THE CASE OF THE ELUSIVE IDEA
ONCE UPON A TIME there was an Idea The trouble was It was a TUQIIIVE
DetectIves In the chemlcal Industry they are called researchers were put on IIS
traI
The Idea was wanted for good reason lt was needed to solve a problem to
help fIlI a need At the begInnIng of every step of progress In the chemrcal
Industry IS such an Idea orten an eIusIve one that requIres paInstakIng study
and VlVId ImagInatIon to uncover
Eventually thus partlcular Idea was captured Put to work wuth other Ideas t
helped solve the problem at hand
WhIIe thIs IS obvIously Slmplllylng what goes Into sound chemlcal research the
story nevertheless touches upon a basIc portIon of It The search for Ideas IS a
serIaI story whuch never ends In Dow research laboratorIes and pIIot plants
Sometlmes Ideas that are found turn out to be cases of mlstaken Identuty When
that happens and researchers lIve wIth the reaIIzatIon that It wIlI happen often
the search CONTINUES for the elusnve Ideas that are the rught ones Only one thIng
IS certaun eventually they wIlI be found
In Dow and Its Texas DIVISION thus search for new Ideas has found new vIqor
year after year The record shows thus
For Instance more than II per cent of the Texas DIvIsIons current productlon
capacuty IS geared to products It was not malong fIve years ago ApproxImately
30 per cent of the Texas DIvIsIons current capacIty IS for products that were no
made here a decade ago All of these new products are by no means revolutnonary
Some have been produced prevlously In other parts of the chemIcal Industry
But the fact remalns that all of the Texas DIVISION versIons were generated by
Ideas
There IS ample evIdence that the search for new Ideas and new products IS stIIl
growlng In 1958 for Instance a number of Texas DIvIsIon employees saw a
test tube dIsplay of more than 200 potentIaI Dow products that range many
frontIers
SOME OF THESE wIll never see the marketplace Others wIII become new products
Whatever happens to them IndIvIdually together they and the countless new
Ideas they represent are lufes blood to Dow and IIS Texas DIVISION

If the class wull please come to order we wull begun our lesson' We wull take
our lesson from our hustory book The study for tonught us the hustory of the Senuor
Class of 1959 Some of you are famuluar wuth thus hustory but there are some who
know luttle or nothung about thus wonderful class
The hustory of thus class us a relatuvely new hustory so new un fact that some of
ut us stull un the makung Well enough of thus ramblung lets all turn to the furst
chapter
As Chapter One opens we fund that ut us September 6 T947 Thus day marks
the begunnung of our search for knowledge Luttle dud anyone realuze then of the
greatness whuch was to follow
We started wuth 42 of the present day Senuors and 2 unsuspectung teachers Muss
Roos and Mrs Fuller After only 4 weeks of school another teacher Mrs Duxon
was requured to manage us through hopscotch red rover chase and dodge ball
and sometumes readung
Our two mauor productuons were The Valentune Nobody Wanted and the
May Fete un whuch some took part un the home made kutchen band Chapter One
slowly draws to a close wuth the Class of 59 funally well housebroken
After a summer of gloruous freedom and no school we found ourselves back un
the classroom to begun Chapter Two
ances one of whuch was the May Fete of that year Of course we cant leave out
one of our teachers Muss Runehart who so gracuously clupped the pages of our
text books together whenever a pucture of a snake appeared
The Thurd Chapter of our book opens when the Class of 59 us neatly settled un
the thurd grade Math becomes our fruend and we begun Iearnung how to duvude
One change occurred un that school lasted untul 3 30 But because we aduust easuly
to these thungs ut proved to be no problem Our annual May Fete ended the year
By the tume we reached our fourth year un school we felt that we surely knew
all there was to know about everythung but Muss Armstrong Mrs Van Suckle
Mrs Yates and Mrs Strucklun proved us wrong At recesses we made a mad rush
to the ocean wave for a sectuon The merry go round and swungs came to our
energetuc attentuon Our pastume also consusted of marbles beetles house and
fughtung We gave quute a performance at the annual May Fete There were May
pole Dances Flower Chours and a Kung and Queen The Kung and Queen were
the envy of all the others when they were crowned
As Chapter Fuve opens we have become umportant now because we are un the
Junuor Hugh School buuldung Thus us one of the most excutrng years of our hustory
We duscover what socual lufe us luke It dudnt take long for us to master the two step
dance We certaunly were gettung smarter because we were allowed to change

