R it O God, Who desirest that all men should come to the know- ledge of the truth, And to this end didst enlighten the world with the wonderful learning of St. Thomas Aquinas Mercifully grant, that this Insti- tute dedicated to his name, May be a seat of wisdom to the young, A Mother of good counsel to the community, A blessing to all its benefactors. And as Thy Eternal Truth didst become flesh and dwell amongst us, So may that same truth become action in all Thy students, That they may think the things that are right, And under Thy merciful quidance perform the same. Through Christ Our Lord. Amen MMM Rhi N York THE BASILIAN FATHERS 5 5,1 CWA! f .SZ AJ. EDICATION l i 'F 1 ! 52' 1 N M I I Q' 4 Early last Autumn, the people of the Dio- cese of Rochester honored their Bishop as he celebrated a most memorable occasion, the Silver Anniversary of his Episcopal Con- secration as a Bishop. At the same time we celebrated another joyous event, his Golden Anniversary as a priest. Twenty years ago, James E. Kearney was appointed Bishop of Rochester. Immediately after his arrival, he began to spread the word of Christ to his people. He built schools on the elementary, secondary and college levels. Following the command of Christ to teach the word of God to all, our Bishop has accomplished what was once regarded a dream. Through his sacrifice and efforts, Rochester has become an example to the Catholic world. And so, in sincere appreciation of his work here in Rochester, in gratitude for his sacrifices for his people, and as a tribute to his many accomplishments, we, the students of Aquinas Institute, dedicate our 1958 Arete to James E. Kearney, Bishop of Rochester. 4 In the Spring of 1953, His Holiness Pope Pius XII appointed the Rt. Rev. Msgr. Lawrence B. Casey Titular Bishop of Cea and Auxiliary to the Bishop of Rochester. This was a fitting honor to be bestowed on a man who has served his Creator so faithfully. Ordained a priest in june 1930, he was soon appointed Vice-Chancel- lor. For a number of years he also acted as secretary first to Archbishop Mooney, and later to Bishop Kearney. The title of Right Reverend Mon- signor was conferred on him in 1947 when he was raised to the rank of Domestic Prelate. The year 1953 found him rector of Sacred Heart Ca- thedral. The following year he was consecrated Auxiliary Bishop of the Diocese of Rochester to aid Bishop Kearney in carrying out Christ's commandg "Go ye therefore and teach ye all nations." Since this time, we the people of Rochester have grown to realize the great honor given to us when Bishop Casey was appointed to this position, Upon entering Aquinas last September the students sensed a strange emptiness about the school. The school was as it had been except for one very outstanding feature. Sister Stella was no longer at Aquinas. Ever since Aquinas first opened its doors, Sister Stella has been a part of Aquinas. Our fathers remember her for she taught many of them. Sister did everything she could for Aquinas, she never ceased praying for her students. Spirit in Sister Stella's boys was always high as was proven every year when her homeroom gained honors. She never came to a football game or ever saw one of our basketball teams in action. Yet, she did more for them than anyone-she prayed for them. She prayed that they might have good weather and never suffer injuries but never for victory for that was God's choice. In grateful acknowledgement of all you have meant to Aquinas, we wish to pay tribute to you, Sister M. Stella, R.S.M. Principal My Dear Seniors: His Holiness, Pope Pius XI, has said that "Christian education is to cooperate with divine grace in forming the true and perfect Christian . . . For precisely this reason, Christian education takes in the whole aggregate of human life . . . in order to elevate, regulate, and perfect it, in accordance with the example and teaching of Christ." Your yearbook is the record of the four years you have spent here pursuing these goals, spiritual, academic, and athletic. More than a record, however, your Arete is a symbol of your life here for "arete" means that unity of virtue of mind and body to which the complete man of every age must aspire. That has been and must be your goal. IO FR. LEON G. HART, C.S.B. FR. JOHN T. CHERRY, C.S.B. FR. RAYMOND L. PRINCE, C.S.B. It is the 'Council that plans and guides student activities throughout the year. Football and basketball excursions have highlighted the activities of the Student Council this year. The Council was outstanding in its participation at the Inter-High Student Meetings. They have filled the Social Calendar of the students with many well-organized dances, one of the most notable being the Crystal Ball. Assemblies have pro- vided the students with a wide variety of entertainment. It can be truly said that this year's Student Council has done a superb job in directing student activities. 40 SENIOR REPRESENTATIVES Peter Donnelly William Howard Ronald Marang Left io righl: Samuel Rizzo, Ronald Maranq, William l-lowardl Absent Peter Donnelly. Miller to his juniors. FR. M. B. BIONDI, C.S.B. Direcior One of the purposes of education is to teach the students to think for themselves. The purposes of a religious education is to teach one to think according to religious principles, to live by them, and thus to attain eternal happiness. In a student's first year at Aquinas, he is acquainted with the life of Christ and given an explanation of the Creed. Next, he learns something of the history of the Church and receives a clearer view of the Mass and the Sacraments. The third year students are taught a simplified course in moral theology. As a final preparation for life he studies Apologetics-a rational basis of his faith that enables him to explain and defend it. Thus the religion course at Aquinas builds a firm foundation for the faith which will be a guide throughout life. An incident in the life of Christ is told by lvlr.Gallaql1er. - 5 my I -MQ 1 YY 5 . ,Q .5A:9.,,,g: ,,.. xM.xQg5Q .1 NMX,N , . WMU M I n iv 2 ' 'fy F 'J' X' . ETLINGER, C.S.B. Director History is the study by which we learn of man, his success and failure in the past. Since History often re- peats itself we can foresee events and learn how to meet them. Man learns to realize the great gifts of God through History, which helps him attain the knowledge and abil- ity to advance through the ages. In the History course here at Aquinas we are first taught the basic principles of citizenship. We learn these terition than the Christmas tree. principles through a study of the world and the people living in it-their problems and standards. After learning of our neighbors we study the history of America, the problems which we have faced and how we have over- come them. As a result, we are taught, to apply the knowledge to present day circumstances so that we may lay a firm foundation for the future history of mankind. Etlingefs American History Class. 