The Class of 1946 has come to the crossroads of Life from
which highways stretch out in many directions. In a short time the
members of this class will be traveling down many different roads
all leading away from Anoka High School. Before you leave I
should like to tell you that it has been a pleasure to work with you,
to see you grow in stature and to develop in ability, to rejoice with
you in your achievements, and to experience with you the thrills
of your victories. i
May I congratulate the editorial staff on the excellent work done
in the publication of the 1946 Anokan which will serve as a beauti-
ful treasure house of precious memories ,in the years to come.
MORRIS BYE

CLASS PRCPHECY
I see, my dear graduates, your futures in my crystal ball. The ball grows
darker, the thunder claps, the lights grow dim, and the voice of huba-huba is
heard in my ears. I shall be carried in a trance--into another land. Listen! I,
Madame Bea Esse, am speaking. Take Heed!
I hear loud voices-ah, a lawyer is arguing a case. Well, upon my soul, if
it isn't Russell Davis, the famous criminal lawyer, who is representing the
defendant, Gordon Thurston, in the case of the state vs. G. T. All the facts
haven't been uncovered as yet, but it is believed .that in his endeavor, to pro-
mote business, Mr. Thurston, the county coroner, mistook the body of Wanda
Wesp, who was overcome with gas while cooking omelets, for one of his
corpses and immediately buried her. The jury consists of Dick Peterson,
Eleanor Andrews, Pat Barstow, Pat Schenk, and Daryl Crapser.
In another part of town'I see a hot campaign waging. Shanty Town is
ablaze as "Honest Dan Wallick" and "More with Milton Moen" light it out
at the polls for the exalted position of mayor of Shanty Town.
The youth of this day as ten years ago in 1946, pick only the top in enter-
tainment. This will explain why a huge crowd is expected at the Riverlyn
Dance Palace, operated by Beatrice and Helen Goodrich, Saturday night where
Roy Schaefer, one man band complete with drum, trumpet, piano and har-
monica, will make his debut. At the grand opening of "Ping's Court," an
elite night club, Ping plans to feature john Perrin and his Dancing Dogs.
As I gaze deeper and deeper I see suds, suds, and more suds, The Spohn
girls, Mary and jane, are busy breaking new records as the world renowned
dishwashing team. They got their start as dishwashers in Dick Dawson's
Farmer's Hash House.
The Wedding Bells are tolling for Shirley Lapham as she awaits her South
American The romance began with a Spanish correspondence course.
Delores Zimmerman Lehn, famous Wall Street speculator, is still support-
ing her husband joseph Lehn, who she hopes will eventually graduate from
Anoka High School.
Policeman Paul Abrams, James Leger, and Gene Pratt are on the search
of the notorious opium peddler, Jean Lawson. She was last seen by Anoka
bus driver, john Sweney, peddling dope in front of the Little Sisters of the
Poor Home in Minneapolis. It is thought that she is hiding out behind the
bar at Ted Buzze1li's Spaghetti Sphere.
The immaculate streets of Anoka, cleaned by our ace street cleaner, Harry
Lowry, are echoing with the cries of the Swiss Mountain Yodeler, Ray Rustong.
Ray's latest trip to the U. S. was a novelty due to the fact that he was rowed
all the way across the Atlantic in a dinghy.
26
CLASS PROPHECY lconfinuedl
I also see in my crystal ball a new type of Fuller Brush salesman-Robert
Ruschmeyer. At the moment he is using his high pressure salesmanship on
housewife, Lorraine Dickman.
Grover Brown and Don Rosquist can be found in their under-ground cata-
comb attempting to find a solution to the problem of what the exact speed
of locomotion of an earthworm is. But watch out, men, for I see a "Bulldozer"
operated by John Weaver coming your way.
Amy Lund, a dentist's assistant, is taking over the practice of Don Pehrson,
DDT, unknown to him. Her partner in crime is Helen Canney, who is trying
to distract Dr. Pehrson by playing hopfscotch on the ledge outside his office
window.
Marlys Reynolds and Rita Ward are vying for the position of secretary to
Dick Closson, manager of the Bijou Theater. The great pianist, Elizabeth
Maguire, is being featured there. Tickets will be sold at the door by Edythe
Ehlen and Ann Parker.
A new exterminator for termites is being tested by Andy Anderson-so
when you think of termites, think of Andy.
Social welfare worker, Vera Malamen, is puzzled over the problem of Jerry
Jensen who is in need of a pension, which the county refuses to grant him.
She has taken the case up with Judge Leo Foley.
The Schmelzer twins are archery instructors at the Y WCA. Their prize
pupil, Marie Horbal recently won an archery contest at Csseo and Donna
Walton and Mary Lou Campbell are instructors in soccer.
Ray Peterson, Rosie Ramacher, and Joan Heslop were innocent bystanders
at the murder of Ruby Johnson's ranch foreman, Harold Schwandt. When
Evelyn Merkins was accused, Miss Johnson said it was perfectly legal because,
"He done Merk's sister wrong."
Jean and Jeanette Hiltz are currently being starred in a new Broadway
production. Bob Smith is the director, so it is sure to be a success. Also in
the cast are Frances Blanchard, Joyce Brooks, and Peggy Personius. R. M.
Johnson and Wesley Sims' Band furnish the music.
Dick Flath and RBie Johnson's voices may be heard daily on a big radio
hookup. They have become successful radio announcers-or is it livestock
reporters? Their 35100.00 per week salary Ceachj is being mostly spent on
the bi-annual trips up North. Lois Ann Lindgren sings commercials on this
same hook-up.
I see many other faces-but wait, they are fading out. Wait! Wait! It is
of no use dear students, the remainder of you must plunge into the future
without my guidance.