classes Thus was the year the famous newspaper was publushed The Englush
Gazette It was put out by Mrs lvy McDonalds Englush classes Our present hugh
school band students began developung theur outstandung talent un the fufth grade
ln the suxth grade we learned to cope wuth men teachers Mr Brown and Mr
Watson as well as Mrs Dozuer and Mrs Yates The luttle romances began to sprung
up here and there and the gurls and boys became a luttle more aware of theur
appearances It was here that our last rebel decuded to uoun the group and wear
shoes Our class tume consusted of learnung about aurplanes deusel engunes and
rollung chalk from one end of the room to the other for punushment Mr Brown s
undustruous class showed theur creatuve genuus by pauntung Chrustmas scenes on
the walls
The Suxth Chapter comes to an end wuth great expectatuons of Junuor Hugh and
Hugh School
On a brught sunny day un the fall of l953 the potentual graduates fuled meekly
unto the gymnasuum to partucupate un theur furst experuence of begun full fledged
lunuor hugh students Durung the furst few weeks we underwent the process of
becomung accustomed to unduvudual lockers changung classes and teachers and
sufferung through the day wuthout recess The boys started football but not to be
outdone the gurls played basketball
In May of thus year we combed our haur brushed our teeth took our sack
lunches boarded the school bus and took our fueld trup to Houston Upon arruvung
at our destunatuon we vusuted several places that tended to uncrease our educatuon
and broaden our untellectual munds Among these were the zoo the aurport the
Shamrock Hulton Hotel the San Jacunto Battleground the Houston Museum and
the Henke 8. Pulot Bakery where we stuffed our chubby luttle cheeks full of donuts
untul we thought our tummues would pop' Thus ends Chapter Seven
As Chapter Eught opens we found ourselves supreme rulers of the Junuor Hugh
buuldung Our superuoruty was unquestuoned and we developed an egotustucal
attutude whuch we eventually overcame We then settled down to counsel and
guude our suxth and seventh grade fruends as a mother hen does her baby chucks
As we open the book for Chapter Nune we fund a consuderable change un our
luves Now we were about to embark upon the threshold of hugh school career
The top three classes were surprused and astounded as we marched bold y to our
desugnated sectuon un the left sude of the audutoruum for after all we were the
largest class to sut un our cherushed audutoruum
We proved our superuor workung abuluty over the other classes by accumlatung
more money un the poluo druve than any of the rest Stull not to be outdone by the
lunuors and senuors we decuded to have our own prom Thus socual affaur took
place at Southsude and was enuoyed by everyone who attended To hughlught thus
festuve occasuon awards were guven to many of the deservung freshmen
Chapter Ten of our young luves and the second year of our hugh school career
proved to be the year we all studued so that we could play for the next two We

now ensoyed a lsttle supersorsty we lacked dursng our freshman year Dursng the
fsrst few weeks we made lsfe unbearable for our frsends who have now so gracsous
ly gsven thss banquet sn our honor
Chapter Eleven ss certasnly the most excstsng chapter of any so far We were
confronted wsth the problem of producsng the Junsor Sensor Prom whsch because
of our orsgsnalsty sngensous msnds and hard work proved to be no task The
snevstable success of Beneath the Sea wsll long be remembered as one of the
outstandsng proms ever to be gsven for Angleton Hsgh School Because of our
respect and admsratson for the Class of 58 we were volunteered to be the fsrst
class sn the hsstory of our school to decorate for the commencement exercsses
Because of the snexhaustable supply of actsng abslsty the Junsor Sensor play The
Youngest was a tremendous success As the end of the year approached rapsdly
we found ourselves preparsng for the last year by measursng for our Sensor rsngs
The begsnnsng of the end has fsnally come Chapter Twelve Although st ss the
last chapter and because st ss the last chapter a sad chapter we dsd everythsng sn
our power to make thss fsnal epssode one that wsll be long remembered
We started the year off wsth a bang as our msghty mstes tramped to fourteen
strasght vsctorses before fallsng to powerful Stamford sn the State Fsnals sn Waco
Thss alone ss the greatest award a sensor class could ever ask for
The Junsor Sensor play My Three Angels was dsfferent to say the least Be
cause of the unorthodox sets vsvsd lsghtsng arrangements unsque actors and a
loud bosstrous parrot st left the crowd rollsng sn the assle
On Aprsl the lst the student body was amazed to see thesr clsgnsfsed sensors
trsp gasly to school sn psg tasls lace and short pants After an exhaustsng day of
playsng hopscotch and red rover we marched wearsly home wondersng how we
ever survsved dursng our younger years
Exactly one month later thss tsme looksng luke suave and debonasr gypsses sn
our sun glasses hats bongo drums and bermuda shorts we took our sensor trsp
to Galveston We chartered a yacht and sasled around the ss'and Our beat band
serenaded us throughout the day As we traveled home tsred and weary st was
agreed th t the trsp was unsurpassed by any taken before
Thus we come to the last chapter of our hsstory book The story ss over the last
words have been wrstten Ours ss a unsque hsstory an unmatched hsstory as sn
dsvsdualsstsc as the class whsch made st Thss has been your hsstory Sensors Let us
always cherssh our moments of happsness of sadness our dssapposntments and
our anxsetses and even the Isttle thsngs whsch mean so much
After graduatson each wsll go hss separate way down the road of lsfe each
searchsng for hss own utopsa each for hss own ssland sn the sun Take advantage
of every opportunsty sn the future and we wsll dersve as many benefsts from the
future as valsantly and as confsdently as we have the past we wsll always be re
membered as that wonderful Class of 1959
