APPLETON HICH SCHOOL
Mt' Keller
If Professor Keller could hear at thrs trme the rnnumerable expressrons of re
gret vorced on every hand over hrs resrgnatron as the prrncrpal of our hrgh school
I am sure he would haue ample cause to feel that hrs work of eleven years rn thrs
communrty rs nerther unapprecrated nor underestrmated and rt must be a source
of prrde and pleasure to hrm to know that drsapproxal of hrs contemplated de
parture from Appleton rs the strongest among those who are most famrlrar wrth
hrm and hrs constructne work here Thrs group rncludes the great majorrty of
parents whose chrldren have been erved by hrm rn whrch group the wrrter rs
fortunate and pleased to count hrmself
It has been a noteworthy feature of Nlr Keller s servrce that he has been not
srmply an educator but a character burlder A man of the hrghest rdeals f
splendrd moral courage and clear wrsron he has through the round of petty de
tarls that encompass a professronal teachers darly task nerer once lost srght of
the marn objectlves and hrs burldrng among our boys and grrls has been rn the
brggest broadest way for permanence Hundreds of Appleton parents are
to be congratulated rn havrng had therr chrldren under hrs tutelage We deeplr
deplore hrs departure and shall mrss hrm greatly It rs but a doubtful consola
tron that our loss rs Waukegan s garn
THE FATHFR OF Two Hrcrr Scrroor. STUDENTS
Mr Keller
The news that our beloved prrncrpal had accepted the prrncrpalshrp of the
Waukegan Townshrp Hrgh School was a great surprrse to the student body as
well as to all the crtrzens of the communrty
Mr Keller has establrshed hrmself rn a posrtron w here he rs greatly loved and
respected by all hrs students Hrs hrgh moral prrncrples have meant much to us
rn the formatron of our character and hrs farrness has establrshed a deep and
lastrng rmpressron rn the mrnds of all who have dealt wrth hrm Appleton
Hrgh School has garned a reputatron throughout the state for rts school sprrrt
The hne sprrrt and farr play of our athletrc teams wrlr never be forgotten by the
schools wrth w hom we have played We are also leaders rn scholastrc lrterary
dramatrc and forensrc helds Our success rn these actrvrtres IS due to Vlr Keller
organrzrng abrlrty and the hne sprrrt whrch he has rnfused rn hrs students
It rs rmpossrble for us to realrze how much Nlr Keller wrll be mrssed as rt rs
drfhcult for us to thrnk of A H S wrthout hrm but we well know that the ef
fects of hrs work here wrll alwavs be felt by the students of our Alma Mater
The best w rshes of the student body go wrth Mr Keller and hrs famrly to hrs
new held of serwrce A STLDENT

years Three major proofs of chool pirit were considered scholastic record
busme s obligations and conduct To decide the conduct record of each class
teachers handed in the names of nd widuals who had been particularly trouble
ome and those whose efforts had been especially praiseworthy These merit
and demerit marks e tabhshed the class record The juniors had the distinction
of having the fewet demerits also the fewest merits Flhe seniors were hrst in
both Th sophomores made 1 record by having the highest percentage of paid
class dues
The final ranking of the classes was Seniors juniors sophomores fresh
men To the eniors went the cup and the glory Dorothy Lymer had the
honor of recening the most individual merits and she accepted the cup for her
class The seniors hope to lean the cup as bright and shining as thev found it
an emblem of A H S s greatest glory
UITIOI' Red Cross
Like its big sister the Senior Red Cross the unior Red Cross has not less
berships was mide which resulted mo' atisfactorilv The senior and iunior
class came out with hundred per cent m mberships while the other two made ex
cellent records All the money from these memberships does not belong to us
certain proportion is turned oxer to the nation rl organization But we still lm ad
funds enough to do sexerrl neces try things
Through Nl ss Rexett the selool nur e we learned of several children who
needed their tonsils remoxed but could not afford an operation Sach cases
secrr ed to belong to the unloi Red Cro s md the tonsils w ere removed without
delay Baskets of fruit hare been en' to shut in chlldren and in general the
unior Red Cro s has tried to help out in looking rfter the children who need
looking after
Here at high school the unior lied Cross is dispensing the ti rw equipped
lsottles of milk l'he weekly a'nount cl arged each per on does not quite cover
the cost of the milk and crackers and the Red Cro s is making up the dehciency
But the work of the un or Red Cross is internation xl in its scope and we w ere
called upon to help not onli the children in Appleton but those in Armenia
Xt Chr: tmas time a collection was trken which totalled twenty fue dollars
Later n the winter wl'en the nat on rl drrae was on we went at it w l a wi
and raised a fund large enough to support four orphans for a vear 5204 Tlu
faculty contributed generously to this fund and money was raised al o by a
very successful sandwich sale