FOOTBALL
Anoka's 1945 Tornado football squad, with Coach Gordy Paschka at the
helm, rode through a tough nine-game schedule winning six contests and
losing three.
Although not considered a top flight club in state gridiron circles, the
Anokans did get their share of glory from the 41-7 drubbing they handed
Chisholm, number one team from the Iron Range.
In contrast to the championship squad of 1944, only six of this year's first
team were seniors.
Throughout the season, the following boys held starting positions:

BASEBALL
l945 BASEBALL SEASON
Anoka High School's 1945 baseball squad, coached by Gordy Paschka,
brought more fame to the local athletic department as it pocketed the Surbur-
ban League Championship in its first year in the league and then captured the
coveted Class M State Baseball Championship at Carlton College.
Behind the hitting power that Coach Paschka instilled in his team, the
Anokans lost only 3 games during the entire season to definitely rate as the
number one team in Anoka's Baseball history.
The Anoka nine, which was gifted with gold baseballs for their State and
Surburban triumphs included the following lettermen: Jack Rainbow, first
base, Gordy Dahlheimer, second base, Billy Bye, shortstop, George Ziegler,
third base, Bud Rainbow, catcher, Dick Sorenson and Johnny Weaver, pitcher,
Jerry Jacob, Ray Pipenhagen, Jerry johnson, outfield, and Vernon Hingtgen,

WRESTLING
Wrestling, which was started only last year on Anoka's competitive athletic
list, experienced a thoroughly successful season as the Tornado grapplers, under
Coach Gordon Paschka, won five of their nine meets and sent one man to the
state tournament.
As individual standouts, Wendy Bearl, Lauren Patchen, and Buddy Brooks
were Coach Paschka's top men. Bearl lost only one match during the entire
season, that in the regional tournament, Patchen and Brooks turned in bril-
liant performances time and time again to rank high on Anoka's wrestling
roster.
Lettermen for the 1945--46 season included Westlund, Shultz, Bearl, Wayne
Wallace, Lauren, Patchen, John Ghostley, Charles Lindberg, Dave Reed, joey
Lehn, and Buddy Brooks.

BAND
The music lending organization of our high school is the Anoka High School
marching and concert band under the able leadership of Lauren Buslee. This
group has been very successful in its interpretation of all types of music from
marches and classical pieces, to popular numbers, which display the ability of
its members.
We are proud of our band and needless to say, what would a football game
be like without the precision maneuvers and letter formations which they dis-
played at all the gamesg and the victory punch they gave to the pepfests and
the pep they furnished during the basketball games.
Band oflicers for this year were: President, R. M. johnsong Vice President,
Donna Waltong Secretary-treasurer, Sue Spurzem. Forming the band council
or law making group with these ofhcers are Amy Lund from the Senior class,
Rosemary Weaver from the Sophomore class, and Donald Elvig from the
Freshman class.
46
CHORUS
The Anoka High School Chorus is composed of Senior High School students
under the supervision of Miss Ruth Hallenberg.
A quartet was organized consisting of the following boys: Dick Closson,
Lyle Payne, Bob Benolkin, and john Weaver.
At the beginning of the year a girls' triple trio was organized consisting of:
Margaret Lynn, Jean Helland, Dorothy Maerz, Marie Horbal, Rosemary Jack-
son, jane Spohn, Pat Douglass, Crystal Clark, and Jeanette Hiltz with Lois
Lindgren as accompanist. A new group was chosen at the beginning of the
second semester consisting of: jean Helland, Marlys Hallberg, Elaine Peter-
son, Marie Horbal, Jane Spohn, Mary Spohn, Pat Douglass, Crystal Clark,
and Jeanette Hiltz.
A Public Christmas program was presented in which the chorus took part
with the singing of carols and hymns.
47
A CLUB
The A Club is made up of all boys in high school who
have earned a letter or the equivalent during the school
year.
The president of the A Club is John Weaver, with
Buddy Brooks as secretary-treasurer.
The A Club sponsors a spring formal and an all school
dance each year.
The advisor of the A Club is Mr. Paschka.
48
GAA CCUNCIL
The Girls' Athletic Association, with the assistance of Miss Donnelly, was
able to accomplish a great many things.
Selling candy, pop corn, and potato chips at games proved to be a more
profitable business than sponsoring a dance.
The basketball championship is held by the senior team. Out of town
basketball games were enjoyed and helped carry out sportsmanship, one of
the purposes of the GAA.
The informal initiation was held in April. The president for next year
had not been announced at time of publication. The Mixer was held in
October with a "Kid Party" as the theme.
GAA COUNCIL
The GAA council, which consists of senior oH'icers and leaders of different
sports, is the governing body of the GAA.

