Two new teachers have been added to the staff at A-J this year. The two rookies are Kathy Kelly, who took the place of
Miss Ayers in the art department, and Cindy Jones, who replaced Mrs. Blakely in the special education department.
Ms. Kelly is a 1979 graduate of S.l.U. where she received a Bachelor of Arts degree. Last year she taught art and
coached the girls' freshman basketball team at Fenton High School in Bensonville, Illinois, near Chicago. When asked
what the biggest difference is between teaching at A-J and teaching at Fenton, she replied, "There's a lack of incentive
down here. The students do the minimal to just get them by. At Fenton, the motivation level was higher, and there was
more of a desire from the students to do their best." When asked what she liked best about A-J, Ms. Kelly said that she
liked A-J because it's a small school, the people are easy to get along with, and the girls' basketball team has a lot of
talent.
Ms. Jones is a 1981 graduate of S.l.U. where she received a degree in Special Education with specializations in L.D.
and E.M.H. This is Ms. Jones' first teaching job. She presently lives in Murphysboro and drives from there to A-J each
day. When asked what she likes best about A-J, Ms. Jones replied that she likes the students best.

seniors, Steve Norton and Carl Evans, led the Wildcats onto the play-
ing field Cbj. The Wildcats made a fight for the ball Ccj, as the crowd
cheered them on. One exceptionally spirited spectator, Tamie
Michaels, captured the attention of our photographer Cdl.

One of the many activities of this year's joyous Spirit Week was Hat
Day. On this day one could see any kind of hat imaginable for the
students at A-J are very creative. Julie Agne Cab was especially creative.
Another highlight of Spirit Week was Western Day. Carla Ragan Cbb
and Renee O'Daniel CCD chose to depict the "cowgirl" side of the day
while Sally Whitehead was a colorful Indian Cdj.
Punk-Rock Day was another interesting and exciting day in this week.
Students dressed as punk-rockers, and the strange thing about this day
was that the teachers didn't notice anything different. Doug Weaver
gets the rope ready for the tug-of-war during the afternoon feb. Julie
Agne, Patty Womack, Stephanie Hase, and Marla Ragan dressed as an
especially interesting group Qfj. Even Angela Semrnelroggen, our ex-
change student from Germany, joined in the fun Cgl. Tracy Little and Ab-
by Belcher are behind those sunglasses in case you can't tell Chj. And
Debbie Brames had another new outfit for school on Punk-Rock Day Cij.

Class Competition added much excitement to Spirit Week. The egg
toss, paper airplane throw, and the dreaded tug-of-war Ca and bb got us
all out of sixth hour class ich to observe the festivities. David Allen in his
famous derby was one of the observers and participants of Spirit Week
Cdj during the Homecoming festivities planned and executed by
members of Student Council and their sponsor, Mr. David Bradley.

We're great- you'll see
. . . when you dial '83
When our number is called,
the class of '83 has always
answered with enthusiasm.
Members of our class are
outstanding in all areas of high
school life. From our con-
ference champion track team
to our A+ students: from our
serious partiers to our club and
chorus members, we do it all.
For the rest of our days at A-J,
you can rest assured that our
line will always be open!

Sophomores are getting the idea! They are
used to dialing the wrong number, but more often
they are dialing the right number. They are
catching on quick. They are finally getting a
chance to drive a car and soon they will be
getting their licenses. Their parents are worrying
about their pocket-books, especially when their
sophomore asks for money to buy a class ring.
Everyone wants the best! Sophomores are having
a fun and exciting year.

The 1981 Anna Jonesboro Community High School golf team completed
their season with 21 wins and 9 losses The season began in September it
ended with the team playing Carterville on October 6 During this time they
played each team twice except for Nashville
Conference was played October 2 at DuQuoin and the team finished in a tie
for second place. After a playoff they finished in third place. Daniel Wright is to
be congratulated for being Conference Medalist with a score of 76.
From Conference the team proceeded to District on October 8 at West
Frankfort where they finished fourth. This concluded their 1981 golf season.
The most valuable player of 1981 was Daniel Wright. The most improved
player was Daniel Wright.
Daniel Wright received very special recognition for being elected to the
Coaches Southern-Illinois All-Star team. He is the first in A-J s history to do
this. The team will miss their graduating seniors - Kerry Ray and Bryan
Crain - and they wish them success in the future.
Coach Halter predicts a strong team and an excellent season for the 1982-
1983 season.

