They believed that the rooms used for art classes were unsafe because they were not specially built for projects requiring kilns, stoves, or other various equipment. The fundings for the new art wing were given to the school district by a special building bond created five years ago. The total cost for labor and equipment came to 0,000. It was "lnsideout Backward" day on Tuesday. The big highlight during lunch was the Bean Eating Contest. The winners advanced to the finals. Wednesday was "Jersey Day". Jerseys were leased in the cafeteria for fifty cents. Class competition of the Wheelbarrow Race was held at lunch. Sophomores were victorious. Thursday, "Derby Day" the Class of 80 sold derbies for 50. At lunch the decorated derbies were judged for the finals. On Friday, everyone participated in "Black and Gold Day". The gym was the scene where the finalists gathered to make their final efforts in the Bean Eating Contest, Wheelbarrow Races, and Derby Contest. During the week points were tallied for the activities held each day. Officers were chosen in the beginning of October as follows: President, Richard Hammett: Vice President Missy Hilburn: Secretary, Linda Hendrickson, and Treasurer, Sally Rose. The first order of business was the float for homecoming "'Freebird" was the theme. Our first attempt at float building turned out quite well. On April 3, 1976 the Sophomore Hop, "Show me the Way" was held in the cafeteria from 8:00 to 12:00. Everyone danced to the music of "Westwind". May soon rolled around and it was soon time for the election of junior officers. Elected were: Linda Hendrickson, President: Richard Hammett, Vice Presidentg Cindy Miranda, Secretary: and Kevin Shellooe, Treasurer. Junior The class of 1978 started its year with a successful car wash in the fall. Then it was on to float building for the annual Homecoming Week. The float theme was "Take it to the Limit". At Christmas the hustling juniors sold mistletoe to amorous students. By using their lungs to capacity the juniors won the spirit 'stick for being the most spirited class. In February the junior prom was the highlight social event for the class of 78! The "Westwind" played music for the prom which presented its theme, "Dream On", to all those attending. Valentine post office, the selling of cokes, buttons and T-shirts kept many juniors busy that year. Spring of our 'unior year, three officers were elected to represent our enior Class. They were President, Ron Jones: Vice resident, Cindy Miranda: Secretary, Brenda Buford: end appointed as Treasurer was Carol Whitaker. he year started off right with the help of everyone involved with the winning of the Homecoming float "Come Sail Away in 78". And that was only the beginning! A golf tournament got under way with the help of the 19th hole, and ambitious seniors and raised more money than we could handle going toward Disneyland. On Friday, May 5, 1978 the Sheraton Palace was the setting for the big occasion-The Senior Ball. From 9:00 to 1:00 everyone was "boogie'n" to the tunees of "Savory" and "Eclipse" the theme was "Night Fever". Everyone had a fantastic evening, even though this was the beginning of the end of the year activities for the soon-to-be graduates. Grad Night at Disneyland was a complete success. On Friday June 2 some ten buses departed from Antioch High School at 2:00 returned home on Saturday afternoon. June 4, was Baccalaureate Services, with a calm, sincere atmosphere Seniors listened to the sermons of local Reverends and fellow classmates. The last week of school was one of mixed emotions, but, Plaque laying 78' was nothing but a partying success. On Friday, June 9, 1978 the Senior Class lead by junior girls as color guards dressed in pastels took their places for the Graduation Ceremony. The seniors listened to Mr. Richardson give his farewell speech, wondering what the future would hold for us after receiving our diplomas. After Graduation ceremonies, Seniors went to the All-Night Party that was planned by the parents. "Star Wars" was the theme which reflected in the atmosphere of the starry-eyed graduates. The Class of "78" would like to thank all of our sponsors for their guidance. But, a special thanks goes to Mike Cappitti, for without his time and effort, the Class of "78" would not have been a success. This year's Panther Girls' Swim Team finished a pleasing season of competition. The winning season was credited to the swimmers' spirit, the long hard practices, and the constant drive for perfection from Coach Sylvia Sidwell. The top swimmers for the Varsity were: Janet Hardy, Valeri Paul, Gayle Paul, and Regina Woodmansee. The Junior Varsity had such leaders as Jill Keller, Michele Greeff, and Kathy Gilligan. The Panthers had only one returning varsity player this year, and that was standout Senior forward Tom Moore. Moore's blazing shooting touch was one of the bright spots this year, as he averaged 15.2 points per game. This including games of 26, 25, and 23 in League play. Although they won only two games, the Panthers played exciting ball, and could have easily won 5 to 7 more games. Two Seniors who sparked the crowd with their tough quick defense were John Dominquez and Kevin Bean. The Panthers had a strong inside game this season, anchored by Seniors Gary Ubrick, Tim Manly and Jeff Jensen. These three players were the team's rebounders and inside intimedators. Three Juniors received much playing time this year, which will be valuable next season. Hot-Shooting forward Mike Shaw, Cam Edwards, and Gary Noack, could give the Panthers a brighter outlook for the future so, despite the record, the Panthers always gave the crowd their moneys worth! The Junior Varsity Basketball Team had an overall record of 4-14, and record of 4-12 in DVAL play. They finished the year in Seventh place in the league. The junior Panthers were led this year by 6'-6" sophomore Pat Bailey. He lead the team with a 12.7 points per game average. Scorers for the J.V.'s were sophomores Mike Acosta, Mike Bell and Junior Rich Trabold. Trabold was also the team's leading rebounder. Helping the Panthercubs inside was sophomore Jeff Siino. The team really made an improvement toward the end of the season which is a good sign for the future. Dribble Dribble down the court, Basketball is my favorite sport. You must be quick, you must be sly, l've,got to make the basket, to break that tie. Quick, cut through the key and there's your play, If the person with the ball would only