members of the Council
are chosen by their fellow students, who
look to them for effective leadership and
sterling example.

1959
It would be rash to say that there are
not many headaches involved in the pro-
duction of a yearbook.
If you like the cover, and you better,
and who wouldnit, it may interest you to
know how it was selected. After many
designs were submitted by members of
the staff, and anyone who walked by the
door, the present one was selected as being
less appropriate than the others by the
members of the staff, with the exception
of our Editor, Larry McAlpine, who never
liked any but his own.
The typewriters in 201 had a good
solid pounding by those who had never
seen a machine before. Surprising enough
the printer was able to find the correct
letters among all the mistakes.
The Editor and the assistants put up
and admirable battle against the Director
at every turn . . . It's wonderful to have
power.
We the staff await your decision as to
the merits of the 1959 Arete. Line up! I 2

The basic function of the Maroon and XY'hite
is to supply the student body with a factual re-
port of the varied and spirited activities of
Aquinas, as well as a sort of unofficial school
historian, preserving in permanent form a chron-
icle of Aquinas achievement.
The essentials of quality newsprinting-inte1lig-
ible and effective expression, original and arrest-
ing style, as well as accuracy of expression are
carefully stressed.
Traditional objectives of the Maroon and
XY'hite are to support general school functions,
to publicize and encourage the activities of co-
curricular organizations, to report student opinion,
to stimulate constructive thinking-in short to
generate a high caliber of school spirit. Attain-
ment of this aim more than compensates for the
generous portion of time and energy devoted to
its production.

Members of the Club offer a prayer before the opening of "Two
Blind Mice."
f. genediuri
Hard work plus talent is the successful formula of the St.
Genesius Club, the students dramatic group at Aquinas. The club
offers students the opportunity to develop ability in all phases of
the thespian art. It not only gives members experience in acting
but in production, direction, stage managing facets of the theater.
The group, directed by Fr. Cullen, again enjoyed a very suc-
cessful season. The first offering of the year was a comedy, "Two
Blind Mice." Within a few short months the second production,
"H.M.S. Pinafore," was presented to a very appreciative audience.
The third and final production of the 1958-59 season will be
"Finian's Rainbow" a musical of outstanding beauty and charm.
The St. Genesius Club deserves and receives many curtain calls.

The Aquinas Oratory Program is under the expert and capable direction
of Fr. T. Miller. Through the many long months Father devotes many hours
to instructing the young men who will represent Aquinas in the various
Oratorical contests such as the Bishop's Oratorical, the American Legion and
the Optimists Club.
The important contests are preceded by the school oratoricals spon-
sored by the English Department. It is the method used to select the Aquinas
representative in the Bishop's Oratoricals. We should all take notice of the
very great contribution that Fr. Miller and the English teachers make to the
life and intellectual growth of Aquinas.

Zoids!! Qs
Ideas vary greatly on what constitutes a successful
football season. But, there are no doubts in the minds of
Aquinas rooters that the 1958 season fits in the success
category.
The record was a great improvement over the previous
year. After a poor 2-5 record for the preceding year's
efforts, the Little Irish bounced back to a 6-2 in '58, This
accomplishment is almost tribute enough to a great coach-
ing job and a hard working squad.
But the record alone does not tell the complete story.
The tremendous attendance and support of the student
body made the winning record worthwhile. The spirit
that pervaded the hallways as well as the athletic fields
warrants a resounding applause for both players and
spectators! Successful seasons require more than a favor-
able balance of wins and losses!

Wfinning the First Annual Rochester Catholic Diocesan Tournament
was the highlight of the 1958-59 basketball season. It made an ordinary
record a glowing one.
But one sad note was sounded with the announcement that Mr. Lou
Basile was leaving. After seven years as head mentor, Coach Basile re-
gretfully moves to a new position. Aquinas, while it is very sorry to lose
such an exemplary Catholic layman and excellent trainer of men, is, at
the same time, happy with his personal advancement.
THANKS MR. LOU BASILE, AND GOD B

Once again the Missions will be enriched
with needed supplies and facilities because
of the tremendous show put on by twenty-
four young Aquinas boxers before a crowd
of 3,645 at the War Memorial.
It was a night of thrills and upsets. Only
joe Colaianni retained his crown. The de-
fenders displayed great spirit but their chal-
lengers were a bit too strong. Bob Mirguet,
defending Welterweight, lost to Bob Hogan
in the "Fight of the Night". The Abe Raff
Trophy was awarded to the boys. Dan Well-
ing, after defeating Lou Andolino in the
lightweight class, received the Hickok Tro-
phy as "Best Fighter of the Night".
Well applauded among the mite might
bouts was Sophomore Tony Ventura who
defeated joe Amorso. In the junior Heavy-
weight class, Ed Driscoll, a subsitute, sprang
a surprise by decisioning ,john Quirin.
All those who took part in the 1959
Mission Bouts deserve not only the gratitude
of the Missions but also of the spectators
for a night well spent.
