Democracy is the government by the people collectively, by elected representatives. AtAquinas the Student Council is the expression ofthe demo- cratic spirit since its members, elected by the students, voice student opinion. Through this Council the students express their views on any part of school life. just as a nation will be better governed if the citizens make use of this privilege, so too the life of a school will be improved if its students take advantage of this prerogative. Since student government was set up at Aquinas, the Student Council has supervised and promoted all student activities Standing QLeft to Rxgbtj Charles Raetz Donald Yeckel john Pietropaoli John Sayre Charles Swalbach Don Finewood Maury Ryan Raymond Knittel William Fackelman Seated Michael Fmigan Lawrence Mungovan Charles Hall james Gmg Robert Farrell Robert O Halloran . .. : , , , . . . ., , ' vc . 1 9 1 . - -' l Y , Y Y , 24 .-914 JAMES GING CHARLES HALL Presulent Vice President MICHAEL FINIGAN ROBERT O HALLORAN Secretary Treasurer THE SE IIJH EL S5 1950 25 rf"- joseph R Acker James J Adams james -I Aha 0 jimmy zm Spanlsh Club 4 Stage Servlce Club 2 Stage 4 Intramural Basketball 1 Crew 4 Arete Staff 4 History Glee Club 3 4 Clu 4 Art Club 4 Poster Club CPresj 4 Chemtstry Club 4 Wayne D Alexander Frltz F Amlco Angelo P Andrese Rube Fritz Andy Intramural Sports 1 2 Mxsston Leader 2 3 4 Chess Club Archery M1ss1onLeader2 Glee Club 3 4 Italtan Club Bowlmg Club Club 2 3 4 Llturglcal French Club Perpetual Cholr Varsxty Football Rosary 2 3 4 Freshman Foot bal 1 Robertj Bagne john W Baker Bo jack Band 1 2 3 4 Art Club Band 1 2 4 Arete 4 Maroon and Whnte 4 Camera Club 2 Physlcs Club 3 Spanish Club 4 Chess Club 3 4 Intra mural Baseball 1 3 Frankj Baleno jr Frank Mlsslon Bouts 1 2 Intramural Sports Bowlmg Team 2 3 4 Maroon and Wh1te4 Ska Club 3 4 26 Edward D Ahonen Buddy Freshman Football Bas ketball Baseball R serve Football Basket ball Varsity Football 3 4 Mxsslon Bouts 2 3 4 Chess Club 2 Lucas j Antropolx oe Intramural Basketball Football Baseball Bowl mg Club 2 Italnan Club 3 4 Physncs Club 3 Alphonse J Alalmo Intramural Basketball 1 2 Band 1 George H Aspenlenter George Bowlmg Club 1 2 Glee Club 3 Chess Club 2 Intramural Baseball 1 2 3 Intramural Basketball Edward N Barrett Robert B Bartoszewlcz Bart Model Axrplane Club fPresj 1 4 Chess Club 1 2 Camera C ub CTreasD 2 4 Satlmg Club 2 Glee Club 3 4 Huntmg and Fnshlng Club Chemnstry Club 4 CLASS UF if 5 , F I 2 ' r 9 ,Leif ' 'QQ E3 5 ,gy .pg ' j' Al ' 9 Q : , - , Q , . , Q C- Q . b 9 : I 9 - . 5 Z , . 5 y , 3 l 1 1 I Q 1 2 3 , Q 9 9 U , 9 - 4 1 , , Q Q 'Q 7 v Z - 1 Z - 5 , , 4 - 213- l . 6. There were a series of carefully planned instructions given by Rev. Patrick Gorman, C.S.B., of St. Michael's College, Toronto. Ample time to think was allotted. Above all there was silence-a real rest, a relief, a necessity The General Confession, Mass and Communion, Benedtctlon, Blessing and the perpetual presence of the Prince of Peace found ew eryone in a mood rarely experienced before That retreat rebuilt the spent energies of our souls and gave them the power to go ahead, strengthened and refreshed for the remainder of our life at Aquinas and the decisive years to come The inevitable reaction to such an interim of peace can t be anything short of lonelt ness for the Divine Presence tn which we lived for those few days and the wish that we could kneel again and go on asking for guidance and courage and peace that we had so gloriously tasted Waiting to go to Confession II S5 CLefi to Rrgbtj Tap Rau Donald Muench james Cocllova Paul Freemesser john Schuler jo seph Battle Maddie Row Walter Rybackl Rlchard Salamone Edward Woytas Rtchard Sullx van john F1tzMorr1s Thomas Moonan Botlnm Row Anthony Valente Donald Makely Ray mond Schattmnller Donald Schneider Patrick Buttarazzl Richard Schnender Q Vg' all 'PQ Q-wr x Tap Row john Dallor Lawrence Dolan Damel Doran ohn Reardon Lawrence Corcoran Mzddle Row Andrew Schwmd, john Palvmo Martln Koester er john Mancme Robert Klens ley Robert MacDonald Carl Lamendola Boltom Row Walter Bull Davnd Dietz Clarence Weeks Gerald Paradles john Wing john Gramaker Absen tees joseph Mlller, Robert O Hara ff of we HUMEHUIJM 323 Moderalor Sr. M. In order to accomplish these aims the mem- bers of our Sodality attend weekly spiritual meet- ings which consist of a spiritual talk by the Director, the Litany of the Blessed Virgin, and Benediction. Members are required daily to re- cite the rosary, do some spiritual reading, make a