And Sound I J 4 MORE THAN JUST A TEACHER: A As a tribute to a hardworking teacher, the Class of 1972 dedicates their yearbook to Mr. Jess John- son. Mr. Johnson, advisor to the Senior High Stu- dent Council, has done much in the way of starting and continuing proiects to benefit the school such as a new football scoreboard and the continuance of the Senior Lounge. As a Driver Education and American Cultures teacher, Mr. Johnson conducts his classes by telling the students truths rather than falsehoods, because he realizes that students are people and not pup- pets. Knowing that character traits are developed at home first and then elsewhere, Mr. Johnson tries to emphasize the disciplines of society and driving in class as well as out of class. Mr. Johnson, in the opinion of the Senior class, has shown the leader- ship and guidance that makes a successful teacher - and a good friend. Friend i X "iw IM: N 'S ,, ,,,is-W. Pres., Howard Gingrich, Treas. ROW 2: Alvin Coleman, Elva Worcester, Richard Harris, Charles Miller, Karl Caldwell, Richard Gingrich, Adam Brandt. The School Board has provided the students of A.C.H.S. with School Facilities and a well-rounded educational and recreational program. In the past few years the curriculum has undergone many changes to provide more and better educational opportunities for the students. Right: Mr. Richard Gingrich, our supervising principal, co-ordinates the ac- tivities of the entire school district in carrying out the policies of the School Board. X f Q. A Bel-ter School Environment 'lu .. . -arisen... i ff- 'lf Left: ln his fifth year as a member of the administration Mr. Coleman has contributed much of his time and many of his ideas toward improv- ing the school. Helping to supervise our school, Mr. Gingrich and Mr. Coleman are continually and effectively striving toward their goal of providing an adequate education for Ann- ,,,-f'T""" ville-CeIona's ever expanding student body. 46" Mrs. Martin Mrs. Maulfair Mrs. Shay Mn- 5f'0"lCk 'VI Q' if . 'sw Few of the various duties and responsibilities of the administrative secretaries are known to the students of our school. These duties consist of ordering the various supplies needed by stu- dents and faculty, calculating payrolls, keeping account of the financial status of the school, as- sisting in the preparation of the school's budget, and preparing innumerable reports for the state and federal government. The fulfillment of these duties and responsibilities is essential for the functioning of the school. Left: Mrs. Martin and Mrs. Maulfair, prepare business letters for school correspondence. 43 The administrative responsibilities of our school are held by our principal, Mr. Magill. He is in charge of many of the activities car- ried on in the school. He enforces school poli- cy and acts as a mediator between the school board and the student body. One of the more demanding iobs that he must deal with involves the scheduling of the students' curric- ula. His consent is needed in order that clubs may carry out special activities, one of which is the scheduling of pictures to be taken for the yearbook. During the year he has en- deavored to achieve a greater degree of co- operation between students, faculty, and ad- ministration. In his first year as assistant princi- pal Mr. Hook performed various duties such as supervising teachers and appointing substitutes for ob- sent teachers. As athletic director Mr. Hook scheduled both the dates and places of sports activities and organized the annual sports ban- quet, which was held to honor the senior athletes. Being the adminis- trator of disciplinary measures, Mr. Hook supervised detention hall and administered punishment when needed. Many other school func- tions and activities were also regu- lated by him. Main Office ls l W g, Nucleus Of School Q Mrs. Markey Mrs. Moyer The main office activities are conducted with the competent aid of its secretaries, Mrs. Doris Markey and Mrs. Nancy Meyer. They are often found typing forms, answering phones, and assisting students and teachers seeking information. They have the dubious pleasure of typing student's report cards every six weeks and preparing the attend- ance reports which are distributed to the fac- ulty each morning. Since Mrs. Markey has the iob of preparing the school's accounts she acts as the school's treasurer. Both secre- taries also issue working papers or register students for the draft. Upper Left: Mrs. Madcey answers a business call. S i Recognizing Hidden Talents Some important employees have unnoticed positions and their work is of- ten taken for granted rather than recognized. One such person is Mr. Dale, who takes care of the audio-visual aides for teachers in their classes. Keep- ing proiectors running and distributing films is often a difficult task. Miss Keene, the school nurse, supplies the band-aids and first aid services as well as keeping a record of each student's physical growth and any