5 This year's Apollo Athletic program was high-lighted by the basketball
and softball teams. The basketball team played many varied opponents. Among these
were La Cuesta CSanta Barbara? Continuation School, Har Vista iVentnraJ Continuation
School, CSA, Simi Valley City Government team, Apollo High Staff, Cal Lutheran
Football team, Sequoia Jr. High, Apollo alumni teams and others. The Apollo team
was on the winning side in most of the contests-
Players on the team included Rick Dierksen, Nick Dierksen, Brian Cameron,
Gordon Swaim, Dwain Langerberg, John Quinlan, Don See, Rick Martinez, Carey Marcum,
Steve Hanson, Tony Medlin and Ken lverett, Many of the games were witnessed by
enthusiastic crowds of Apollo rooters. - V
The Apollo Softball team got off to a fast start by winning its first
game against a good Lusty's Srifters team, but since then has not found success a'
second time despite looking good in spots. The main draw back this year has been
lack of consistency. There has been much enthusiasm and a lot of fun. Included on
this year's team, which is entered in the Simi Valley Recreation Slow Fitch League,
are Rick and Nick Dierhsen, Don'3oe, Tony Kedlin, John Quinlan, Sieve Erahm, Ron
Clayton, KentVEearce, Ken gwerett, Andy Medvitz, Eob Baxter, Steve Hanson, Sean Mosley,
Hike Mosley and Tony Fredorico. Brad Greene, EarleConway and Pepe Haciel also helped
out a great deal. - '
' We are looking forward to more fun, participation, growth and success
neat year,' Thanks to ell Apollo rosters for supporting their teas,

PEER COUNSELING
This class was based on the idea that nany students would
feel more comfortable talking over problems with their peers. It
was made up of students wanting to accept this challenge.
They have experienced testing, video taping, learned
connmmication skills, counseling theory, and became familiar with
ccnnmnity resources. They have also leaaned about themselves. This
was done through reading, role playing, discussion, and experience.
The students which have completed this course have
enjoyed and been frustrated by their experiences. They have shown
personal growth and been fine counselors. Our biggest regret is
that most of our counselors are graduating. Their choice for the
future -- people helping professions,of course! 4

Do you ever wonder what goes on at Apollo at night?
what happens in the science room? You would think everything
would be asleep, but it's just the opposite. All the animals
come to life. I mean wake up. They crawl out of their cages
and play on the table, read books, open drawers, etc. Just
think of all the scientific books they can readf They could
take over the world. Well, it is something to think about.
Anything is possible, so if I were you, I would always keep an
eye out for the little animals, and the bugs.d You shouldn't
underestimate them. They areysmarter than we think.

APOLLO
I couldn't begin to say how much Apollo has meant
to me. It has meant to me more than I could put in words. I
would like to thank Jane for all she has done for me. She is
truly a good friend and teacher and I hope that he never stops
teaching. She has so much to offer, and is very good at giving.
y I would also like to thank Jon for being there to
talk to me also. He has a funnyness about him that I hope he
never loses. I would also like to thank Brad for letting me
come here. Ihave truly appreciated it very much.
Now I would like to thank all of you for your
caring, loving, listening and teaching me.

The message I would like to leave to the Apollo Staff and students is
one of great importance to me. What I would like to say is, HThanks to every -
body for their help.N Because of their help, I am graduating from Apollo
this year. I would like to add that I think I have learned something more
than just the three R's about myself, which I feel is important. I also
would like to leave my own little saying: nAlmost every student at one time
or another will ditch.H When they do this they usually say to themselves,
uthe vice principal is going to yell at me.H While later on in life the
same student might decide to skip work and he'll probably think, Hwell, if
I don't go to work, the boss will yell at me,H When he should thinking, Hlf
I don't go to class, I won't get credit or credits to graduate.H And later
on in life he'll say: uwowf If I don't go to work today, I could get fired,
then I couldn't support myself or my family.H The thing I'm trying to say here
is what Apollo is all about. The school gives you more than just educationg
it give's you a lesson in life, and a chance at life. Ilm prohd to go here and
very happy I did. Thank You again everybody. ,
Yours Irulyy

P.S. Watch out Moorpark here I come. Baker fih
Apollo is not like any other school because the people are altogetherp
different. This is more like one big family to me. The teachers are not
like teachers, they are more like your close friends because they try to
understand you more and take their time and don't rush you out the door and
say, UGO to class!H like the teachers at the other High Schools. At other
High Schools, it is a constant war between the students and the teachers. You
are pushed to do work at them but not at Apollo. If you don't want to do
something, you don't have to. People don't ditch here as much as other schools
because they like their teachers and they can do their work when they'want I
or as fast as they want.
Sincerely,
Joanne Zammit
JUST STAPFISH ON THE BEACH
Yesterday, when I got homefrom school, my mother
asked me to go to-the store for her. All I could think of
was how much I didn't want to go. I wanted to go over to a
friend's house. I tried to get out of going. No use.
I dropped my hooks on the tahle, wicked un my keys
and reached for 'ine list. "Honey, nick uo your hooks and put'em
in your room. Don't make the kitchen messier than it is,N
called my mom. ' I A A 'i
"DarnI" I putdown keys and took my books to my
'room.' NI can't wait till I'm out of here.H I thought moodily.
I retrieved my keys, and off I went.

