The musicial background for solo and duet parts was played by a light ensemble, while the entire orchestra assisted in full chorus scenes. As in previous years the annual formal concert was held in May. This as customary was a joint participation of orchestra and choruses together with vocal and instrumental solos. Num- bers in the orchestras collection were "Vienna in l9l 3" by Bain- bridge, "E.mperor 'Waltz," by the "Waltz King," Johann Strauss, Beethoven's "Fifth Symphony," "Venetian Carnival" and "Scarlet Mask" by Zamecnik, "Gipsy Baron Qverturen by Strauss, Hwleadowlandsn by lsaac, "La Belle France" by Guion, and 'isinfoniettau by Schubert. "Something new" was added in the past year in the forma- tion of the orchestra into a formal organization. Officers elected were President Sylvester Strasser and Secretary .Ioan Rathburn. The first dance sponsored by the Aquinas orchestra was carried out in the form of the novel "Bootless Ball" which proved a suc- cess. Proceeds were used for music for the Aquinas Music de- partment. Along with the other additions came the introduction of student directors. Thus. students realized the responsibility of the other side of the baton, its importance, and the necessity to obey its every fluctuation. i 9 0 E9 'W 9 A Sister M. A very unusual presentation marked the spring concert. For the tirst time. the chorus and band were united to blend their musical tone. The band accompanied the singing group which included seniors, juniors. and sophomores in 'tCheerio" by Goldman, "Stars and Stripes Forever" by Sousa. "Come to the Fair' by Martin. and "Host of Youth" by Guentzel. Band selections included "His Honor." a march by Fillmore, and "Marche Courageous" by Htilmes. AF 5,5- Blugold Warriors Aquinas 26, McDonell 0. Taking advantage of McDonell's weaknesses, espe- cially on defensive, the Blugold eleven provided a game of thrills as they would start on a downfield march. Early in the first quarter Charlie Schmikla tallied on a short pass from Beranek after a hard drive by Beranek, Dayton and Klein who alternated in carrying the pigskin toward the goal line. Each of the follow- ing quarters also found the Aquinas men treading for another touchdown by using reverses and plunges to a great extent. Art Klein, forcing his way through the center from close to the double line, was given credit for the three scores. Arnie Stoltz booted two extra points to round out the scoring. Aided by three McDonell fumbles and two intercepted passes the Blugolds ended their season opener with a 26-0 victory. ' ' Logan 13. Aquinas 7. Although outplaying their rivals throughout the en- tire second half the Aquinas Blugolds found trouble equaling the 13 points scored by the Logan Rangers during the first half of the game. When Aquinas fumbled on the 25 the Rangers tallied their first touchdown, the only first quarter scoring. After an exchange of punts the Logan eleven started a second quarter drive from mid-field and gained five to ten yards at a time ending in a touchdown. The second half found the Aquinas boys driving very hard and they moved down to the Logan 23 yard line. Sonny Beranek faded back and flung a long pass to Charlie Schmikla who crossed the stripes to hit pay dirt. Stoltz' place-kick was good to bring the score 13-7. Aquinas threatened to score several times but was held back until the final whistle blew. Edgewood 41, Aquinas 6. Handicapped considerably by the injuries of several valuable regulars, the Aquinas team suffered at the hands of Edgewood on Madison's Breese Stevens field. Held to a score- less deadlock in the first quarter, Edgewood struck quickly for three touchdowns and a halftime lead of 21-0 shortly after the second quarter opened. Beranek's pass to Jim Smith in the third quarter pro- vided the only Blugold score but was matched by a Madison tally in the same period. Edgewood added two more for a score of 41-6. .
