Combine a new freshman class with a bunch of exuberant seniors and you're cooking up quite an initiation. Some of the activities dreamed up for the freshmen by the Senior Class were a whipped cream war, a beauty parlor with a fantastic make-up application, a soda race, and a banana-eating contest. Earlier in the week, the sophomores and upperclass- men paid a grand total of over $500.00 for the freshmen during the Slave Sale. 20 Antelope Graffiti. . . ... THE GAME: Football’73-’74 During the summer, excitement begins to build as the Rams look forward to the pros- pect of another winning football season. After starting the season by beating Camp Verde 15-6, the squad followed with a 10-7 win over Tomb- stone, but was dealt a hard blow when Lake Havasu took a 49-6 victory. Antelope played Cetys and won 21-6. Bagdad fol- lowed, a 20-0 Ram victory. A 7-6 win over Wickenburg was followed by a 27-0 stomp on Gila Bend. The Rams lost once more, this time to Mohave, and then rolled St. John's for a 44-0 Homecoming victory. (Right) Danny Millner travels down the field, pulling in yardage. Glen Rockwell was chosen for the second all-conference team, and Bobby Smith received an all-confer- ence honorable mention. Rial was also chosen for the second all-state team. He is also up for consideration for the High School All- American Award. 68 . . . It’s Not Just Bouncing a Ball. . . Basketball is a tense, grip- ping sport. It's exhausting for the boys on the court and the crowds in the bleachers. Sitting in the grandstand and being so close to the action, you feel al- most as if you were running down the court yourself. The expres- sions on the faces of the athletes, the sweat, the tensed and released muscles; all of them become a part of you as you be- come engrossed in the action. The pictures on these two pages are an expression of the emo- tions rampant during a game. X 70 Ram Cagers Take First B-West Title of Year for Antelope The 1973-74 season got off to a mixed start. We'd win one, we'd lose one. After a few weeks, the team really shaped up and by the time we entered conference play the team was well polished. We were headed for the conference championship until Mohave set us back on February 1, 1974. We won all the rest of our con- ference games, looking forward to March 1, when we would meet Mohave again. When the game started on that night, we stood 8-1 in conference play. The game was tense all the way through and at the end of the fourth quarter, overtime was necessary. Both the fans from Mohave and the enor- mous crowd rooting for the Rams were on their feet. The cheering was deafening as the game ended 52-51--in our favor. The victory gave us the right to meet Mohave again to play for the con- ference title. The follow- ing Monday, both teams met in Parker. After another close game, the Rams won 65-61, taking the B-West title, our first conference championship of the year. Frosh—They’ve Just Begun The freshman eagers, coached by Mr. Frans, did double duty this year. Along with their regular schedule, they took over the j.v. schedule and did quite well with it. The Rams out-ran, out-jumped, and out- threw their opponents to take the meet by a large margin. Lyle Hos- kin (Left) took a second place in the state meet, and Jim Newman also placed highly. Tracketeers are S. Amavisca, R. Beus, J. Calaway, C. Correa, F. Gomez, P. Heide, L. Hoskin, M. Hultstrand, B. Jones, D. Leavitt, S. McDaniel, R. Merrill, D. Millner, J. Murdock, J. Newman, R. Permar, D. Phipps, D. Quintero, S. Raynor, G. Rockwell, J. Rodriguez, G. Rojas, E. Stewart, T. Stricklin, and T. Williams. 77 Track. . . Track is an unusual sport; during a meet, much more emphasis is placed on the individual, rather than on the team as a whole. A track team is made up of individual athletes doing their thing --runners, jumpers, throwe rs--and the suc- cess of the team depends entirely on how fast, how high, how far each man goes. There is something compelling, something hypnotic about track. Perhaps it lies in the knowledge that you're out there by yourself, or perhaps it's the feel of the wind rushing past your body, or that mo- ment when you've left the earth and are sus- pended in mid-air, drawing your body in, willing it not to touch the bar. Midway through the evening, Gary and Marj were crowned Prince Charming and Cinderella. May 18, 1974. The transfor- mation was very convincing. The cafeteria was no longer just a cafeteria. The Junior Class turned it into a replica of a garden of the Far East. Entrance was gained by passing under a traditional Oriental archway hung with paper lanterns, crossing a diminutive wooden bridge which passed by a sparkling fountain. Candlelit tables bordered the dance area. Music was by The Zippers, a fantastic group from Phoenix. Highlighting the evening was the coronation of the Prom King and Queen. Candidates for the honor were Gary Brockman and Adell Allen (Left), Willy Doster and Janet Murdock, (Middle), and Phillip Eykamp and Linda McElhaney. Phil and Linda were crowned King and Queen. Sweethearts Adell and Marj The special girl in the lives of AUHS Key Clubbers is Adell Allen, their chapter Sweetheart. At the FFA Sweetheart Dinner held on May 16, 1974, in the AUHS cafeteria, the FFA chapter chose Marj Blohm for their Sweetheart.