visit to the Blessed Sacrament, and frequently to attend Mass and receive Holy Communion. Since their own personal sanctification is not their sole aim, members of the Sodality have engaged in various projects. At the beginning of the school year we began the Perpetual Rosary. The entire student body participated in the official opening ceremony by reciting the Rosary. Some 440 students took part in the Perpetual Rosary taking their turns recit- ing the Rosary on every school day in the chapel. Another project in which the Sodality took an active part was the Daily Mass. Frequent, and even daily Communion was encouraged, and many students responded generously. We who cherish a deep devotion for Mary, Queen of Aquinas, have confidence that our en- deavors have borne rich fruit during the past year, and we hope that Sodalists in future years will work earnestly to spread devotion for Our. Blessed Lady among all the students of Aquinas. Seated: Father Onorato Under the guiding hand of Father Hugh Haffey, C.S.B.. an organization was formed called the Aquinas Men's Club. It numbered within its ranks fathers of students, alumni, and friends of Aquinas. About a thousand mem- bers were enrolled in 1947. A constitution was drawn up in that year and the organization began to function .... In the few years of its existence there have been a number of outstanding men at the helm of this body. We might mention such ones as joseph Myler, john Morton, john judge, Dr. joseph Guzzetta, Charles Gertner, john jar- dine, Donald Dailey, john Hayes, and Elmer Fairchild. A host of others, too numerous to mention, have been very active in the formation and growth of this group .... Since 1947, the oiiicers of the organization have invited notable speakers to appear before the group not only for entertainment but also for intellectual benefit .... To single out any one committee, does not seem fair, but we think all will agree that mention be made of the magnifi- cent help that the Sports Committee, under the leadership of Charles Mirguet, has been in promotion of the Athletic Program. Each year they have provided the Football Team with a Victory Dinner that was an eventful civic affair .... This year the Aquinas Men attempted something new. Some members volunteered to offer the public an unusual piece of entertainment in the form of a Minstrel Show. This proved very popular and was considered a great success .... The presiding officers now are james Bell, Presidentgjames hickey, Vice-Presidentgj. Allen Doyle, Secretaryg Frank Donnelly, Treasurerg and Father Slattery, Faculty Advisor. The success of the campaign surpassed everyone's wildest expectations. The plan used was origi- nated by the Curtis Circulation Company. By means of this plan and the collaboration of several patrons, the students were able to present a grand gift to the school .... The quota was set at 341000, which meant that each homeroom had a 31,000 quota. This amount was considered by many as impossible to reach but not only was it reached but sur- passed to the extent of 350 000 The whole campaign was a whirlwind alfair Each day at 2 30 a short assembly was held at which the day s prizes were distributed and a short skit was presented by a homeroom The administration wishes to express its appreciation to those who went out and worked for the success of the campaign to those who spent many long hours contributing time and energy to those concerns which donated prizes and to the Mothers Club many of whose members spent hours checking the subscrip tions and counting the returns Aquinas has set an all time sales record for such a campaign in the entire nation .F 4 Curtis officials Mr Gerald Gersbach and Mr Al Green with Father Cullmane and Father Malone Father Malone congratulates a prize winner at one of the assemblies Homeroom 314 the top room in the school with a total of S3 365 1 30 AL PRUSH 'Vr The best sellers among the Frosh Zag fin mf ,nu LET 5 Father Prmce Mr McCarthy and Father ORe1lly examme the Fresh man Homeroom totals Mnke Fxmgan arouses some Pep at one of the assemblnes Snster Gregory takes the cake 151 Homeroom 102 A the top Freshman Homeroom Mothers Club members honored at a banquet for lhexr work xn the Magazme Drxve li 'S The Guests of Honor at the closmg assembly Curtis otfncnals present a trophy to Pete Black wood the hlgh salesman of the Drxve Two students examine the Magazine Pete Blackwood and the first prxze Sales scoreboard 132 1 Y .'!1,,L, V .V - 4.3, - ' lf by lx Q X ,Q ' Q if ,!Af!