Even though the Wildcat Track Team suffered a devastating blow early in the
season, the members banded together to continue their winning ways.
On March 31, during the first meet of the track season, Wildcat Track Coach
Fred Chamness suffered a severe heart attack early in the meet. When
notified after the meet of the seriousness of the heart attack, many tears were
shed, prayers were said, and the team decided that they would dedicate the
1982 track season to their sidelined coach.
The Wildcats held their own inthe big meets by winning the Murphysboro ln-
vitational and both junior varsity and varsity conference meets, and by placing
second in the Pinckneyville Invitational and district meets. By the conference
meet, each team member wore a crimson heart emblazoned with a TYFF,
shaped in a triangle, on his track uniform - an open dedication meaning
"This Year's for Fred."
Again this year the Wildcats sent ten members to the state track meet in
Charleston -including a shot putter, two relays, and three individual runners.
The 1982 Wildcat Track Team would like to thank the parents, fans, and
friends who supported our efforts, but would most especially like to thank
Coach Mike Rude for stepping in and keeping us in line. We also thank Coach
Fred for the dedication and determination he showed not only by supporting
us but by coaching us first from his hospital bed and then from his home. CThis
year's for you, Fred.J

was composed of seniors Dianne Spiller Donna Langston Lisa
Charles Stacey Coffman and Susan Boyd and underclassmen
Angie Tripp, Lisa Helfrich, Kelly Kohler, and Michele Burris. The
spikers stood up to the task and placed fourth out of sixteen
teams at the Carbondale Tourney. The spikers progressed half-
way through the season with an 11-2 record, but as the season
continued, the competition greatly improved and the spikers lost
four in a row. Nearing the end of the season at district play, the
spikers defeated Waltonville and DuQuoin, but were defeated in
the championship match by a scrappy Carterville team. This
made the overall record 15-10.

SOFTBALL - 1982
After an almost complete restructuring. Softball, 1982, competed successfully in our conference and at large. After a shaky
start, optimism, hard work, and diligent practice paid dividends. The team began hitting: fielding and pitching improved. By
season's end, the team had progressed far enough to be rated Sth in the region Cthis included both Class A and AA schools as
softball is still a one-class systemb. AJ also dominated the SWE all-conference selections placing three members on the first team
CDiane Hale, Stacey Coffman, and Dianne Spillerj, and one on the second CMichele Burrisj. The team brought pride to all of us in
the community in bringing about a successful season in which the team members were made aware of their potential and
discovered the fullness they have yet to reach. It is felt this team wilt leave its mark in years to come.

HBE' aj student i:uuni:il sponsors snow ball
The first SNOW BALL was the special
event of February at A-J. The dance
transpired after the last home basketball
game. Sponsored and conducted by the
Student Council, the dance was a suc-
cessful experiment for a much-needed
school event. School spirit was
exceptional.
Weeks before the dance, the student
body elected eight senior boys as SNOW
BALL King candidates. The candidates
were as follows: faq David Billingsley, Cb.J
Ted Brown, Cob Bob Harvel, Cd.J Todd
Hileman, Cg.J Tim Keller, Ch.J John
Shepard, CLD Aaron Longdon, Cj.J Doug
Weaver. Votes for the King were cast at
the dance. The lucky Tim Keller feb was
announced the 1982 SNOW BALL King
during the coronation ceremony. The
ceremony was hosted by Mistress of
Ceremonies Shelly Smith and Master of
Ceremonies John Koch CU
Entertainment included "Shakedown
Street," a traveling DJ show which played
songs requested by the guests. Among
the songs was the coronation theme,
"Magic Power," by Triumph.