76 ln World History Mr. Schieieri gets more at MATHEMATICS FR. C. P. DONOVAN, C.S.B. Director The goal of high school mathematics is two-fold, to develop in the student the ability to think mathematically, and to establish within him the fundamental skills which will enable him to go on to college. A well-rounded mathematics course, one that will permit the student to grow mathematically in each of his four years, is provided at Aquinas. For those students who wish to go on into higher mathematics such as calculus, a mathematics club has been formed. Therefore, we see that Aquinas has adequately fulfilled its duty of providing a mathematics program which more than pro- vides for the needs of its students. Fr, Carter illustrates a point in his Solid Geometry class. A student shows what he has learned in Fr, Dosefs Algebra. Fr. Boehm points out various geometric shapes eers proves that there can be un learning Geometry A rule is emphasized in Fr. Burns' mathematics class by means ot an example. , l 58 3 SM .. Director The Language Department at Aquinas aims to achieve a healthy balance between the traditional, grammatical ap- proach to languages and the modern methods which seek to provide the student with reasonable Huency in speaking a language. Through languages the student is introduced to literary masterpieces of various nations. An artistic sensitivity and a power of critical judgement are developed. A study of the efforts which foreign nations have made toward the solution of the problems of human destiny and the contri- bution they have made to the embellishment of human exist- ence should enrich the experience of the student. It makes him realize that all men, by their artistic creativity, are images of the one creative God. 39" A Elementary Greek lS explained by Mr. Schreiner Mrs. Roslca and her advanced French students, Fr. Mathematical skills Diredor and ability to approach and to converse with people are coupled with a sense of understanding of human needs and desires. Through Business courses many people have found their place in the world. A study in concentration. LIBRARY FR. J. R. WHITLEY, C.S.B. Librarian The library is a vital part of the Aquinas edu- cational program. It attempts not only to imple- ment and extend class instruction by stimulating study and research, but also to supply such recrea- tional reading material as will foster a love for n E A good books and cultural reading generally. James Kraus and friends tind a quiet spot in the Library tor study. 80 e seniors are given a principle in ea th by Mr, Basile. mlb :nw HEALTH MR. LOUIS BASILE Director As well as developing our minds, we have the duty of developing and strengthening our bodies and of keeping them in good health. To enjoy good health one must become mentally, physically and socially well adjusted to life. Through our daily studies we advance both mentally and socially, but it is the job of the Health Department to furnish a guide for physical development. The study of Art is the inalienable concern of man and is as much a part of his education as any of the marks that are advanced as evidence of edu- cation in general. The variety of courses offered at Aquinas is regulated by the needs of the studentsg in addition to the general course designed for all, there are more profound and exacting courses for those who wish to cultivate the virtue of Art more seriously. MISSIDNS The outstanding spirit of the Aquinas Student for the Missions is proven each year by the overwhelming support which they give the Missions spiritually and financially. This year a new spiritual activity was initiated. Each homeroom was given the name of a missionary for whom it would offer it's prayers that his work in the Mission Held be successful. Also, the daily Mission Mass was extended to continue throughout the entire school year. These activities along with our remarkable financial support, through homeroom contributions and the annual Mission Bouts, have given us a position in the Missions to be envied by all. The "St. Genesius Club," our dramatics club at Aquinas, must be congratulated for their splendid work in doing this task. The members of the club take very seriously their Part in providing entertainment for the students. Long hours of rehearsing go into every one of their perform- ances. These hours of practice are never in vain though, because a professional-type performance teaches the members to work together and gives them an apprecia- tion of good clean entertainment. With this in mind, it is obvious that the members of the St. Genesius Club along with their directors, Father Cullen and Father Whitley, deserve a great deal of credit for their part in the cultural training of Aquinas students. in Peter Mahler studles a seed catalogue in a scene from "Tea House of flue August Moon." Football practices and games bring new experiences to young athletes. Participation in the sound football program at Aquinas provides the teaching of cooperation and competition. Playing hard and playing to win can help build character. Learning to give and to take, experiencing defeat without grumbling, and accepting victory without gloating, makes the boy a better athlete. Good sportsmanship comes when rules are obeyed. On the football field athletic competition can be a wholesome equal- izer. Individuals on the playing field are judged by what they can do. We believe that football teaches the values of the democratic process and of fair play. We believe that football aids in teaching goodness, discipline and knowledge.
