DEDICATI
"Bal only one fhing is necessary: and Mary has chosen for
herself +he best pari of all, +ha+ which shall never be laken
away from her." Luke H42
To surrender one's goods is painful. To surrender
oneself is the perfection of love.
Our Sisters have made that sacrifice-a clean
oblatlon of themselves-a perfect act of love.
Because of their sacrifice for us, we sincerely and
gratefully dedicate our l956 Arete to our beloved
Sisters, past and present, faculty members of
Aquinas Institute.

Man ......, The noblesT oT earTh's creaTures, was made unTo The
image oT God. His immorTal soul reTlecTs The resplendenT glory of
his Maker. IT Tollows ThereTore ThaT our True perTecTion and happi-
ness can only be aTTained in Tilial communion wiTh The Sovereign
DeiTy. However, because oT The sin oT our TirsT parenTs, man losT his
righT To heaven and was senTenced To earn his bread by The sweaT
oT his brow. BuT AlmighTy God did noT abandon His ill-TaTed crea-
Tures and in His inTiniTe mercy senT His only-begoTTen Son, Jesus
ChrisT, Who by His Passion and DeaTh on The Cross, aToned Tor The
sin oT Adam.
ThereTore man, exiled Trom His CreaTor, once again seelcs
perTecTion. To guide man in his guesT, The CreaTor has showered The
earTh wiTh reminders of his loTTy goal. Among These are BeauTy, TruTh,
Discipline and Friendship.
ln our CaTholic educaTion here aT Aquinas, These gualiTies are in-
corporaTed in our school liTe-curricular and exTra-curricular acTivi-
Ties. BeauTy, Tor insTance, is in-
carnaTe in such pursuiTs as ArT,
modern and ancienT languages
and Music. TruTh is embodied in
such subiecTs as Religion, MaTh-
emaTics, and The Sciences. We
Tind Discipline in aThleTics and
Friendship in our social acTivi-

My dear Seniors-
ln The Divine Decision, "LeT us make man
To Our Image and l.ikeness," we Tind The basis
Tor CaTholic EducaTion. Any sysTem of edu-
caTion ThaT reckons noT wiTh These words oT
Genesis is shallow.
You are like To God because you possess
an inTellecT ThaT can know TruTh, and a will
ThaT can love The good. To Train your in-
TellecT alone, and neglecT your will's capac-
iTy Tor goodness would be To misundersTand
you as a creaTure made To God's image.
CaTholic educaTors know whaT man is: iT is
impossible To divide him. To consider him buT
an inTellecT is an aTTempT aT such a division
l-le musT be wholly educaTed, boTh inTellecT
and will, or he is badly educaTed.
Here aT Aquinas you have received an
educaTion which embraces The whole man.
AThleTics have sTrengThened your bodies:
academic subiecTs and your religion have
sTrengThened your soul so ThaT you may learn
To use These giTTs of inTellecT and will To know
Him Who is The Good.
The moTTo oT The Basilian FaThers, "Teach
me Goodness, Discipline, and Knowledge,"
does noT beliTTle knowledge by placing iT lasT.
ln our wish ThaT you excell in all Three, we
sTress Goodness, Tor Goodness has a Disci-
pline and Knowledge all iTs own.

"The end oT religion is Tilial communion wiTh God,
in which we honor and revere l-lim as our supreme
Lord, love l-lim as our FaTher, and Tind in ThaT reverenT
service, our True perTecTion and happiness." Un-
doubTedly iT would be impossible To achieve This end,
if religion were TreaTed merely in The classroom as a
secular subiecT. Accordingly, Chrislrian DocTrine aT
Aquinas is much more Than ThaTg iT is a living TaiTh-
an inTimaTe parT in all sTudenT acTiviTies. Four years
of sTudy and pracTise prepare The sTudenT Tor adulT-

Aquinas alilords iTs sTudenTs a varieTy oT religious

ART
"Beauty is at once the ullimale principle and the
highest aim of Art." I+ is the most changeable and
yet changeless lype ol beauty which man has here-
roiore conceived.
In its broader meaning, Art has become some-
what less exclusive and has come lo include any
and all pursuils which appeal To the aeslheiic Tastes
of mankind. However, in its lrue sense, Arr em-
braces only those human represenlalions, which, by
reason of their inlrinsic order oi design, have
achieved recognition among the peoples of The
world.
Father Cullen has attempted lo introduce his
pupils in Basic Arr and Arr ll +o lhe inrricacies of
ar+is+ic expression which musl characlerize each one
who desires +o understand more clearly The nalure
of Art itself. These qualities include: neafness of
line and worlc, appreciation of the lechniques in-
volved in +he Graphic Arts, both artistically and
praclically, abililry lo express oneself rhrough visual
arts and perseverance in complelion of lhe final
study. We can feel a great pride in Jrhe degree ro
which the director has succeeded in Jrhe reaIiza+ion

MOTHER'S CLUB
For many years now, the Aquinas Mothers' Club has been
one ot the most popular, as well as beneticial, organizations in
our school. Meeting monthly, the club not only attords the
mothers an opportunity ot discussing common problems with
other mothers, but also carries on an extensive tund raising
program. Activities tor this purpose are many, but ot these the
Fashion Show and the Card party are the most outstanding.
Spiritually, the club annually sponsors a day ot recollection
and the Mothers and Sons Communion brealctast.
The untiring services ot Father Fullerton and the otticers
along with the Cooperation ot every member has earned the
deepest respect and appreciation ot the Aquinas student.

The year l955 also saw lhe inauguralion of a new campaign
al Aquinas. ln place of The annual magazine drive, every sludenl
was asked To sell liclcels lo lhe Aquinas loolball games. Inspired
by Falher O'Reilly, The sludenl body conquered overwhelming
odds lo sell a speclacular lolal ol Sl3.302 in loolball liclcels.
This is nowhere near lhe sum lhe school would have sold had
il' nor been for such obslacles as lhe World Series and poor
wealher.
And lhus, allhough our lolal fell shorl ol lhe desired goal,
fhe drive was neverlheless a success and an inspiralional display
of lhe greal Aquinas "sales abilily".

STUDENT
COUNCIL
Selt government is the true essence ot American
Democracy. With this in mind, it is only titting that
many ot the important decisions concerning the
school be made by the elected representatives ot
the students themselves.
The Student Council at Aquinas is composed ot
tour representatives trom each ot the tour classes
and the tour Senior Class otticers, who direct the
operations ot the Council.
Seniors suggest.
STUDENT COUNCIL REPRESENTATIVES
Richard Corbett, Herbert Lettau, john Parrinello,
Gary Nelson.
Besides representing the students, the Council
also sponsors many ot the dances and social events.
lt is also their taslc to subsidize the various clubs
and organizations in the school. Also instituted this
year is the suggestion box trom which the Council
hopes more directly to learn ot the trend ot student
opinion.
Much credit is due these boys who tirmly be-
lieve that "a public ottice is a public trust".
