Around and around we go — lines, lines, and more lines — eating in lines, registering in lines, and all but going bed in lines . . . working harder than some of us thought was possible. Some people say we are having fun, but . . . Appalachian is now our home — the " Mountaineers, " our team; our workshop, the Ad. building; the cafeteria, our chow hall; dorms serving as homes; and all the students being friendly and saying " hello " . . . The rains came and snow flies, but so does the time, so who cares? We keep trying to pull up the old quality point ratings while our professors keep trying to pull them down . . . Page Ninety-uine George Lancaster Captain The beginning oF the 1950-51 basketball season saw the men from Appalachian rated for their first cellar position in the histor - of the school. Gone were such men as Glen Causey, Charlie Hope, Pete Martin and Clifton Wey, with oiiK Cleorge Lancaster and Joe Hunt about which Coach I hxncr was to build his hardwood men. Men like Alvin Hooks, John P echa, Charlie Moir, Orville Stanley, Perk Collins, Jimm Mast and Ral|ih Hodges were supposed to be too green to compete with the game-veterans of 1 ligh Point, Catawba and Lenoir Rhyne. Coach I Inovcr molded these bo s into a team that was to be the surprise of the North State, and though they didn ' t win the championship, thev prcned BASKETBALL to be the outstandin " dark horse of the North State Conference in many years. The Mountaineers opened the season with a win oxer the Quakers of Guilford College b ' the score of 55-53 and one of the most hectic games of the season. Collins and Hunt served notice to all observers in that ball game that the Mountaineers wdiikl be tough to h.mdle in in ball game. s the season progressed, the Moimtaincers managed to stay even with the won and lost column and as the season began to nyrrow down to the final weeks ol pla ' , thev began a dri c that almost ga e them top position in the North State Conference. In games that proved to be nothing less than sensa- tional, the hardwoodmen managed to defeat the powerful Bears from Lenoir Rh ne, Indians of Catawba and the Panthers of High Point on the home court. Strangely enough, the lost to the same teams on their home floors. In the feature game of the season, the Mountaineers edged past the Indians of Catawba in an o ertime jieriod here at Appalachian in repetition of the Elon-Appalachian football game, loe I lunt put the Mountaineers into the o ertime period v ith a foul shot and then with the pres- sure on, sank the points that ga e the Mountaineers the ball game in the first o ertime period. For ne.xt sear ' s edition of basketball jilavcrs. Coach Hoover will ha e the same crew that donned unih)rms for this season. Appalachian should r.iiik well up inlo the top three teams with such bo s at I lunt, 1 looks, Collins, Ostwalt. Stanley. Wallace, Pvecha. 1 iocU es, Mast, and the cro|) of incoming (reshmen tli,it will scrxe as substitutes when the need arises. I he main cog in the wheel will he the absences of Captain George Lan caster, who will be lost i,i the graduation route. , ll in all.
