FACULTY
FROM OUR SUPERINTENDANT . . .
I am happy to get this opportunity to voice my appreciation of
the excellent record that the students ot Anoka High School are mak-
ing in all their activities. The spirit, the enthusiasm, the loyalty dis-
played by all the students who play in athletic contests, by those who
are members of musical organizations, by those who publish the news-
paper and the annual, by those who participate in dramatic produc-
tions make for a high degree of success and bring glory and honor to
the students and to the school.
The Class of I945 is endeavoring to make the achievements of
the year a matter of permanent record by publishing the Anokan. The
editorial staff has worked hard into the still hours of the night to make
this book an excellent publication, and I am sure that as the years roll
by you will value it more and more as a treasure chest of memories
of happy high school days at Anoka High School.
Morris Bye, superintendent

CLASSES
SENIOR HISTORY
September, I94I, marked the beginning of the
remarkable class of I944-45. As is to be expec-
ted, the first week was spent in locating classes.
Algebra was considered the subject of the year,
it being one of the two "electives": so we deem-
ed it fitting to impress the 7th and 8th graders
with our superior mentality by relating to "X"
the unknown quantity, and carefully presenting
the difficult steps, in obtaining the answer. When
we had finished the necessary steps, "X" usually
still remained the unknown quantity! We soon
accustomed ourselves to the surroundings, vowed
to learn something, be it ever so little, and as-
sembled to elect class officers. Those chosen
were: Kenny Dahlheimer, president: Madrene
Black, vice-president: Ed Ward, treasurer: and
Anna Lou Atckison, secretary. ln December of
that year the United States entered World War
ll. Girls' knitting classes were started, but the
squares being different and of so varied sizes,
hopes of ever making an afghan faded. When
some of the older boys whom we knew so well
enlisted in the Armed Forces, we realized the
tremendous task that lay ahead of us, and knew
it would demand all our sincere efforts.
Came our sophomore year, and we all felt a
certain degree of self-confidence. Our presence
in the mighty upper halls soon became tolerable
to the juniors and seniors. When the novelty of
the second floor had worn off, we settled into
a rut and little of consequence happened. High-
lights of that year were dissecting frogs in bio-
logy and the famous geometry surveying tours.
Officers for that year were: Jerry Johnson, presi-
dent: Warren Blair, vice-president: Joan Way,
secretary: and Leroy Jones, treasurer.
Our junior year was marked by the tragedy of
the War Bond Drive contest between the seniors
and us. Although we lost, we took our beating
with a grin and were able to be proud of the
huge success of the contest. At our first class
meeting we elected Paul Heilman, president:
Jack Rainbow, vice-president: Priscilla Herbold,
secretary: and Ed Ward, treasurer. The main
event of the year was the Junior-Senior Prom.
We entertained the seniors royally jif we do say
so ourselvesj with a chow mein dinner, the theme
being China. The Mixed Chprus was started that
year, and many juniors took part. A number of
our boys enlisted in the different branches of the
Armed Forces.
We entered our senior year with some joy and
some regret. The halls seemed empty without the
usual upperclassmen, but we did rather enioy
"setting the pace" for the lower classes. Our
football team "put Anoka on the map", and we
had outstanding teams in other sports also. Offi-
cers for the year were: Ed Larson, president:
Paul Heilman, vice-president: Amy Waldeen,
secretary, John Spencer, treasurer. Students free-
ly participated in music, dramatics, and other ex-
tra curricular activities. Then, almost before we
could realize it, we were graduating.
During the four-year history of our class, our
country has been engaged in this World War.
Many of our own classmates have left us already,
and more will be leaving, Those who are gone
left us the responsibility of carrying the torch of
Anoka High School. Our hope is that we have
succeeded.
And thus ends the history of the senior class
of I944-45. We salute our successors and be-
gone!

school who have received theotficial letter "A" in some sport.
This year the "A" Club has about thirty members. Be-
cause most of the members of the "A" Club became eligible
by winning a letter in football, it was decided that the toot-
ball captain should become president.
The "A" Club has managed in the last tew years to leave
a fund ot about titty dollars in the treasury for the next year's
club to start on. This fund is usually built up to at least a hun-
dred dollars during the year. This money is obtained by spon-
soring the annual football homecoming dance. Last year the
excess money was spent on a formal for the members of the
"A" Club. This dance was very successful, and we hope that
it may become an annual event.

