Wolff. Mr. Flood goes "a-broad" for AFS Week. Appleton East is thousands of miles away from my school in Manila and there are thousands of differences within the school system. My year here has been quite an experience. School starts at 7:45 instead of 7:20, students change classes instead of teachers, and each class is an hour long instead of forty minutes. On Friday night there are dances at school instead of Saturday night parties at someone's house. We can wear jeans instead of uniforms, white socks, and black shoes to school. OF course, a major difference is school being co-ed instead of all-girls. Beside watching football games and ice hockey, the most fantastic thing l have experienced is winter. ln the Philippines, our temperature does not go below 60 degrees, so this was my first time ever to see, feel, and taste snow. l was simply fascinated by it. My style of dress has come a long way from wearing summer clothes all year-round, to wearing coats, mittens, scarves, and boots. My stay here, just like everywhere else, has come to an end, but l shall forever remember my experiences and the acquaint- ances l have made here at East. I would like to thank all of you for making my AFS year a Great Year! Thank You, Bebs Gatmaitan 1' 'A ' j I .,.,. 11,1-fs? 4 . 'ff '-'f -- 1 r 5-55 East had three foreign visitors this year. The lake is calm Vacations are gone Cool water laps against the shore and all the docks are taken in. There is a smell in the air, A smell of rotting leaves A smell of misty morning, And from the cottage there is the odor of wood smoke and bacon frying. The trees have not turned color But their time is coming ln the still morning their leaves hang limp. Squirrels leap and frolic ln nut-filled trees. They cut the nuts down With distinct plops and much chattering As each squirrel tells of his achievement. Yesterday seven deer walked past. They were lat and brown Ready for the hunting season And the hard winter alter. They will need all their energy. The sky is a leaden blue Merging with the water in the distance. Small fish leap alter minnows near shore While larger fish watch the small Fish and fishermen catch nothing. ln the stillness their voices are discouraged.