problems with sight or hearing. Below: Mrs. Reich helps Becky Grant organize outside reading materials, a requirement for Miss McCulloh's twelfth grade academic English sections. RUTH KEENE School Nurse .QTL Lf, if I A By working with all of the occupational edu- cation students either individually or in small groups, Mrs. Brensinger, the occupational edu- cation assistant, is a great help to Mrs. Zim- merman. Mrs. Reich, the library assistant, has become a greatly appreciated help, assisting many lost researchers in the library. Mrs. Fees, the attendance officer, has many duties includ- ing daily attendance records, truant students, and office typing. HELEN BRENSINGER Occupational Education Assistant HAYWARD DALE Audio-Visual Aides GAIL REICH RUTH FEES Library Assistant Absentee Officer 5 1 I ELVIN FAKE Senior High Guidance Counselor . RICHARD FORNEY Junior High Guidance Counselor The Guidance Department has an enormous iob to perform in school. This iob is performed well by Mr. Forney, Junior High Guidance Counselor, and Mr. Fake, Senior High Guidance Counselor. Devoting much time to solving personal, educational, and social problems, Mr. Fake and Mr. Forney try to help the entire student body. Administering tests such as mental maturity tests, Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Tests, IPSATJ, and National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Tests INMSQTQ, are also an important part of their iob. Because course selections compose the maiority of the guidance counse- lor's work, selecting courses to be taught, checking each student's course requirements, and helping schedule classes are demanding iobs. Mr. Fake is responsible for helping students prepare for higher education, and is also responsible for transcripts of high school records and recommendations sent to schools and colleges. Mr. Forney is responsible for all the work involved in publicizing, screening, testing, and selecting students for the Vocational Technical program. Both Mr. Forney and Mr. Fake have done a great deal in preparing students for iobs and institutions of higher learning. STUDENT-FACULTY ADVISORY COMMITTEE The purpose of the Student-Faculty Advisory Committee is to receive refer- rals, problems which the Student Council feels should be researched and discussed by both students and faculty, from the Student Council. Because of a request by the Senior High Student Council, the Administration and Stu- dent Council iointly organized a Student-Faculty Committee. This year the Student-Faculty Committee accomplished a change in final examinations which are now optional and at most can count one seventh of the final grade. This change opens doors to possibilities of more improvement in Ann- ville-Cleona High School, but to develop an effective educational institution takes the support of both students and faculty. Attractive centerpieces of brightly colored gourds, acorns, leaves and ears of corn created a crisp fall atmosphere, contrasting to the electrostatic sound of Saint Elmo's Fire, the performers for the occasion. The Homecoming court entered to the strains of "Pomp and Circumstance" as the moment of coronation drew near. Sally Shenk was crowned queen and Beth Biely as prin- cess. Other members of the court included Cathy Mar- shall, Becky Grant, and Lisa Steiner. One hundred fifty persons attended this memorable occasion which was sPonsored by the Senior High Student Council. This year's musical was based upon the famed fairy tale "The Princess and The Pea," the story of a princess who, because of her noble birth, was so sensitive she was unable to sleep on a bed of twenty downy mat- tresses when a single pea was placed beneath the bottom one. Accord- ing to the story as seen on stage no one in the kingdom could marry until Prince Dauntless did so. Dauntless' mother, Queen Aggravain, however, saw to it that no princess who wanted to marry Prince Dauntless could pass the required royalty test. Winnifred, the swamp princess, was Dauntless' last chance to marry. The story took many humorous turns as everyone tried to outwit the Queen and find out the nature of the royalty test before it was too late to help Winnifred pass it. The musical cast consisted of forty students from grades ten through twelve. Two iuniors, Deb Hoffman and Bob Shellenberger played the leading roles of Princess Winnifred and Prince Dauntless the Drab re- spectively. The Broadway version of the show starred Carol Burnett. The musical was directed by Mr. Donald Kline. Upper left: Princess Winnifred lDeb Hoffman, sings about the swamps of home during a moment of loneliness. Angel hair and flower ar- rangements adorned the tables, while music was provided by the New Jazz Quartet. Guests were warmly greeted by a reception line as they entered the beautifully decorated room, which was the result of careful planning by the Jun- ior class. Refreshments were provided the entire evening by Mrs. Delores Wolfe. Outscored But