THE LANTERN 1971 APPLETON HIGH SCHOOL EAST APPLETON, WISCONSIN VOLUME IV TABLE OF CONTENTS StudentLife.........,A.... 4 Academics............... .18 Organizations..............38 and so, we travel on. it's hard to say just how, because, for every person there's a different way to understand the breaking dawn and face the gathering wind. lnow' isn't the easiest time for us, this stepping into another year and adding and subtracting from ourselves. it requires a strength that, too often, we find absent from our lives. and so, we gaze into the past in hopes that memories will cloak away the fears. strange, somehow, that memories don't often find themselves in books; it's the circles we remember most: the tests life brought us that demanded self-examination until we knew ourselves. and the times when excellence was a tool employed to teach each one about his own, real worth. and then those moments when life could only be understood alone away from all plastioity and clamor. funny how our only real happiness always realized its beginning in a mind alone, determined to understand. we were spun by other circles, too, perhaps. the game of life re-echoed on a football field, and jubilation over honors well deserved. friends spun in circles, too, sometimes cliqueSe but still, they helped us grow. and now that we gaze back, even the one-time-bad seems painted good. sad sometimes that no one's scoreboard ticks forever. outward things must pass, and outward circles cease, but when it all has come and gone, we each will travel on, and face the gathering winds, and smile at breaking dawns, and step into the circles that spell time and life to us.-Chery1 Brunner Athletics .................. 84 Classes .................... l 12 Index ...................... 153 ' 7 v -?MNMKH$ ,, g ., 10 11 12 ion t 1ena A1 13 14 :a Vicrom MW ; z ., 3 -' -' , . 3 15 ilation Jub 6 l 18 ACADEMICS Above, Nancy Dejmek and Jerry VanderLinden let their dramatic talent show through in "She Stoops to Conquer." Nancy Richman chuckles at Krista Olson's cool expression as they are both caught by the camera during the A.F.S. dinner. Mary Heztel performs with her guitar in the A.F.S. sponsored folk concert. NEW FRIENDS Disillusionment would be the only word to describe my reactions at A.E. with 1800 co-educational students, no dress code, diversity of subjects, and teachers minus graduation gowns. AE. was a great change from 750 single-sex students, prescribed uniform, basic subjects and gown-wearing teachers. Along with this, when one wakes up at 6:45 in order to go to school, something should be done with your education system. School in New Zealand begins at 9:20, and we have a 15 minute break in the morning, 1V3 hours for lunch, and leave school at 3:25. We don't have study halls or independ- ent study, much to my disappointment. The biggest problem I found was the winter in Wis- consin, or ttorture' as it was for me. When you come from a climate where you have never experienced temperatures below 30 degrees, a Wisconsin winter is somewhat of a new experience. When I left New Zea- land we had a bad winter'Z days of snow for a mas- sive total of 2", and school was closed on the second day. As a conclusion, I'd like to say that this experience at A.E. is one I'll never forget, and the people at East, Appleton and the U.S.A. have surpassed my greatest expectations. A final word would be that I hope that next year's football team finds a better kicker than the hopeless clod they had this year. Kim McDonald Debbie Gunther was chosen from this area to go abroad this summer as an A.F.S. student. Kim McDonald, alias nN.Z.", was our A.F.S. student from New Zea- land. He stayed with the family of Mike Sullivan. At the left are N.Z.'s reactions to East, Appleton and the U.S.A. The award is to be given annually to a student who has excelled in one of the fine arts'music, drama, art, photography, debate or forensics. Because this is the year Greg would have graduated, there were four recipients of the award. They were Sherrie VanWyk, Jim Tideman, Tod Galloway and Ruth Bretheim.
