The musical chosen to be put on this year was
Lerner and Loewe's "My Fair Lady." The
production director was Mr. Svejda with Miss
Bubolz as the musical director and Mr. Keliher
as technical director. Mr. Case was in charge of
choreography and costumes.
"My Fair Lady" is the story of Professor
Higgins' venture to teach an uneducated waif
off the streets of London how to be a respect-
able lady, against many difficulties.
The household staff honors Professor Higgins for his successful transformation of a crude flower vender
into a prim young lady.
lm,
Bill Dafoe staggers out of the pub while Robin Gibson lies in a daze. Tom Breunig as Professor Higgins and Sue Boldt as Eliza Doolittle
spend a quiet evening together practicing their enunciation.

"A Pretty Good Mile Run" was put on in
February by Children's Theatre under the
direction ol Mrs. Maclte. Traveling to the
various grade schools in town, the troupe
performed the familiar tale ol the tortoise
ancl the hare to the attentive audiences
awaiting them. The cast enioyed the audi-
ence responses they got from the younger
children and the children enioyed the play
with its moral ol "slow but sure wins the
race."
NHEIQIT T W N
A dramatic courtroom scene adds to the climax of the play, "inherit the
Wind."
Doug Purdy points out a vital fact to the jury.
Sympathy and despair are displayed on Sonia Ellefson's face as she soothes
Brent Johnson playing her attorney husband, Matthew Harrison Brady.

"inherit the Wind" was put on by the East drama department
on April 5-7 under the direction of Mr. Svejda. The play is a
iictionalized account of the Famous Scopes trial oi1925 dealing
with a young school teacher accused of teaching evolution in a
public school. "He that troubleth his own house shall inherit
the windf and the Fool shall be servant to the wise in heart."-
Bible quote.

Mr. Flood goes "a-broad" for AFS Week.
Appleton East is thousands of miles away from my school in
Manila and there are thousands of differences within the school
system. My year here has been quite an experience. School
starts at 7:45 instead of 7:20, students change classes instead of
teachers, and each class is an hour long instead of forty minutes.
On Friday night there are dances at school instead of Saturday
night parties at someone's house. We can wear jeans instead of
uniforms, white socks, and black shoes to school. OF course, a
major difference is school being co-ed instead of all-girls.
Beside watching football games and ice hockey, the most
fantastic thing l have experienced is winter. ln the Philippines, our
temperature does not go below 60 degrees, so this was my first
time ever to see, feel, and taste snow. l was simply fascinated by
it. My style of dress has come a long way from wearing summer
clothes all year-round, to wearing coats, mittens, scarves, and
boots.
My stay here, just like everywhere else, has come to an end,
but l shall forever remember my experiences and the acquaint-
ances l have made here at East. I would like to thank all of you
for making my AFS year a Great Year!
Thank You,
Bebs Gatmaitan

THE SOMETIMES TOUCH
Sometimes when
things are going badly
You've got to have someone tell you
that they care.
Sometimes when
life hurts
You've got to have someone say
they feel it too.
Sometimes when
a million troubles
pull you under
You've got to have someone
to lean on.
You
can lean on me
and I will help
just the very little
l that counts the very most.

FALL
Today it is tall
Not by the calendar of man
but by the calendar of nature.
The lake is calm
Vacations are gone
Cool water laps against the shore
and all the docks are taken in.
There is a smell in the air,
A smell of rotting leaves
A smell of misty morning,
And from the cottage there is the odor
of wood smoke and bacon frying.
The trees have not turned color
But their time is coming
ln the still morning
their leaves hang limp.
Squirrels leap and frolic
ln nut-filled trees.
They cut the nuts down
With distinct plops
and much chattering
As each squirrel tells of his achievement.
Yesterday seven deer walked past.
They were lat and brown
Ready for the hunting season
And the hard winter alter.
They will need all their energy.
The sky is a leaden blue
Merging with the water in the distance.
Small fish leap alter minnows near shore
While larger fish watch the small Fish
and fishermen catch nothing.
ln the stillness
their voices are discouraged.
Fall is a time of nature
When fish know plastic imitations
And are not fooled by man's inventions
A slight breeze comes up,
Small ripples dot the water.
A woodpecker, stirred from lethargy,
Finds the cottage a good pecking spot-
Despite the creosote, grubs thrive on pine siding.
And it is time for breakfast
For both woodpecker and man
At Long Lake.
