The Archers completed their best regular season ever. The people of Antwerp really had cause to celebrate! After living in the shadows of other teams in the past, the Archers have cast their own shadow. They brought an outright Green Meadows Conference Championship back to Antwerp. The Antwerp Team held one of the best Class A records in the state . Not only did the team rank in the state , but also within the school by breaking all sorts of records. They broke the most consecutive wins of eight straight wins by winning thirteen straight, finishing with a fantastic record of 17 wins 1 loss. Duke Miller broke Rick Schilb ' s record of most assists in one season set in 64-65. The previous record was 126. Duke holds the record at 149 assists. Duke also made 1st Team All District. David Snyder received awards for Honorable Mention All-State and 1st Team All League. Kevin Taylor made Honorable Mention All District. In tournaments Antwerp drew Ohio City, who they beat 104- 50. They went on to play Ottoville but were defeated 68- 63 , Thus ending the season with 18 wins 2 losses. L-R, FRONT ROW - Donnie Shaffer, Tom Buiyok. Their improvement was contributed to the response they gave to their coach Mr. Thiel. One of the skills the girls developed included keeping their opponent to a scoring average of 45 points per game compared to the 60 pts. they scored against other teams. Their defense was tremendous! Even though the team had many setbacks the girls kept their determination to win. The breakthrough came with a win against Ayersville. The girls outplayed, outhustled, and outscored the pilots to defeat them with a score of 23 to 20 . With improved coaching methods, the team ' s enthusiasm to excel, the determination to win and self confidence, the girls are looking forward to a better season in 1978. What a hi: Ron ! Boys ' Varsity Track After losing some valuable seniors last year, the boys ' track team made a fine comeback. They gained many new freshmen this year and each one of them showed they have potential to become great athletes. Although the team wasn ' t that big in number, outstanding performances were turned in by all members. Senior Dan Reinhart placed numerous times in the 220 , including a place at the GMC meet. The 880 relay team placed 3rd at the Wayne Trace Invitational. Jim Baker, voted MVP this year, copped a first in the 100 yard dash in all but one meet. He took first at GMC and Sectionals, his best time being a 10.3. He traveled to Districts at Ada, Ohio, but after a mixup at the finish line in the finals, he came home with a sixth place. Things will be looking up next year was there will be some promising freshmen coming up who have already turned in some fine times. The track team is coached by Mr. Fred Wiswell. What was really astonishing was the fact that most of those records were being broken by freshman and sophomore girls. Each member contributed greatly to the team. The sensational Herber twins, Pam and Tarn, were setting new records every meet in the mile and 830. Pam Wolfe, this year ' s MVP proved her ability in the 100 and 220, placing at the GMC meet. The 880 and 440 relay teams brought their times down and placed at the GMC also . Cheryl Spryn and Jane McCalla did well in the discus and shot. The best part of the deal is that next year, most of the girls will be returning.