Not Out-fought What this year's squad lacked in numbers, it had in desire, as the team constantly showed the fiber that has made football the fine game it is. The team's efforts should show results in the com- ing years at Annville-Cleona. Seniors are, clockwise from top, Dave Watson, Dave Finkbiner, co-captain, Dennis Sattazahn, Ed Hostetter, Ed Posey, co-captain, and Sam Wells. Pa 1? Football 1971 had its usual share of heroes. Roger Staubach, Bob Greise, and Jim Plunkett all contributed their best to the game. For every man who becomes a star, however, there are countless boys who become men. Here at Annville-Cleona we are iustifiably proud of our gridiron team. The task of leading an inex- perienced team fell on the shoulders of only a few young men. Co- captains Ed Posey and Dave Finkbiner led the team by their fine example. At no time were they willing to concede. The two led a small group of seniors who recognized the challenge and moved into the battle without faltering. In the final analysis the football record did not accurately measure the quality of individual achievement on the team. Look for the strength gained, the humil- , ity imposed, and the desire instilled to become the foundation for future Dutchmen. Next year the team will be lentering the Lebanon-Lancaster League and hopefully will have a better season as the record goes. 1 fi.- Z sv- ' .si ' E22 S 'fbi-. 'rg exe-xx... Despite being the smallest school in the league, the team set high goals and did not let small numbers defeat them. The team was led by a small, loyal band of thirteen seniors. The two highest scoring seniors were Blake Caldwell with 79V4 points and Brian Wolfe with 77 points. Bob Micozzi was high scorer for the entire team as well as being high scoring iunior along with Richard Sheetz. There were also several individual honors won in meets dur- ing the season. Tom English lupper leftl iumped high iump, while Blake Caldwell lupper rightl ran the low hurdles. Sam Wells lleftl threw shotput, and Ed Posey labovel threw iavelin. These seniors were only a few of the outstanding individuals which led the team to so many fine victories. C nl?-', Cheerleaders Promote Good School Spirit Right: ROW 1: B. Donmoyer, C. Sholly. ROW 2: L. Steiner, S. Shenk and S. Shirk lco-captainsi, D. Hoffman. ROW 3: S. Unger, A. Ehrhart, D. Tice, C. Buffenmeyer. MISSING: Kay Wampler. .AI A strong squad this year composed of eight seniors and three iun- iors, the Varsity Cheerleaders, led by co-captains Sally Shenk and Sharon Shirk, cheered loud and long at A-C's football, soccer, and basketball games. They also alternated wrestling matches with the JV squad. As additional services this year, the cheerleaders also sold pro- grams at the basketball games for the A-C Booster Club, and collected money for the Vince Lombardi Fund. With eight seniors leaving the squad this year, Mrs. Ebling, both the Varsity and JV advisor, will have the added burden of replacing this year's great squad with the same kind of enthusiasm and spirit for next year. 13 as 'la , J r 3 Id' Ni X x. The concert included selections by the seventh grade lopposite page bottoml and the iunior high lopposite page topj choruses. Some of the numbers included solos by Valerie Knisley and Eric Ensminger lleftl in the chorus's favorite number, "Strangers in the Streets," and also a solo by Joe Getz. The choruses performed again in the spring concert along with the iunior high band, directed by Mr. Lemon, whose selections included "Highlights from Camelot" and excerpts from the opera "Rienzi." The musical groups prepared for their concerts by having weekly rehearsals and attending sectional band classes one day each week. At the end of the year the students were rewarded for their efforts by being shown a movie and having refreshments. The band concluded the year by per- forming at the street fair. -.., --......-..-g....g 7 Spring Dance ls One Of Junior High Student Counoil's Mang Projects Under the direction of Mr. Richard Eschenmann as advisor, the Junior High Student Council strived to further better school rela- tions and policy throughout the school year. Many of their pro- iects included holding a fund raising drive for Biafran refugees, sponsoring the Junior High Field Day, and selling candy at the Junior High basketball games. Three members of the Council, in addition, represented the Junior High student body on the Stu- dent-Faculty Advisory Committee. Another proiect of the council was to sponsor the annual semi-formal dance. This year the dance was held the first week of March, the theme being Flowers and Spring instead of being held as the Valentines' Day dance which had been held in previous years. There was dancing and refreshments served by the Senior High Student Council. The highlight of the evening was the crowning of the King and Queen and their court which were elected by the eighth and ninth graders. ROW 'li fseatedi L. Beard - Sec., S. ,jp fi - Kreamer - V.
