Remember as "Green Freshiesh how we learned by heart the words of the Loyalty
Song. Its association recalls the night we sang it when with shaky step and shakier
knees we made that Hrst bow to Aquinas society. The next day we posed under the
stately poplars which accented our height and gave us a grown-up feeling and 21 security
that we were on the "in" of Aquinas. It wasn't just a song but a sort of doctrine that
followed us through our school life. Each assembly began with it and its poignant
expressions caused the seniors to use it as th ' ' '
for the TAQUIN OF 317.

The slow march, with its practiced step adds joy and yet a sort of leaden
feeling as each girl takes a step away from the school of her dreams and
anticipates the happiness of receiving the diploma of her achievement. Wend-
ing through the path in her leaf-shadowed gown thoughts of the strain "Sing
girls along the path of life" - brings a smile as each Aquinite hopes for
a rosy future. - Edwardine Gunterberg

Seniors of Room 202 listen intentively while Ella Knopf explains the point for the
day. A new thought is awakened, a saintly model is suggested and a religious practice
is formulated. A new day begins for the Aquinite and a new hope for her individual
betterment rallies her to bind herself more closely to her Maker.
Wlmen weighty problems of an ethical nature are too far reaching and difncult, the
Aquinite can turn to the spiritual director of Aquinas, Reverend Joseph Hedderman,
who weekly visits each religion class and freely dispenses sacerdotal wisdom, The
problems and pitfalls of marriage he explains so that she may be guided in her choice
and may make her marriage a blessing toward a future happiness.

lfasluons, gym news, and editorials are written by these reporters and staff members. Feature
.irticles and news items seem to fall into the hands of these observant girls. They are the "back
bone" of the press for when the editors "call" the reporters are always ready to produce. Several
hours are spent after school in choosing the "right selections to please the readers."
A round table discussion on the Alunior Issue of "The Aquinas." Wlmat to feature, where to
ferret the news. the lines per article and other major problems fall upon this class. Next year pl,

Taquin came to life Il second year. With it are fond memories of life at
Aquinas in 1946-47. Its tale is not just a story but a sort of autobiographical
sketch of Aquinas life. Its composition is the work of students telling their
story of hopes, dreams and ambitions. The Press hopes it will add a little
beauty to a sordid world.

Q4 feeaume of llze Choral year
The Aquinas Choral Club contributes much beauty to the life of Aquinas.
"As a thing of beauty is a joy forever," "The singing girls" of the school hold
their audience in rapt attention as they chant the Benediction hymns of praise,
particularly the Panis Angelicus.
Christmas comes "and the angels sing." A Christmas message, a Hal-
lelujah chorus rings praise to God by choral girls on tiers in the auditorium.
'Mid snow and ice and chilly north winds they hnd their way to the suffering
sheep of His flock in hospitals throughout the city. As always, our girls led
in the choral festival with the rating, "excellent"
The operetta is their special concern in which they enacted a jewel of
pageantry. The operetta, "The jewels of the Desert," had a double cast, the
second of which is pictured. The cast of characters is as follows:
Abdullah ......,,.,. . ................... Rita Nessinger, Catherine Ffrench
Professor Lythe ....., ......... M ary Catherine Donoghue, Patricia McHugh
Nana ....,...r,,..,i .................. P atricia Considine, Frances Moran
Caesar ,,,,r.,r,.... ...................................,............ A lice Quinnan
Miss Lythe .,,..,, , .... ,... D onna O'Beirne, Helen Ann McGovern
Betty ,......,.. , .......,... ........ M arie Campbell, Peggy Martin
Cakieall .,.,.....,,,,,....,,. ............................... P eggy Winterheld

Cheeko r,...,..,...,,,,.,,.,. ........... J oan Schneider, Barbara Gavin
First Arab ,,,,,,, ,, ...,,,............,............... Eileen Mintefering
Benarulah ........ .......... Be tty McClain, Peggy Pfordresher
The culmination of a successful year comes with the eighth annual music
festival for all Catholic high schools of the Archdiocese, as they join four
hundred voices as one.

The Sanctuary is dark,
But for a glowing light of red.
And there it is that thoughts and
And hopes and prayers are bred.
For as creation is an art
And life itself a grace,
It pleases me to sit beside
The Maker of our race.
Close to the sacred vigil light
In quiet awe I sit,
ralia
dreams
Mystically, almost zveirdly,
The God of H eav'n is there.
And I am here beside Him
And His love is everywhere.
Nor need one word be uttered.
Nor need a breath he spent,
For understanding builds its bridge
Of mental jirmament.
I cannot sit beside my God
And of thanks speak no word.
And solitude surrounds the room, For even though no lips should ope
And makes a tomb of it. My heartfelt thanks is heard.
But for the burning candle The gratitude that fills my frame
Which casts its flickers here. Is like unto a stream
Peacefully quiet is this place, Which swells into a demon tide
And tranquil and austere. To swamp the land, 'Twould seem
But here I find a quiet hand
To calm the rising tide.
And as before, the waters,
By the Maher's ivill, abide.
This, not so humble, heart I have
I prostrate 'neath Your eyes,
To thank You for the blessing
Of my earthly paradise.
RIGHT REVEREND GEORGE A. PARKER
