1 wif. ,. -num-.-Q v, lst Div. At the sound of Reveille six mornings a week, Petty Officers in lst, 2nd and 3rd Divisions climb out of their bunks and move around their compartments rousting out the heavier sleepers. It is cold and damp outside that early in the morning, and the sun doesn't seem to have the courage to climb out of Mt. Fuji's shadow, but there is work to be done. The ship is making prep- arations for getting underway. By 0700 everybody has either eaten or will go without. In the foc's1e, lst Div. begins faking down their lines and 2nd and 3rd are doing the same thing on the sponsons and fantail. Ratguards are removed from the seven lines holding the ship to the pier. On the boat deck, the Captain's Gig and Officer's Motor Boat are secured for sea. 0830 The word comes down from the bridge over the sound powered telephones. Cast off all lines. Shift Colors. Underway. Lines are hauled in fore and aft, and stowed away. The anchors are secured for sea in the foc'sle, and the ship slowly makes its way through the harbor. fContinued p 415 BMC J .J .