The barracks were burlt by the boys of the manual trammg department thus

SIXIY freshman boys and three teachers occupy the Post Scrrpt They hare

the Po t Scrrpt was running as smoothly as any part of lnglm chool There rs r

so far as to challenge the freshman debaters at lugh school and they have had
regular gym classes at the X 'VI C A They have ubscnbed generously to

But the boys haxe been deprned of some of the prrvrleges and pleasures en

may well take off our hats to the teachers too Xlrss 'Nlarye 'Vlrs Banmster

THE CLARION ANNUAL
To tglohns and Return
The bunch was down m the dressmg room Just before tram tvme eager and
qu te lmpatrent to be on the way It was the hrst tlme some of them had gone
to Milwaukee and everybody was ready ahead of time We wanted for ake
untll the last mmute and when we finally forlornly went over to the station wlth
out hum we found hum rn the txcket 0HlCE Everybody was then rn good spmts
again because It would have been bad for us to go down wlthout our speedy
llttle quarter
We got on the tram and gave ourselves up to oblnvron By the tlme we had
pa sed the unctlon there was a varied display of tram letters Some glrls were
very expllclt as to where a letter should he opened The most explicit of these
was a letter to be opened at the fifteenth telephone pole on the other slde of Nec
nah Of course these mstructxons were carried out to the mmutest detail and with
due ceremony Bloomer was very much elated over a letter from a certain
fre hman glrl Vlfe got hold of It later and were enllghtened as to the cause of
t Rrght here l mlght rssue a w armng for future tram letter authors not to put
'lnythmg ln approaching the personal because m the end they are un versally
read l was looking down the alsle and saw ohn Showalter display a stuff
piece of paper wnth a blue rlbbon Hrs face was beammg with an ecclesrastrc
expresslon Later we had the opportumty to examine It more closely and found
the followmg little nursery rhyme under lt
The reason I enclo e the rrbbon of blue
ls lo help you renumber to always be true
It was mdeed a masterpiece and justified his immense pride ln xt The fel
lows not engaged ln these lighted amusements were down at one end of the coach
playmg cards or smgung under the beneficial lUllI0h of John Sylvarrus Roach
one of Ireland s most prominent agnostlcs Hrs volce has reached such a degree
of subllmlty that the least departure from the ordmary and establlshed melodles
of the song are lrntatlng The ellmmatlon of thus fault would Improve hrs volce
noticeably The only slgn of the progression of the card game was a smile on
one slde when a player saw his earnlngs mount I noticed Voigt had a de
Jected look and lt didn t take much guessing to know the cause We were so lm
mersed ln these varlous pastlmes that before we were aware of xt we had ar
rlved at Milwaukee It was then about eleven thlrty and we had made arrange
ments to have our dmner there We got off the tram and to our dxsappomtment
were told that we had to walk to the restaurant when the cab drivers were so
thick that we had to push our way through Everybody stared up at the ten
story bulldmgs untll the roof of his mouth was sunburned
We had dmner at Chrld s Restaurant and xt sure was a good one People
have a bad habrt of sxppmg water before the orders come-not as a means of
quenchmg their sunburned throats but more to grve the rmpressnon that they are
entirely at ease Some of the fellows on the team demonstrated this great ease
of drmkmg three or four glasses of water But water doesnt sat'sfy one s ap
petlte especially If he IS a boy and we drd away wxth a surprlsmg amount of
eats A number of spoons and other articles accompanled us out of the res
taurant as the fellows had acquired the hablt of collectmg souvenirs There
fore lt was of the greatest lmportance to get some from Ch-ld s Restaurant