her white hair had escaped and hmg don-m loosely across her face.
She had just been to the market, for she was pulling a
two wheeled wire cart that contained a hog of groceries. As I
passed, I looked into her eyes. They, were sad. Dulled with

tell her I loved her, and she was heautif'ul and take her anywhere
she was going. But I cftdhft. '

YOU THINK
EOU'RE UGLHQ
For me, ugly is a way of life. I mean, I
was such an ugly baby that when I was born
my mother received over a hundred.sympathy
cards, two from my father. In fact, I came
out so bad, the doctor who delivered me
gave my mother 202 off. I was born at home
but when my mother saw me she was taken to
the hospital! Q
It was especially hard being an ugly child.
Whenever I went to parties they always wanted
to pin the tail on me. I was so ugly, my mother
took me everywhere she went so she wouldn't
have to kiss me good-bye. When my parents went.
on vacation, they sent my brother to an aunt's
house, and put me in a kennel. At the age of
nine my parents ran away from home!
Some people look like they were beaten with
an ugly stick, but I look like the whole tree
fell on me. People said I was so ugly I could
make a railroad train turn down a dirt road.
In high school I was responsible for a new
rage at the dances. It was called HThe Scream
And Run!H I
At twelve I got acne and nobody even noticed.
I went to a drug store and asked for something
for my face, and the druggist gave me a paper
bag. I was so ugly then-that even my pimples
left. In all that time I only met one girl that
I liked. I told her she was the girl of my
dreams, and she said I was the boy of her night-
mares. Once I took her to a nice restaurant, and
when we got there she asked if I wouldn't mind
staying in the car and watching her purse. Turns
out she didn't even have a purse!
Being ugly does have some advantages
though. I once held off a vampire for
twenty minutes with a wallet-size photo
of myself. Seems my pictures have always
been in demand. My freinds use them to
scare rats away from garbage cans. At
least they did until the rats complained
to the ASPCA!
I thought things were getting better
recently when the Ugly Liberation Move-
ment asked me to pose for their recruiting
posters. Only soon after I was arrested
for indecent exposure, and all I had
showing was my face. I've come to one con-
clusion, ugliness is in the eye of the
beholder. Except with me that is. My
ugliness is in my eyes, my nose, my teeth,
my warts...

Over 36 years ago Hank Anderson, Bill Laughlin and Bill Scanclling forrn-
ed SAGA the moth-ar company of Straw 1-lat Pizza Palace which now, has
more than 145 pizza palaces blanketing California, Arizona, Texas, Colo-
rado and Australia to name just a little portion of its international pcfpu-.
larity. 1
"Straw Hat" had a lot more goal in mind than an excellent pizza. They
wanted to bring fan-ily fun hack to thartable as it was known in tho.
"Gordon Vows", not so long ago: iwhen spaghetti and pizza were a re-
cipe treat from the old country and "soft shoe" was as "in" barber-
shop quartets and ice craarn socialsl. In order to acrsompizsii this atmos-
phere, SAGA knew that it took alot more than grain wood plank tables
and oh! time silent movies, even though these are trademarks just like.
the straw.-1 hats. It rock happy personnel who were ecstatic about serving
people a good, good time.
This is the attitude of Steyn' Monroe who manages the Simi Vznlgy "Straw-
Hat' and his merry pizza purveyors who really cream a deiicioug flavor of
fim,' as well as the delicious iiai-or found in the sandwiches, salads, pitizas,
spaghetti, etc. Even though some of the "fun campaigns' are around we
clock and nation wide, such as "free Happy Birthday nizza"'i:lub for
children under .14 lphone for more informationl, each and every "Straw
Hat" has its own personality of community fun, night alter night. lu Simi
.Steve Monroe has his famous spaghetti smorgashord every Monday and
Tuesday night where you can eat 'all the spaghetti you want for oniyt
S1.19' and it's even served with a complimentary glowing glass of wine.
On Tuesday while your feasting on spaghetti tliere's a grand old barber-
shop quartet featuring Bruce Bran and Ed lVrc-only' from Il p.m. lem ax-
tra charge tolksll. Steve even sets up special games for szhurcli groups
and birthday parties and gives away pizzas to the winners. l-ie'il arranga
a restaurant tour for your Eoy Scout group or school, etc. for a peer into
the giant oven and other "wliat's behind the scenes". lf you want to raise
money for your group or club just phoneSteve, he donates thousands
of dollars in pizza discounts every year to help his community. And for
kids, oh is Straw Hai Fizra Paiace the place for kids! Not only are there
special birthday parties to keep the fuss and muss out of the house and
Mom out of the kitchen, but every Friday night there's "Squeaky" the
clown and free pizzas giv-an away too,
If you'i'e a quiz program "buff" ioin your own local "Guinness Buoltof
Records" quiz program free, live-and exciting every Saturday night at
"Straw Hat". Even on Sunday theyre are pizza parties with a dollar off
the large pizzaaml .50d.off the medium ones.
As you can sue, fun is popping and excitement is high seven days a week .
here, and il thrfrifs not enough "soft shoeingu and "hoopla" to suit your
fancy, just get up and do your own. They really like people and tha fun
things they do at Straw Har Pizza Vzilrice.
