Student Government
The student government ot our school is handled primarily
by the Student Council, which consists ot a representative from
each homeroom and club. The president, Van Hunter, assisted
by Mr. Kerr, the advisor, has the tremendous task of improving
relations between the students and the school. Problems are
encountered and workable solutions are derived through
democratic procedure.
Some ofthe activities of this past year were: the establishment
of an honorary study hall for bus students, conducting morning
devotions over the public address system, and as an aid to
the financing of the May Crowning, the selling of candy.
The study of a charter system for organizations was com-
menced this year with the hope that this system may be
initiated in the 57-58 school term.

Something new has been added to AHS - male cooks! The
Chef's Club is sponsored by Mrs. Mentch and was organized
through the Home and Family Living Classes.
The primary purpose of this club is to teach the boys to cook
and share the responsibility in the kitchen. They dish up
pizza, all sorts of candy and cookies, hotdogs, cupcakes,
chicken, pies, and many other delicacies.
A number of times during the year the "chefs" don their white
caps and aprons and treat the girls in the Home and Family
Living classes to the choicest products of their culinary art.

collaborate in the annual gym exhibition. These gymnasts per-
form in a variety of stunts such as tumbling, tap dancing

Each Thursday morning in activity period, the President of
Troupe No. 1473 calls the meeting of the Thespians to order.
The purpose of this organization is to promote an interest in
dramatics among the students, further the abilities of the
members, and provide entertainment for the school.
Our Thespians, with the help of the Neapollotans, perform
several plays during the year. The three-act play this year
was called "The Little Shepherd of Kingdom Come", and two
of the one-act plays were "Storm Warning" and "The Laugh-
ing Ghost".
A formal initiation is held each school term for the Neapollo-
tans that earn the ten points necessary for membership. During
the initiation, the future Thespians take the club oath, learn
the full meaning of the motto, "Act well your party there all
the honor lies!", and receive their pins and certificates. Also
any Thespian who has earned an additional ten points, re-
ceives a star.

Varsity Club
The Varsity Club, our organization for lettermen of A.H.S.,
is made up of male athletes who have exhibited outstanding
skills on the gridiron, basketball floor, and diamond. Spon-
sored by our new head football coach, Mr. Afanesko, the
boys, when not piling up scores for our Alma Mater, work
on the many projects of the club. The most important of these
is the solicitation of ads from local businessmen. Money
gained in this way is used to buy sweaters or jacket awards
for the members who will graduate during the current term.
Each year the club gives an honorary award to some non-
member whom they feel has contributed most to their welfare.
This year the award was given to Mrs. Mentch for the out-
standing work she has done.

Orchestra
The newest group in our music department is the Orchestra.
This was formerly the String Ensemble but this year it com-
bined with some ot the band instruments to form an orchestra.
Since this orchestra is still in the infant stage, at the present
time, it is not as prominent a part ot the music department
as it will be in the future. However some members of this
group have participated in the county and district festivals
during this school year.
This organization gives students a chance to explore all types
of music, from jazz to classical masterpieces. Also an oppor-
tunity to try their talents on the stringed instruments is made
available to all students interested.

Every Tuesday and Thursday some ot the boys and girls ot
our student body troop down the hall to the auditorium to
participate in Chorus. These songsters and songstresses are
guided by the music director, Mr. Helenic. This group is
entirely voluntary and the students belong because they really
like to sing and take part in the year's activities.
The group's activities for this year included a Veterans Day
program, a Christmas program, "Musirama Holiday" which
consisted of music by the school dance band and the regular
band and selections from the operetta, "Porgy and Bess",
and the Annual Spring Festival.
This year, officers were elected for the hrst time to help
govern the Chorus in a more satisfactory manner.

Mr. Afanesko, holding the position of head football
coach for the first time, displayed all the abilities of a
great gridiron mentor, leading our Tigers to a successful
season of five vvins and four defeats.
Usually credit is given to iust a "fighting eleven" but in
our team, the vvhole team, from the lowliest substitute to
the star of the team, deserves credit for our boys play
as a unit-not as individuals.
Eight boys who this year were part of our gridiron team
next year will either be alumni or ineligible for further
Competition. However, this is not of as much concern
as it normally would be for Apollo boasted a very strong
bench during the past season.
A iob well done, Mr. Afanesko, and best wishes in future

Under the capable leadership ot our new coach M
Quigg Apollo High closed out her bid for the Section
21 B championship with a record ot eight victories as
opposed to six defeats This was good enough to finish
in a deadlock with Bell Avon for third place The Tigers
overall record for the season stands at fifteen victories
and eight defeats.
Led by the scoring of Walter Woods and the all around
abilities ot our senior co-captains, Chuck Hall and Mid
Gourley, our Tigers displayed unusual speed, aggressive-
ness, and ball handling.
Highlights of our cage season were dual victories over
Vandergritt, Bell-Avon, Saltsburg, Elders Ridge, and a
victory over Leechburg's confident Blue Devils. The
game played in Leechburg's jam-packed gym saw our
Tigers come from behind and nip the Blue Devils 53-51.
Two players graduated from the squad, but the nu-
cleus of the team returns to pound the hardwood dur-
ing the 57-58 season-Good luck, fellows, during next
year's schedule.