look your way. The pass finally comes, but hits your knee, "Oops" too late now, you're three seconds in the key. Now you're on defense, you fade back in your zone. But before you know it the whistle's blown. The skunk-man claims you pushed on the play, While you swear up and down you were three feet away. The first one is in so another one she gets, But it goes rather crooked, therefore the rim it hits. My arms are stretched high for the important rebound, I grab it and pounce both feet on the ground. I quickly look down court for a hopeful fast break, Someones open, I throw it, the basket we make! The buzzer sounds, and the game we won. Thank god this game is finally done. As I'm jumping up and down, I bump my head. I awake and find the covers off my bed. Just then my mother walks in the door, And sees my covers all over the floor. "My goodness what happened to your covers in the night? You'd think You'd gotten into a terrible fight!" "Yeah . . . that's what happened," I said with a stall. "Either that, mom laughed, or you were playing basketbaII!" In commenting on the Antioch Boys' Swim Team for this year, Coach DeCristofaro replied with this letter of his personal comments. When asked to comment on this years swim team, three words crept into my head. These three words were Hope, Frustration, and Reality. As I was looking forward to this years swimming season I saw the posibility of having the best team ever. I would not only have numbers but also talent and lots of it. I could hardly wait to start the season. When the first day of signups came around, my frustration began. Several very good swimmers did not sign up. I was hoping for a team of 26 members, but only had 15 sign-up and stay. Later in the season our ranks were cut by one when John Vallis came down with phenmonia and was lost for the season. The reality of this season as seasons of the past is having very few good swimmers. This years team has three seniors. Carl Beckwith is the most versatile in that he swims all events well. Bill Kendrick is one of the fastest in the freestyle ' X--A sprints. Cisco Gonzales has led the way in being one of the best divers in Antioch's history. This years team has three Juniors. . Ken Bilbo is an all around swimmer who can fill any event. Keith Beckwith has developed into a fine intermediate swim- mer and sprinter. Dave Fuhr- man has filled the gap of a backstroker. Rounding out the Varsity is Perry Phipps a sophomore who is an outstand- ing swimmer. 'ts w A J na km.: bb - ' : "-' ' ' 1. , -ff ,L 'Nl "fag, . Our Junior year was a very profitable one. lt was important to raise as much money as possible so next year there would be no financial problems. We had many money making projects throughout the year. We started out with night school sales Monday through Thursday, then cokes at school dances and football games, a disco dance, Valentine Post office, selling mistle toe during Christmas, also flowers at the Country Fair Day, class dues, class float and Junior Prom. The two biggest events this year were the Homecoming float and the Jr. Prom. I'm proud to say they were both a great success. The float theme was "lt's Our Time In "79". The Junior Prom theme was "A Place in the Sun". Our colors were yellow, orange, and red. The band was Self-Expressions. Class T-Shirts are being ordered with out class motto, "Lettin' it Shine in 79". We have a great class with fantastic ideas that will shine throughout our Senior year, and make it a memorable experience.! Flight now our class budget is over S2,500. Your gonna' find your place in the sun and such were the students on the evening on March 4, 1978 when the Juniors put on their annual class dance. Starting at 9 O'clock lasting until 1 O'clock in the morning, the Juniors and their guests celebrated the joyful occasion. The day before the dance, the Juniors with help from a few senior friends transformed the high school cafeteria into a place of dance and song, a place in the sun with colors of bright natural earth tones of reds, yellows, and oranges. From the bay area came the band "Self Expressions". All in all the students enjoyed themselves to their extremes and stored in their minds a night to remember. ills .-,n'o' .W J., -lfnglfnlil x -1-fit"-.. 'Tn' 'I , ,g,.4,.,.5 U, . The many clubs and organizations involved in the fun joined together to make it a very enjoyable event. The band "Rainbows' End" kept the crowd on their feet while ping pong and volleyball kept them in shape. Also in conjunction with the Fair was the Don Sander's Slave Sale. Don Sanders, a Senior at Antioch as seriously injured when his motorcycle collided with a moving car earlier this year. A special fund was established which consisted of proceeds from the Slave Sale and donations from the crowd. Over S150 was raised to defer his medical costs. Our first big project was the contruction of our float. The theme was "We're on Our Way Up". We took third, as most Sophomore classes do. The theme was correct though, during Spirit Week we proved it, by taking the spirit trophy for being the most spirited class. We sold derbies during Spirit Week for the Derby Day Contest. On March 18th we held our biggest fund raising projects. We held a Car Wash and three bake sales in town. Both were an all day events, and everyone who helped had a pretty good time. The Sophomore Hop was here in no time. The theme was "Emotions", and the colors were rainbow. The band that played was a local band called "Tight Squeeze". There were over a hundred and twenty couples who attended. The last thing the class did together was elect new officers. I would like to take this space and wish the new officers good luck, I am sure the rest ofthe class agrees. Well that's all, have a good summer. Hard Working People ,yur ua-L .J ilk An institution left Antioch High School this year in the person of Mrs. Elva Hunt, custodian. Mrs. Hunt was more than a custodian for over 25 years she attended every extra curricular activity held at Antioch High School. It was only during the last few years that Mrs. Hunt was not as active due to certain policies within her department. Mrs. Hunt could remember names, dates, and classes. She was a walking history of Antioch High School. Frequently she reminisced about the many experiences she had during her years at Antioch High School. Mrs. Hunt was an integral part of Antioch High School. She will be missed by many and remembered by all who, over the years, came in contact with her.
