Ponte Football Although the football team had a few bumpy spots, the Varsity team did very well this year. With excellent leaders like Paul Fournier and Glenn Benevides how could the team do badly? However, the most memorable mo- ment the team shared was when they played against Manchester. The boys gave the best they could do and really participated. The peaks of their season were the times they played Middleboro and Manchester and soundly defeated each team. Dennis Silvia, John Shar- iand, Mike Brown and Glen Johnson are to be congratula- ted for the most improvement of any team member. Mr. Piasecki is very optimistic about next year ' s team. He has many of the juniors trained and ready for an outstand- ing year. Go Lakers! Field Hockey The Field Hockey team had a fantastic season this year going undefeat- ed in the league. The whole team agreed the peak of their season was when they defeated the Somerset team. Many of the players showed much improvement and leadership especially, Lee Maguire and Yvonne Erickson. Best all around player definitely goes to Leslie Wood. There is one most memorable moment the team will never forget — that is when Mrs. Tinsley said these words to her team, " I have never enjoyed working with a team as much as you kids. I am so proud of you, I love you kids! " I II % Cross Country Although Cross Country isn ' t as popular as base- ball or football. It still has its fans. Mr. Dawson, coach of the Cross Coun- try team, was thrilled when the team won the All League Meet. Mr. Daw- son Believes this win was the team ' s most memorable time togeth- er. The All League Meet was also the team ' s peak of the season. Mr. Dawson hopes that many students go out for Cross Country next year. The players he feels im- proved the most this year are Paul Westgate and Mike Dunham. Also, two people who displayed extreme lead- ership are Melissa Lawrence and Doug Broadbent. Lastly, Mr. Dawson feels that the team was successful because they had spirit and togetherness. Girls Basketball f ' " M 1 t-- Ah — H i The girls basketball team ' x K| had a fine season this ' IFj year. They clinched the l [ Mayflower League Title by defeating Norton in Miaa H H an excellant played H game. The score was an impressive 70-50 as the Hjj H Laker girls proved their M superb ability. The girls led by co-captains Karen Allerdt and Voncia Costa always showed good team effort and always had a well-balanced score. The Seniors making up the majority of the squad capped off their high school career on a strong note winning the Mayflower crown all four years. Swimming bent and Dan Hopkins I I have broken several rec- I m !ords that they them- I selves have set in pre- I vious years. Scott Gar- LaaBBHaaBBaBaHBHBHiH HH vey ' s unique skill for his diving ability has enabled him to become the head diver on this year ' s team. Melissa Lawrence, a sophomore, has shown much improvement over the three years she had been on the team. She has set several school records. Her unique skills have been a great help to the team. Boys Basketball This year ' s team has shown much im- provement with the help of two seniors- Captain Steve La- Chapelle and Billy Messier. Also show- ing much improve- ment were juniors i b bbibhmbbmmi ™ Bill Ripley with his rebound skills, and Bob Clarke, becom- ing high scorer for the team. A big help to the team was a new comer-Lance Livesly with his defensive skills. The Lakers have won 14 games and lost only 1 for the season. The team ' s most memorable moment was winning the League Championship. i Softball The Varsity Softball team, as usual, ended with a successful year. Last year, the team won 22 games without a loss. Mr. Looney, the coach of the Varsity Softball team, had many great things to say about the team. One of the most memorable moments the team g ggg gggg gggggggggg g ig shared was when they had their annual supper date. All the girls looked beautiful. In fact, Mr. Looney was quoted as saying, " Most people think of our girls as atheletes which they are, but more so, they are beautiful young ladies. " Then he said that the most improved player was Leslie Wood and the two girls with the most leadership were Joan Allison and Sue Rezendes. Coach Looney is very optimistic about next year ' s Softball team. He is not, however looking forward to the end, when 9 terrific, talented girls will be graduating. Baseball Mr. Tinsley, coach of the Varsity Baseball team, was very impressed with the 1978 team. He said that the one thing that sticks out in his mind is the game they played against Norton, the team that won the Eastern Mass. Championship. Ap- ponequet won 1-0 over these champs. Coach Tinsley added that the peak of the baseball sea- son was towards the end when they tied Norton, while saving their record of 15-1. Last year, three players demonstrated improved talents: Jim Davis, Scott Garvey and Paul Donegan. With these three players and many new ones going out for the team in ' 79, Coach Tinsley is extremely optimistic about the coming season. 109 Tennis The Tennis Team, just a few years old, is getting more popular every year. Mr. Robidoux, the coach of the Tennis Team said the team is doing terrific. Although a few players like Arthur Bethea, Jim Gurney, and Richard Burke graduated last year, Mr. Robidoux feels he has some play- ers that will keep up the same pace as last year and maybe even better it. Some of the players that will be playing this spring are Ed Boyer, Mike Roberts, Mike Brown, and a couple of freshmen. The girls are all fantas- tic tennis players. The teams most memorable moment was when they came close to defeating Bishop Connolly (State Champs). The hardest team they played against was the New Bedford High Tennis Team. Jim Gurney dis- played the most sportsmanship. Lastly, Mr. Robidoux would like more students to go out for the tennis team in the years to come. Mr. Dias, coach of the Apponequet track team, mostly had some good news to share with us. He said that many of the players had improved tre- mendously during the season. Coach Dias states that Michael Gross improved in throwing the shotput and Phil Muir im- mi m m proved in throwing the javalin by 25 feet. In dis- cus throwing, John Pi- card improved 13 feet. Mr. Dias is going to make a lot of im- provements for the long season. One thing he ' d like to do is have more kids good at one or two track sports instead of having just one or two displaying talent in many of the events. Also, he is coordinating a program with the Middle School to get young boys ready for the track team when they enter the High School. So the future of the track team is very hopeful. Golf The Golf Team, a fairly new team at Appone- quet. Improved tremen- dously last spring. They won the championship title in the league which was their season ' s peak and the most memor- able moment the Team shared. The most im- proved players were Scott Holmes. Mike Smith, and Jeff Mello. The players demonstrat- ing the most leadership were Bob Barlow, Scott Holmes, and Paul Aitken. Coach Homen is cautiously optimistic for the 1979 season because of the loss of some fantastic players - Kevin Belkin, and Kenny Aitken. He feels that if more students go out for Golf, the team has a good chance of repeating the same title and becoming stronger and better. Our Town The 1979 Polarion staff was marked by involved and devoted seniors who, hopefully, have suc- ceeded in creating a complete and accurate pic- ture of the 78-79 Apponequet experience. It is the hope of the staff that you, the reader, will not think that we have taken an easy ap- proach to this yearbook but will realize that we have taken an honest one.
