Gene Smalls scored 21 of the 33 points with Pete Burns a junior fullback scoring the remaining 12 points. Charlie Sepkaski handled the team well from the quarterback position and Tony Cooke and Dick Brozek showed up well de- fensively. Angelo Fisco who gained most of the Tiger ground yardage was the shining star for the Leaven- worth team. Shelton-14 Ansonia-7 The favored Ansonia team received a slight jolt in its hopes for a perfect season when Shelton scored a surprising victory under the lights. Shelton overpow- ered Ansonia in the first half with ohn Saffo and ohn Viggiano scoring touchdowns. Ansonia was held score- less until the final period when All-State candidate Gene Smalls scored the Lavender s lone touchdown on a four yard plunge. However the Hnal score could have been quite different, In the second period quarterback Charlie Sepkaski attempted a 14 yard pass to Gene Smalls, who, before the ball reached him, was pushed by a Shelton defender. The referee seeing the infrac- tion of rules and thinking that Smalls would not catch the pass blew the whistle instead of dropping the pen- alty marker. Smalls caught the ball and crossed the goal line. The officials nullified the play ruling that the ball was dead when the whistle was blown an thus deprived Ansonia of at least a tie and possibly a victory. Ansonia-2 7 Crosby-7 Again the spotlight centered on Ansonia s one man scoring show Gene Smalls who tallied four touch- downs and three extra points for all the Lavender scor- ing. Supporting him with fine defensive work were Tony Cooke Tom Slade Pat Nolan and Al Piccolo. jack O'Dea scored Crosby s touchdown in the second period on a 25 yard run. Ansonia-14 Stamford-7 Facing a much larger and tougher opponent than in its previous games the Lavender squad combined the strong offensive work of Gene Smalls Pete Burns and Charlie Sepaski, with a fine defensive line, con- sisting of Andy Spak, Lou Edwards, and Ray Matajek, to defeat Stamford The entrre game was closely con tested and rt was not until the final perrod when Gene Smalls ran 14 yards for the tre breaking touchdown that the game was finally decided Ansonra-40 Derby 0 Once more Ansonra s offensive machine proved too powerful for a weak Derby lrne There was no stop ping Gene Smalls as he added four more touchdowns to hrs already envrous record He notched hrs fourth touchdown after taking a prtchout and travelling 71 yards to the Ansonra goal lrne I-Irs brother Pete Smalls and Gary Chrostowskr accounted for the other Laven der touchdowns Ansonra 5 3 Wrlby-O Now boasting a proud 4 1 record the highly favored forces of Coach Jarvis overwhelmed the undermanned Wrlby team Touchdowns were scored by Ansonra rn every perrod of the game wrth Gene Smalls scorrng five touchdowns and Pete Burns joe Blando and Gary Chrostowskr one each Defensrvely Bob Keller the Wrlby offense Ansonra 53 Torrington 17 With fine support from Charlie Sepaskr and Pete Burns as well as Gene Smalls the fighting Lavender squad of Coach Jarvis picked up rts fifth straight vrc tory and brought rts record to srx wins and one defeat Once agarn Gene Smalls proved to be the big gun scor rng three touchdowns and an extra pomt bringing hrs pornts scored total to 142 just 5 short of the high school record of 147 Pete Burns becoming more and more adept at the fullback positron tallied Ansonra s other touchdown Bernie Smith and Dave Frauenhofer scored for Torrington Ansonra 39 Sacred Heart-0 Having rnyured hrs ankle rn the Torrington game Gene Smalls was forced to srt thrs game out This left many rn doubt as to how Ansonra would do wrthout rts one man scorrng show Where Smalls left off Sep- kaskr began He scored the first touchdown of the game with a dazzling 65 yard run He scored agarn in the fourth perrod from four yards out threw a touchdown pass to Chrostowskr and threw two extra point passes to Keller Then Pete Smalls Tony Cooke and Frank Gursky added to the Lavender scorrng with a touch down each Defensrvely Tom Slade Mrke Adantr and A1 Prccolo held Sacred Hearts offensive surges Naugatuck 2 7 Ansonra-O An excellent turnout of Ansonra fans watched the Lavender suffer rts second defeat of the year at the hands of rts brtter rrval Naugatuck Led by rts All State quarterback Tom Kopp who tallied 18 of the Greyhounds 27 pornts Naugatuck succeeded rn defeating Ansonra for the thrrd succes The first perrod was evenly played with neither team scorrng Durrng the second perrod however Nauga tuck unleashed rts full offensive attack scorrng 13 pornts more than enough for the vrctory The Grey hounds two other touchdowns were scored rn the second half Ansonras Gene Smalls also an All Stater farled to break the Lavenders scorrng record the mam reason berng the poor offensive blocking which prevented hrs making the necessary long run Even though the defensive ends farled to stop the Greyhounds end runs the mrddle of the Lavender lrne consrstrng of Tom Slade A1 Prccolo and Paul Griffin held many of Naugatucks offensive surges TRI CAPTAINS GENE SMALLS TONY COOKE PATRICK NOLAN , I ' I , - 1 n - - . .