APPLETOA HIGH SCHOOL
We went over to the Electric Rallw ay depot and chucked our baggage and
were left about two hours to stroll around and get acquamted ln general We
met the St Norbert s team there and w ere told that they were gomg to St ohn s
too to play the heaxywelght team 'Nlost of the fellows went over to the Ar
cade to shoot pool and mvestrgate the place w here It was poss ble to buy everv
thmg from a pm to an automoblle We w ere all deeply lmpressed by the mav
mtude
The car for Delaheld left about one thrrty so we all went back to the sta
tron The street cars were perhaps the cause of more comment than anything
thus far They were coupled together m groups of three and four and were so
long that when we rounded a corner and looked out of the window It was pos
sible to see the last one rf the vrew was not shut off by a burldrng When we
pa sed through the western section of the crty we were almost asphyxlated be
cau e of the smoke of the coal which w as burmng ln that part of the cnty near
the power plants We all felt quite sck
By the trme we had reached Delafleld lt had begun to ram We were met
it the statlon by the cadets but wrthout the usual transportation facnlltres We
had a pleasant walk about a mule down the road to the academy Wlmlle
clressmg for the game Tappert was thrust unto the lrmehght agaln because he had
left the greater part of hs football costume at Appleton Thls wasnt very
unu ual for something along this order happened at regular mtervals We went
out to the held and walked around as much as posslble 1n mches of mud It
were rn great plrrts for the bxg splurge at Nlrlwaukee that nlght and the next
day Vve lm d the very best supper at the Vl tors restaurant about a block down
the road For lack of greater and a more actrve pastime Woehler went to the
barber shop for a shave The re t of us went over to the general store and talked
over the game and spat on the stove Really enjoyable tme while It lasted but
I wouldnt want to be a cadet Buchanan had come out wrth a car and some
of us went back to Mllwaukee with htm After we had dnven rn the general
dlrectron of lVl1lwaukee for several hours we fmally stopped a man m a small
town and a ked hrm how far we were from Milwaukee and whrch way to go
He told us we were twenty mrles on the other slde and told us to go back al
mo t the same way we had come So Nlrlwaukee rsnt so very brg after all and
t s easlly passed by
When we got back we registered at the Metropolrtan Hotel for we were
planning to tay over untxl Sunday The rest of the fellows had all planned to
go to the C-ayety and then take the eleven thirty tram home It was a secret
ambrtlon of most of them to be able to boast of the fact that they had been to

box seats at the co t of two dollars aprece We went to the 'Vlrller with Coach
and aw ome excellent vaudevllle ln fact rt was so good that Coach couldnt
go without seelng the last act and mlssed the tram or rather thought he would
But vt yu t happened that the clocks were turned back and the taxr coach took

THE CLARION AANUAL
FI-b Alchemrst
The eyes of the alchemist glrttered like a cat s as he talked to the young man
The drm lrght whrch flrckered frtfully across hrs aged parchment like face gave
a mystrc look to the old apartment Scientific books glass tubes and chemicals
lay on the table across which he leaned rn hrs long flowing garments The walls
were cosered wrth maps of unfamrlrar countrres Curious rncense filled the arr
It rs the wonder of the ages the triumph of hundreds of centuries the work
of a lrfe trme crred the old man rn a hoarse vorce He raised a trembling yel
low hand 'VIy son rt rs for you to fulfill your destiny rt rs for you to crown
my old age wrth glory for you to secure immortal fame for us both He lifted
a vial filled wrth a currous lrqurd toward the light Many drfferent colors shot
through rt now rt was rose now sapphire now turquoise now a baneful murky
black The alchemrt grasped the young man s wrrst This srmple draught
w rll enable you to breathe freely rn whatever atmosphere you may find yourself
You are skilled rn all the languages of thrs planet you are young and strong
and fearless Go forth' Seek Mars Do not fall Be back rn two years that
we may tell the wartrng world of our triumph and add immortal pages to history
At sunrrse my aeroplane shall be ready replied the young man rrsrng
shall not farl What you ask of me rs much but no more than I owe 'o you
One thing only I ask If I come not back you will care for her3 The alchem
rst nodded For a moment the young man met the cruel fierce eyes of the other
wrth a steady thoughtful gaze then turning he strode swiftly out The musty
door creaked omrnously behind hrm
A long year passed and yet another Daily the old man watched the skv
for the sight of the aeroplane for he knew hrs days were numbered By hrs srde
The last day of the second year came cold and stormy The alchemrt
waited late that nrght by the window
He will come tonight my daughter he said to the quret grrl at hr side
I know he will come tonight' Gently he pressed her hand The clock
pointed to quarter of twelve The slow minutes dragged by A dreadful sr
lence filled the room the drm light ffrckered unsteadrly The clock struck
twelve Then the grrl sprang to her feet her calm quret manner grvrng way to
frenzied rage and despair
You have done rt she crred Selfish unfeelrng man you have sent hrm
to hrs death
He raised a trembling hand Fear not she said scornfully fear not the
touch of a human hand A greater power shall condemn you you who were
not content wrth all that was given you Oh I On the rnstant the old
door creaked on rts hinges she wheeled around her startled eyes glowed wrth
ear
Perfect silence The old man gripped hrs charr and half rose to hrs feet The
revns rn hrs forehead bulged Slowly the door opened The young man stood
on the threshold The alchemist one hand outstretched tottered tow ard hrm
My son forgiveness' he crred and fell lrfeless
Doris crred the young man after a long moment I I neser reac red
'Wars Hrs draught rt was powerless and I I could not come back to tell
hrm he was a failure that hrs lrfe s work was useless I hare lned these two
years rn thrs country Thank God he has not lrxed to hear these words' He
drew her out of the room w rth him The mustv old door Crf'1l4Pfl IWIIIUCI them