The I944 version ot Anoka's track team made one ot its most out-
standing showings in recent years.
As their main accomplishment, the Tornado cinderists decisively
won the l6th District Track meet, held at Anoka. Another lst place won
by the Anoka team was in the quadrangular meet lAnoka, North Branch,
Cambridge, Pine lslandl held at North Branch.
ln a similar quadrangular contest lWhite Bear, Anoka, Stillwater,
North St. Paull at Anoka, the locals ran second to the winning White
Bear tracksters.
Anoka's tinal entry, being in the regional conclave, tound them plac-
ing third.
Led by Coach Gordon Paschka, the Anoka track squad was composed
ot 20 boys, I2 ot whom earned letters tor their outstanding work.
Those twelve letterman were: Douglas Brooks, Bill Bye, Willis Castle,
Robert Douglass, Robert Jacob, Jack Mclzeters, Paul Neumann, Virgil Os-
wald, Kenneth Patterson, Allen Sorteberg, William Wanamaker, and Don-
ald Wuest.
BASEBALL
Anoka brought home its third straight district base-
ball title after a tough season in I944, by winning 9
games on an eleven game slate.
Coached by Jack Campbell, the Tornadoes started
their campaign on May 6th by whipping Osseo, II-14.
Stillwater capsized the Anokans in their next tilt, 4-l,
but this only spurred on the Tornado.diamond crew,
as they downed the three following toes: Osseo, Cam-
bridge, and Stillwater, very decisively.
In the invitational baseball tournament held at Carl-
ton College on May l3th, the Anokans won their first
game 5-4, over Faribault, but were defeated by Austin,
3-I, in the quarter-finals.
At home again, the Tornadoes completed their sea-
son with victories over St. Francis, Elk River, Cam-
bridge, and Braham. The last tilt, won by a 3-2 mar-
gin, gave the locals the district championship.
Lettermen on Coach Campbell's I94-4 squad were:
Bill Bye, Willis Castle, Curtis Chamberlain, Gordon
Dahlheimer, Jerry Jacob, Robert Jacob, Jack Rainbow,
Jerry Raney, John Weaver, James Ziegler, and Jack

ANOKAHI STAFF
The Anolcahi statf, due to wartime restrictions and difficulties found
in obtaining a printer, was forced to limit the publication of the school
paper during the past year to one issue per month. The staff was com-
prised ot titty junior and senior high students, who were advised by
Miss Fleischmann. The Anolcahi, in addition to its usual activities, spon-
sored the first dance ot the season: they also edited two special papers,
one ot which was devoted to the proposed youth center and the other,
a special April Fool's edition. The position ot editor-in-chiet, to whom
tell the unpleasant task of receiving all gripes and insults, was most
bravely and capably filled by Joan Way. Some new and more attractive
ads which were used this year brightened the paper to a great extent.

In spite of major obstacles and unfortunate handicaps,
we, the staff, have diligently attempted to bring you the fin
est annual in the history of Anoka High School. We sincerely
hope that this annual will bring back many memories of the
happy times that you have had these last years in high school.
We are indebted to Bob Blewett for his artistic contri-
bution and to Kenny Erickson for his untiring efforts as head
of the photography department.
Mr. Wilcox, our able advisor, has given us invaluable as-
sistance in constructing this annual.

Last spring a new organization was introduced into Anoka High
School. Eighteen students became the charter members in Troupe No.
596 of The National Thespian Society.
Service is the keynote of the organization and students who are
inclined to rest on their "honors" subject themselves to suspension.
Thespian membership is proof that a student has more than aver-
age interest in dramatics and has the ability to participate successfully
in dramatic productions in high school and college.
When school began this fall there were only tive active members
of Anolca's Troupe. Throughout the year, plays have been produced
under the direction of the Troupe sponsor, Miss Hoglund: each play has
made several students eligible for membership.
lt is the aim ot each Speech student to become a member ot a
group with such a spirit of work, cooperation and loyalty: and after
becoming a Thespian, to live up to the motto ot The National Thespian
Society: "Act well your part: there all the honor lies."

G.A.A. ACTIVITIES
The Girls Athletic Association, under the direction of Miss Ora Miller, has a membership of 46
members. The purpose of the student organization is the furthering of mental and physical develop-
ment through athletic competition and the promotion of the necessity of health and sportmanship.
The most important event of the G.A.A. this year was the revising of the constitution. The point
system for earning the emblem and letter was changed so as to give more girls a chance to earn these
awards. The new constitution was drawn up and approved by the council at a special meeting held in
December.
Informal Initiation was held in April at which time the pledged members were initiated into the
G.A.A. Earlier in the year the council elected Edna MacNamara from the group as freshman repre-
sentative on the council. The Formal initiation and Banquet was held in May. At this Banquet, next
year's president was announced.