ANOKAN STAFF
We, the Anokan Staff, have attempted to put in book
form, pictures and events which will bring back many
happy memories of your last years in high school.
We are grateful to Don Pehrson and Dean Zopfi, our
photographers, and Mr. Wilcox, who has given us invalu-
able assistance in the compiling of this annual.
50
ANOKAHI STAFF
The Anokahi has been handicapped this year, not by the lack of a publisher,
but through lack of finances.
They were very fortunate in obtaining the Anoka Herald as their publisher
early in the year, but because of high cost of newsprint and the surprisingly
small number of subscriptions, the Anokahi could be published only once
every month.
Despite these difficulties, the co-editors, Mary Lautzenheiser and Mudge
Bonnell, did a laudable job of producing the best Anokahi ever.
51
THESPIAN SCCIETY
Thespian Troupe number 596 began a full year of activities with its initia-
tion of sixteen members September 11, 1945. During the course of the year
plays were presented to the public under the direction of Miss Hoglund, troupe
sponsor and head of the Speech Department.
The plays with their leading characters were:
"Don't Take My Penny" ................................ ......... P at Douglass
"Imaginary Invalid" ........ .... ......... D i ck Flath
"Nine Girls" .................................,............................................ Helen Canney
At their formal dance and initiation on December 22, eight students be-
came new members. Several members helped to install a new troupe at Cold
Springs, Minnesota on January 24.
Other activities during the year consisted of skits and plays which were pre-
sented to Philolectian, Washington PTA, Franklin PTA, and other groups.
52
FILM CPERATORS
This year the film operators, along with showing films,
also showed filmstrips and Hlmslides. There are usually
three operators every period of the day. However, there
are twenty-four operators with jerry Jensen as chief
operator and Miss Benson and Mr. Wilcox as advisors.
Besides showing films to the school, these operators
presented many films to other organizations.
53
SPANISH CLUB
The Spanish Club, "Los Fieles," was organized in September of 1945. The
purpose of this club is to give to all those interested in Spanish an opportunity
to practice the language. The meetings are held once a month and are con-
ducted in Spanish. The club has twenty-live members.
TMJ yearlv 0 jficery are:
Prerident ........... ............ B arbara johnson
Secretary ...... ....... D elores Zimmerman
Treamrer .,.............................................................. Shirley Lapham
The club is under the excellent supervision of Miss Donnelly, Spanish
instructor.
GERMAN CLUB
The German Club is composed of students who have had or are taking
German. At the first meeting the following oflicers were elected: jean Hiltz,
president, Margaret Moe, vice president, Alice Bader, secretary, and Betty
Bader, treasurer.
One of the highlights of the year's activities was the singing of Christmas
carols in the halls just before Christmas vacation.
At the meetings instructive and entertaining games were played.
The club, consisting of twenty members, has Miss Brown as advisor.
54
LIBRARY CLUB
The Library Club is a group of girls who volunteer to help with the checking in and
out of books, filing, typing and poster-making, writing over-due notices, pastings, shel-
lacing and going on errands.
A Christmas party for the librarian assistants was held on December 12. A delicious
lunch was served and gifts were exchanged.
M-iss Nelson, the librarian, is the advisor of the club. The club is composed of the
following girls:
Marjorie Martineau .......,,........................................... . ....... First Period
Doris Dyck ,,,,,,.,,,,.,.. .........,. F l1'St Period

One of the most interesting clubs in Anoka High School is the Science Club. Mrs.
Clark is the advisor, with Robert Goodrich, president and Totsy Olson as secretary-
treasuter. ,
U Regular meetings were held throughout the year wiith various members of the club
in charge of the programs. Mr. Frank Heilman gave us an instructive talk on ggeology,
also cosmetics were made, pictures developed, and many scientific experiments were
performed. During Easter vacation the club took a field trip to the University of
Minnesota.
The club recently acquired membership in the Science Clubs of America.
55
STUDENT COUNCIL
The 1945-46 Student Council was headed by john Weaver, all-school presi-
dent, in all its activities for the year. The other officers were Don Pehrson,
vice president, Marjorie Bonnell, secretary, and Rita Ward, treasurer.
The council sponsored a series of auditorium programs and also took charge
of both football and basketball homecomings. The representatives on the
council, in addition, aided in both the dental and Christmas seal drives.
As a member of the Northwest Federation of Student Councils, the Student
Council sent two representatives to their convention in Wisconsin on May
fourth and fifth.
